Only simpletons define a bear market as anything greater than a 20% loss. There is NOTHING magical about 20%. The rally of the last three days is NOT conclusive of anything yet. We need to see about another 5% or so before one can entertain the thought that this was just news-driven panic and that a bottom has been put in.

Sitting in their homes without any of the thousand signs of normal life to even lift their spirits--their kids out of school, and no friends to play with, no ball games on television, no trips to the mall or even the park, no neighbor's barbecue wafting the pleasant smell grilling steak to signal the approach of spring--millions of Americans sit without a paycheck, worried that even a trip to the market could imperil their heath. The market may go up and down, but until people return to work, and their kids return to school, and there is children's laughter on the sidewalk again, this economic recession will soon sour into a mass mental depression. Please, Mr. President, do not allow fear to define our people's character in times of threat. We have survived worse epidemics without shutting down, including the Spanish Flu that killed 700,000 Americans in 1917. Put America Back to Work. Do it soon.

This is a lesson to learn about investing and long term returns. A 35% loss on a big balance doesn't get reduced much by a 20% gain in the reduced balance. When banks and institutions show charts showing returns after 10 years at 5% from an IRA investment, those charts do not reflect that in some years returns are negative, some positive, not a straight line upwards, so your returns will be different.

I bet you all those senators that sold high when they had insider information, bought back in when it hit bottom. Now they are riding it back up. It must be nice. Something I have never known in my life.

If you think the American media is too neutral toward Donald Trump? You might be playing tetherball around the pole of the leftist extreme. Take, for example, Mehdi Hasan, a columnist for The Intercept website and a "presenter" for al-Jazeera English. He was celebrated on Friday by the socialist British newspaper The Guardian for lamenting the alleged pro-Trump press. Nesrine Malik began this puff piece with the pure stuff: We all know that the president is a pathological liar,” Mehdi Hasan says from his office in Washington DC.

It shows, for one thing, how far COVID-19 has to go before it equals the average seasonal flu mortality, worldwide. If I had to predict, I would guess that it will eventually reach the average level. Will it get to 2x the average number of flu deaths, worldwide? Looking at current trends, I don’t see how that will happen. But time will tell. Likewise in the U.S. You still can’t see the bar for COVID-19,
