Former CBS News President Van Gordon Sauter says hidden left-wing bias is a growing problem in the media and is threatening “social cohesion” in the United States. In an op-ed published by The Wall Street Journal Monday, Sauter, who led CBS from 1982-83 and in 1986, slammed news outlets that maintain a veneer of objectivity and fairness while pushing reporting biased in favor of left-wing politics.Sauter began by recalling a conversation from 35 years ago when he insisted that the media at large was only tilted to the left and “could be corrected.” He goes on to say that his prediction was wrong and

The first mistake is to call them ''news'' organizations. They are propaganda organizations.
The second mistake is to think they are simply misguided. They know what they are doing.
The third mistake is to think they know what America would be like, if they were successful. They don't.

Over the weekend we had the "news" story of Pres. Trump golfing, tied with the Coronavirus. No bias or tilt to the story there.

Nice to hear but worthless at this point. The media has become the propaganda arm of the Left. There is no going back from that. What would be the purpose of admitting their bias. Almost everyone knows they are biased. Some are good with it for the same reason that the media is, Trump! There is a small group of people, like Sauter, that know the media is biased and think it isn't OK but that they can recover. The rest of us have written off the media. We knew they were "titled" but they wouldn't admit it. Now they are firmly in the Leftist pit and they aren't coming out.

It's not like CBS was a conservative bastion during Mr. Sauter's reign in the 80s.

Gosh, if only someone would’ve said something. Oh wait. We did. We all did. All conservatives. For decades. No solutions? Don’t care what you have to say.

Pretty much a blinding glimpse of the obvious. Media's liberal bias has become so pervasive that even liberals have to acknowledge it. The one good outcome is that they're losing their jobs in droves. Anyone majoring in journalism these days is wasting their time and money. Pretty soon journalism will surpass anthropology as the most worthless college degree.

Of course, we only read this in the Daily Wire. MSM theory is that if all the news is about Trump, he loses. If it's all about Biden, he loses. And press coverage will get worse as the election approaches. This weekend's NYT Op Ed accusing those of us who've been to Fort Benning or Fort Gordon of being white supremacists is just an example.

Sauter is the husband of Jerry Brown's sister Kathleen, who was CA State Treasurer defeated by Pete Wilson in the CA 1994 Govs race.

The First Amendment gives the media special rights to allow and promote open discussion but the media has abused these rights to promote an elitist agenda and prolong the life of a dying newspaper industry.
I agree that much of the fault lies with the people of America who allow this to happen. Americans have increasingly lost critical thinking skills which would reject the propaganda of the media and insist on at least a modicum of objectivity and balanced presentation of facts. I believe that many Americans want the "news" media to entertain them rather that presenting reality for their audience.
When Americans reject a biased media the media will adapt and become more objective. I am not holding my breath in expectation of this awakening and am fearful to the dire consequences of continuing the media's decline.

The msm had turned left during the Vietnam era by glorifying Jane Fonda and stigmatizing American soldiers as "baby killers". Puts a bad taste in my mouth just to type those words.

Bias in the press has been with us since revolutionary days. Many cities had opposing newspapers sometimes more than two that were balanced only by one being, what we call today, conservative and one liberal. Today, the bias is much more one sided for several reasons. One being the liberal takeover of our education system. A journalism student only gets one side of the story,is taught that their job is not to report the news but to shape it, and that if you want to succeed, you better join thepack. Another is that most people now get their news from television so even with cable, there are fewer player to control. I suspect that if fully investigated, foreign investment in our news sources would be exposed as much larger than thought. The 24 hr news cycle brought about by cable news has only made it worse.

Agree with other posters...where you been Mr. Sauter? Hidden left-wing bias?? You've gotta be kidding! Your decades-long colleague Bernie Goldberg wrote the definitive book on the subject some 20 or so years ago. You've had plenty of time to read Bias and it seems no one else at CBS or any other of the alphabets bothered to read it either.
Besides O'Reilly then at Fox who gave Bernie some air time for a while, he's been mostly persona non grata to his former 'friends'.
