The Treasury Department now says that Americans on Social Security will not be required to file a "simple tax return" to receive a stimulus check from the U.S. government. The announcement reversed an earlier statement from the Internal Revenue Service that participants in the federal retirement program would need to file such a return to get the funds. The IRS directive would have impacted about 15 million people, including millions of seniors on Social Security, who aren't required to file tax returns, according to Chuck Marr, senior director of federal tax policy for the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. What if someone has two different accounts for tax refund and SS deposit. Where will the funds go?

A lot of confusion around this. A good example of how poorly this law was written.
And I have to ask; Will illegal aliens that use an ITIN instead of a SSN ( because they can’t get one ) also get their $1200 check ?

I was going to buy a rifle with my stimulus check, and after some consideration, I will be writing two checks spaced about 3 months apart to the Trump Presidential campaign to use that money for a better purpose than a new rifle for me.

If you are on SSI already, aren’t you already being taken care of and getting the assistance you are entitled to?

#4, why should we have to send checks to people that didn't think about having some savings for times like this? Oh, that's right, they had to have the latest smartphone, $200 sneakers, and $60,000 suvs.

Agree #5, that aspect especially angers my wife. She knows how hard we scrimpted and saved to get our first "three months of take home pay" into the bank as a separate savings account when we were first married, right out of college. And then, when we upped the goal to $10,000 in a special, "never use" rany day account, which we once used for an unexpected medical event, and then had to scrimp and save again to put it back.
People who will not save are the grasshoppers, and those of us who are the thrifty ants, really do object to this BS.

4 and 5, I'd like to see you live on my SS check. It doesn't even cover the rent. Not all of us live where there are high paying jobs, where you can collect the maximum. When I took a job that wasn't under SS, I had to provide for my retirement on my own. If you think SS will provide for you, you are just plain ignorant of what you will get. The government is not paying for my SS. I, along with my employer at the time, paid into it and am receiving some of it back. My own money!
As for $200 dollar sneakers and the latest cell phones, I live in a senior community and have yet to see anyone with either one of those. $60,000 SUVs? Not a one among over a thousand retirees here. You must be liberals to be so sadly misinformed.

There are many people that cannot file a 'SIMPLE' income tax return. As an example, investors who receive K-1 end of year documents have to wait until they arrive, and often it is NOT by April 15. I always require an extension.

Come on people. There are individuals that worked long and hard and do have some means other than SS for income. The SSAN deduction on my salary was very high. Go after the ones that get that benefit and did little or nothing to receive SS monies. Kindly do not lump us all together. If anything, target those non-qualifiers on the gov't teat.

Ever heard the old saying 'god laughed while I made plans?' Well that's me. I worked for 30 years and had my future planned. What I didn't plan for was a bad fall that basically ruined my right arm and shoulder. It was three years before I had any control of it and still, to this day, almost 18 years later, I don't have it back 100%. The place I worked was changing the retirement set up at that time and I fell through the cracks. I got a one time pay out and that was it. So I've lived on SS since then. I have managed just fine because both my boys offered me a home. I lived with one for 11 years and now live with the other, going on 5 years. This allows me to make ends meet and sometimes have a bit left over. Certainly not my plans to work, retire early, work part time after that and travel. Life happens to people that you can't plan for.

#4 & 5 That's really harsh. Not everyone is poorly educated, an illegal with anchor babies or welfare queens. If someone went on SS early, they are severley punished. If they had a medical problem, every dime saved will be wiped out, especially if they are single. Many elderly and disabled in this country earn under $1000 a month from SS and live in poverty while Washington falls all over illegals. If you are healthy and successful, I am happy for you. Someone I know has no job, no SS, widowed and no hope.

I'm retired and on Social Security. My wife is still working full time and just filed and because we are 66 she will get her full benefit while also working. We don't need any additional help. I would hope we don't see a check! If we get one, will probably donate it to someone who needs the cash more than us. Nothing self sacrificing about it...we are a free people and we should act like it!!!

I'm strictly on SS with a small amount in a 401k. I live month to month. I don't wear 200 shoes. I drive a car my daughter and son in law gave me. I'll be donating my check to someone who had the 3 month salary set aside, had the 10k "no touch" account, and life savings and never in his worst nightmare dreamed he would be in this shape. Judge not lest you be judged.
