In the Nature–Nurture War, Nature Wins

Original Article

GettyImages-183798273.jpg Photo by amphotora / Getty Images. When psychology emerged as a science in the early 20th century, it focused on nurture, the environmental causes of behavior. Environmentalism—not the ecological kind, but rather the view that we are what we learn—dominated psychology for decades. From Freud onward, the family environment was assumed to be the key factor in determining who we are. In the 1960s geneticists began to challenge this view. Psychological traits such as mental illness clearly run in families, but there was a gradual recognition that family resemblance could be due to nature (genetics) rather than nurture (environment) alone, because children are 50 percent similar genetically to their parents.

Comments:

The left assumes that policies can transform what is termed "human nature." However, studies indicate that even the family environment generally is limited in impacting our fundamental natures.

Old news. You don't raise race horses from cart ponies and draft horses. Hunting dogs know mostly what to do by themselves. Watch a young, untrained border collie start herding anything it can. For people, not quite as definitive, but pretty often that really smart friend with the really smart wife has really smart kids, and vice versa.

FTA: "These findings call for a radical rethink about parenting, education and the events that shape our lives. It also provides a novel perspective on equal opportunity, social mobility and the structure of society. " The breakthrough in favor of nature has come from decades-long studies regarding twins and adoption. The data shows that people would be the same person even if adopted at birth and raised in a different family. The argument for the predominance of nurture was based on home life, parental involvement, financial security and educational opportunities. These influences provided by family were found to be "largely unsystematic, unstable and idiosyncratic—in a word, random." The nurture argument was tailor made for the Cultural Marxists. It is the foundation of all their policies regarding affirmative action, social mobility and the structure of society; that man can remake man. It was out of this perverted psychological premise from which "progressivism" was let loose upon America. How long it will take the psych establishment to discount and dismiss these findings, as they threaten their phony baloney jobs and dictatorial dreams? Mr. Plomin also notes, "The DNA differences inherited from our parents at the moment of conception are the consistent, lifelong source of psychological individuality, the blueprint that makes us who we are." Not a blob of cells; a full individual life present at the moment of conception and every minute thereafter. Back in 1973 Justice Blackmun said something along the lines of we were unable to look inside the womb. Today we can with sonograms and it has changed many hearts and minds regarding abortion, swelling the ranks of the pro-life movement. The Cultural Marxists see people as commodities; things that can be pushed and pulled into a different shape...through the right kind of "nurture" in the right kind of "environment". Too bad real science has finally caught up to their false premise for remaking western civilization.

California’s most vulnerable immigrants have faced unprecedented challenges this year, with some weighing whether it’s worth staying in the United States altogether. Ten months of a pandemic that has disproportionately sickened immigrants and devastated some of the industries that rely on immigrant labor, combined with years of anti-immigrant policies by the Trump administration have exacerbated insecurities for undocumented people and immigrants working low-wage jobs across California.  CORRECTION*

It was mid-August. The playgrounds of Brookline, Massachusetts, had finally reopened, and so the news spread fast. Sharon Abramowitz had resigned from the school committee. If a lab wanted to manufacture a school committee member to help the 7,800-student Brookline School District through the COVID crisis, it probably would’ve ended up with Abramowitz. The sociologist-anthropologist-epidemiologist had studied Ebola, written interagency guidelines about what community engagement should look like during a crisis, and, after the district shut down in March, spent 40 hours a week in volunteer meetings on Zoom trying to make a safe reopening feasible. But now she was moving full time to her second home in Vermont.

In the early hours of December 21, 1935, New York mayor Fiorello LaGuardia walked into the Bronx Terminal Market with a cadre of cops. As the police played a horn fanfare, he hopped onto the back of a vegetable truck and addressed the assembled farmers and peddlers. Starting December 26, New York City would institute a total ban on the sale, display, or possession of a commodity that posed a “serious and threatening emergency to the city.” This substance, at the time available in any city market, was controlled by “a monopoly of doubtful legality” (in other words, the mafia). Klaus Schwab, impresario of the World Economic Forum, released a manifesto in the run-up to 2019's annual meeting at Davos, Switzerland, in which he called for a contemporary equivalent to the postwar conferences that established the liberal international order. “After the Second World War, leaders from across the globe came together to design a new set of institutional structures to enable the post-war world to collaborate towards building a shared future,” he wrote. “The world has changed, and as a matter of urgency, we must undertake this process again.” Schwab went on to call for a new moment of collective design for globalization’s alleged fourth iteration (creatively labeled Globalization 4.0).

From one presidential election to the next, the battleground states that make — or break — the election remain largely the same. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t gradual (and sometimes, not so gradual) shifts underway. We zoomed in on how 16 battleground states have voted relative to the country as a whole since 2000 — or how much more Republican or Democratic they are relative to the nation1 — and we found an electoral map undergoing a series of changes, some steady and others abrupt.

In the spring of 1959, at a secretive meeting at a yacht club in Cairo, Venezuela’s then-minister of mines and hydrocarbons, Juan Pablo Pérez Alfonso, hatched a plan to give big oil-producing countries more control over their black gold — and a greater share of the wealth it promised to create. A year later, his scheme would be formally christened the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, or OPEC. Venezuela, which sits atop what are arguably the biggest petroleum reserves in the world, was the only non-Middle Eastern country to be included — a testament to its importance to the global oil business.

Lessons in the Decline of Democracy From the Ruined Roman Republic 8 replies

The U.S. Constitution owes a huge debt to ancient Rome. The Founding Fathers were well-versed in Greek and Roman History. Leaders like Thomas Jefferson and James Madison read the historian Polybius, who laid out one of the clearest descriptions of the Roman Republic’s constitution, where representatives of various factions and social classes checked the power of the elites and the power of the mob. It’s not surprising that in the United States’ nascent years, comparisons to ancient Rome were common. And to this day, Rome, whose 482-year-long Republic, bookended by several hundred years of monarchy and 1,500 years of imperial rule, is still the longest the world has seen.

I’m probably second to none in my dislike for Meghan Markle. There’s something unattractive about a mature woman marrying into the British Royal family with one of the world’s most expensive weddings, hanging out with the Queen, living in insane luxury…and then whining non-stop about the horror of her life. There’s something even less appealing when that woman accuses the Royal family of race hatred. After weeks of hype, CBS finally televised Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah.
