The further left you go in your politics, the more in favor you are of central government control rather than the sharing of power that is enumerated in federalism. The same, by the way, holds true for the right -- the further right you go, the more in favor are you of central government control. Whether one calls it fascism or totalitarianism, right and left meet at their extremes. Both political philosophies taken to their furthest extreme advocate complete governmental control of your life, work, and movements. Historically, American presidents have occupied a mostly sensible position either slightly to the right or to the left of center during their tenures.

"Of course. there is no coherent national strategy. Trump has made it clear that virus policy should be set by the states. He instinctively understands federalism’s wisdom."
Maybe...but let's also understand that the Federal government and its "experts" greatly influence the hysteria that is the hallmark of this pandemic. From those famous "briefings" to the TRILLIONS spent (with more in the offing), it is the Federal authorities leading the way.
And we have PDT lending his bully pulpit to Fauci and Birx, flanked by all sorts of other scientists and political leaders, peddling "caution" and disparaging any notion of "re-opening" with predictions of this virus being a danger seemingly into perpetuity, setting "moving goalpost" standards for when it may be sufficiently clear to return to our normal lives.
This is the "Big Con"...the biggest con imaginable.

The "con" was and is from the media and the democrats once they realized what was going on. Just like the Chinese but I repeat myself. In reality, this became an asymmetrical war (war on many levels) which is what the Chinese like to do. In essence: we were attacked.
The president deftly figured out what was going on early on...so he hires the above's most precious and hallowed scientists-for a very good reason.Their "expertise" is above reproach and adored by the Left. The above planned to turn the pandemic into Katrina x1000-denegrate, dispute, disrupt and destroy every decision the president made. The Left politicizes everything and this was no different. It is a disgusting tactic from a group that has no competency or collection of new ideas-only schemes. So Donald "flooded the zone"...no pun intended!
And, at the same time the chinese virus IS highly contagious and those over 60 need to be protected. A+ for the president for accomplishing this and derailing the above.

Truitt's wrong about the degree of government control in the extremes of Left and Right. The Left values the collective over the individual. The Left has no use for a democratic republic with all power limited by constitutional checks and balances. The Right values individual liberty over the collective as a rule (one exception would be drafting men to defend the collective against foreign attack). The Right abhors concentrating government power in a Leader, who rules by diktat rather than by the messy business of negotiation.
The extreme Right would be an extremely limited government, such as the Articles of Confederation adopted by the colonies in the 1780's. The extreme Left would be Lenin's Russia, Mussolini's Italy, Hitler's Germany, or Mao's China.

The author skipped over the Constitutional basis for federalism as the bedrock of our political system, the 10th Amendment: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” While he focuses on the power of the states to govern beyond the Constitution's enumerated powers (e.g., limited powers) of the federal government, he skips over the "to the people" phrase at the end. Jefferson, at the time of the founding, emphasized that the states are not "subordinate" to the national government, but rather the two are "coordinate departments of one simple and integral whole. The one is the domestic, the other the foreign branch of the same government." Jefferson never envisioned progressive democrats at both the national and state levels but Hamilton was more prescient, expressing his hope that "the people.will always take care to preserve the constitutional equilibrium between the general and the state governments." He believed that "this balance between the national and state governments.forms a double security to the people. If one [government] encroaches on their rights, they will find a powerful protection in the other. Indeed, they will both be prevented from overpassing their constitutional limits by [the] certain rivalship which will ever subsist between them." He further spoke of "a trial of force" against domination under the yoke of either a foreign power or our general and state governments. People rising up to blunt any and all government erosion of their inherent freedoms is entirely Constitutional and clearly within the Framer's intent.

Viking is correct. But on the left you find only corruption. The ideology is lipstick.

I seriously disagree with a lot of the backhanded snark in this 'sorta kinda' laudatory piece.
I think Trump has always been better than his detractors and johnny-come-lately supporters (like the author) have assumed he was. I came to Trump without any preconceived notions, other than not being a big fan of ANYTHING from NYC, when he announced his candidacy. I had never seen even a single moment of his TV shows, and the brief cameo in "Home Alone" was the first time I had seen an image of him - I had to ask -"Who's that?" when it was clear that we were supposed to know.
I saw Trump with new eyes in 2016, was initially skeptical, and wondered if he really meant what he was saying about immigration. The more he spoke, the more I liked it.
Unlike the author, I had no hate to unlearn. Trump's NYC mannerisms are a bit irritating, like pretty much ALL NYC folks, but it is clear that he is very smart, and has the country's freedom and best interests at heart. And he's a good man 'when no one is watching'.

President Trump has been running around the parapets firing from guy to gun for 3+ years. IF he had the Republican party's support, instead of one subversive 'alternative' scheme after another, he could rally his forces. IF the rat party had done one thing to support this administration, instead of the worse scorched earth campaign of lies, felonies, foreign collaboration, sedition and murder, he might have been able to do a bipartisan plan that could have kept more parts of the economy at full production. IF the sobs of the media had been even a little bit even handed about all things Trump, he might have been able to rally people inside and outside the US.
As it is he is a lone target. Every second of every day he has to defend, plan and execute each battle against the deep state, rats and media. I don't think he felt he had the political capital to stand up to something that was presented to him as another Spanish Flu horror. In the end it is very likely that this was way overblown and will end up being on the order of the SARS or other Flus. Then he will be attacked for doing too much.
