The last time they politicized the
treatment for an epidemic

It was 1793. George Washington was President. Philadelphia was the U.S. capital. Dr. Benjamin Rush, a Philadelphia physician and former surgeon-general of Washington’s army, was the de facto head of the Department of Health of the new country. When a yellow-fever epidemic hit Philadelphia, President George Washington fled to Virginia. Dr. Rush stayed behind and worked hard to quarantine and treat the sick. But his treatment, according to Ron Chernow in his biography of Alexander Hamilton, probably did more harm than good

Fantastically interesting. Dr. Rush used the accepted remedies, purging and bleeding, which made the patients weaker. Hamilton, who grew up in the West Indies, found a doctor who used quinine. That worked, but Rush couldn't accept it. History sure does repeat itself, doesn't it?

Notice then, as now, Politics plays a role. Science provides an answer. Politics tries to sabotage the answer because its offered by the 'wrong' people. And Republicans are supposed to be the 'Anti-Science' Party. What utter RUBES the Democrats are!!

I recommend Chernow's biography of Hamilton, as I do his biography of U.S. Grant, rogue that he was.

Re Grant’s roguishness .. Mostly the press invented that too .The usual presidential politics virus infected the less capable officer cadre who wished for higher “orifice”( h/t the current Rush ) . The press gloomed onto that with usual lies .

Science is beginning to sound like economics. It depends on WHO (npi) looks at what and comes up with different conclusions. A hundred years ago mercury was used to cure STDs. Today you have competing medicines that help in the recovery. And again, it depends upon who is championing the medicine. Right now none of the corona viruses can be cured by a vaccine. Not the common cold, SARS or MERS. Don't expect that a vaccine will cure the Wuhan virus as well. Be like Hamilton, allow your doctor with your consent to administer the med you desire.

I'm currently reading "Pox Americana: The Great Smallpox Epidemic of 1775-82". The book covers the ravages of a smallpox epidemic, not just among the Revolutionary War troops, but across the Americas, including Mexico and Canada. I highlighted so many parts of the book dedicated to Washington's challenges in regards to the spread and prevention of smallpox, and couldn't help compare them to President Trump's dilemma and response. History does repeat itself!

Note that Hamilton's treatment also included a wine containing zinc.

This is a tale, not of two cities, but of two states, and two governors. Both states began reopening their economies last week as the worst of the Chinese flu appears to be over, except for a few isolated hotspots. Both states are reopening in a similar fashion, taking baby steps rather than a full gallop. One state is Georgia, the other is Colorado. (snip) Media reaction was anything but comparable or reasonable. The Guardian calls the decision racist with this headline, “Georgia's Covid-19 reopening pits white governor against black mayors.” CNN parrots the racist angle with this headline, “Black leaders say reopening Georgia is an attack on people of color.”

Saturday’s funniest headline was from the New York Times: “Investigate Tara Reade’s Allegations: Americans deserve to know more about a sexual assault accusation against the likely Democratic Party nominee.” (snip) President Trump, in the ultimate act of trolling, sided with Biden, telling him he should fight back: “I would just say to Joe Biden, ‘Just go out and fight it,'” Trump said in a podcast interview with Dan Bongino. “He’s going to have to make his own decision, I’m not going to be telling him what to do. Biden is going to have to go out and fight his own battles.”

Friday morning, Joe Biden sat down for an interview with Mika Brzezinski on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. Mika asked some hard-hitting questions about Tara Reade’s allegation that Biden sexually assaulted her in 1993. Biden looked unusually alert and tracked fairly well for most of the interview until he got tired and confused (at the 14-minute mark). More disturbing than that, though, were the misrepresentations and elisions that made it appear as if he were answering the questions when, in fact, he wasn’t. Most surprisingly, Biden insisted that it would be better for him if nobody could see his records before the election.

The awful truth is dawning on too many Democrats: Joe Biden is too ravaged by mental infirmities and is too compromised in his treatment of women to be able to hold together their coalition and avert disaster at the polls in November. Key to the ambush interview of Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn that set him up for prosecution and persecution on made-up charges by James Comey’s FBI was the advice given to Flynn by Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe -- relax, you won’t need a lawyer. It is an increasingly common statement, in comments sections, in social media posts and from callers on talk radio programs, “I think I had COVID-19 back in [name your month].” This is an important phenomenon for public policy. If they believed the experts, if they trusted what their governments had told them, then would people make that statement? Governments around the world saw COVID-19 start in early March and shuttered their economies, claiming it necessary to stop its spread. To ponder if one had COVID-19 before March is to doubt that narrative, and that pondering is amplified by those who tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies.

Unsealed internal FBI documents reveal that top FBI officials conspired to set up General Michael Flynn to “get him to lie, so we can prosecute him or get him fired.” The fact that these documents only turned up now is just one part of the DOJ’s and FBI’s Russia hoax, an ongoing effort to stage a coup against the Trump administration. The DOJ’s and FBI’s malicious prosecution against Flynn consisted of withholding exculpatory information (including the material discussed here), threatening without cause to prosecute Flynn’s son to force Flynn to plead guilty, and blackmailing Flynn’s attorneys into working against him.

When the postmortem is done on the media’s coverage of COVID-19 (and it will be), it will be clear that the virus was no Black Plague — it’s not even the flu on a bad year. SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19, has killed 56,749 Americans as of Tuesday. That’s not good. But it’s not as bad as the 2017-2018 flu season, when 80,000 -plus perished. And it’s a long cry from what all the experts were warning about just a few weeks ago: First, they predicted 1.7 million Americans dead; then they redid the models (this time apparently entering a few more “facts”) and said 100,000-240,000 dead.

Stacey Abrams, a former Georgia State House leader, is aggressively marketing herself as a potential vice president for Joe Biden — increasingly irritating those in the former veep’s orbit, an insider said. Meanwhile, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, one Biden’s 2020 presidential-race rivals, is rarely mentioned as a possible running mate. She has her sights set on something else — secretary of defense, say those familiar with her plans. Female former candidates have also been auditioning for the VP job — albeit more subtly than Abrams. On April 20, Minnesota Sen. Never was former Vice President Joe Biden the 2020 dream. He promised electability and familiarity, which turned out to be good enough for a plurality of Democratic voters in the early primaries. But now that every other Democratic contender has dropped out and dutifully lined up behind the presumptive nominee, that choice might be sitting less comfortably. Biden is campaigning from his basement, giving interviews in which he occasionally moves past gaffes into total incoherence, raising questions about his mental fitness.
