The cruise ship industry is reeling. The outbreak of the new coronavirus has made the basic fundamentals of the business medically inadvisable to the point that the State Department has issued a warning to U.S. travelers—chief among them the elderly—to stop taking cruise ships until the threat has passed.
And yet, even as thousands of people have found themselves stuck on ocean liners, in close confines with others suffering from a deadly virus, not everyone is ready to bag their cruise ship getaway. Indeed, while some shudder at the prospect of enduring severe flu-like symptoms and a 14-day quarantine,
You can probably get a good deal these days.

Who do you suppose is paying for all the testing and quarantining and other medical-related expenses? The taxpayers should not be obligated by their taxes for the unwise decisions of people. Too many questions are unanswered about the virus at this point.
But even in "normal" times, those ships are like germ incubators.

No way am I cancelling my June cruise. Given the annual flu, why have cruises at all? By the same logic, should I stop driving?

We are booked on a 2 week cruise sailing out of London and I'm not going to cancel unless we are forced to. I'm not willing to buy the hype of the coronavirus. I think it's all BS.

Had booked a Inside passage cruse last year for May - we have the option of re-booking up to the end of the March - debating...
Just informed that the Increasingly misnamed National Association of Broadcasters convention (100k +/- people) in Lost Wages in Mid April has been canceled/postponed - considering you have pony up $'s to reserve the space a year in advance and square footage on the floor is not cheap - it's going to interesting to see how this resolves.

Booked on a two weeker to Hawaii at the end of April. Will wait to see how this plays out by 3/31. Norovirus is a constant issue, according to the media. Cruising is, for us, the ultimate vacation. Not so quick to cancel. Not giving into the hype and the Democrats trying to collar PDT with it.
MAGA!!! KAG!!! Aloha! Can’t wait for November!

I just returned from a 30 day cruise, which left just as the very first cases were discovered. Passengers who had recently visited China, Japan or S Korea were denied boarding at the last minute. I cannot emphasize enough how the cruise line was mobilized like I've never seen before to fight against any infectious disease. Even the cabin stewards were continually wiping down metal surfaces with disinfectant. New handwashing stations were installed at every restaurant, including the buffet and you were not allowed to pick up a plate or be seated unless you first washed your hands for 20+ seconds.
Most people on cruisecritic had packed wipes, gloves and masks. In larger venues, people would move away immediately from anyone coughing.
To me, it was like an exercise in defensive driving---only this time it was defensive eating. It's not ME I was worried about, it was ignorant or defiant OTHERS.
I had a fabulous time but have to admit that if my cruise had been scheduled this month I probably would think twice and consider rebooking. The cruise lines can only do so much.

On a cruise awhile back I called a guy out who was leaving the restroom without washing his hands. His reply: "Mind your own damn business"...That's how cruise ships get sick.

One cruise line I know of is thanking people for NOT cancelling trips and offering great bonuses in the bargain. Good move. That is, unless the crew is staffed by Chinese nationals.

I have been working very hard, so someone asked why I don't take a cruise and relax. My response: Why don't I go home and sit on my couch and relax?

And how many deaths on cruise ships? Who is most likely to die of coronavirus? Elderly. So I am avoiding meetings with elderly people...NOT! But ina rational world, that is what we should do. We will never quarintine the elderly just like we didn't quarintint those with HIV (then called HTLV-III virus) virus back in the 80s and accelerated the deaths.

If the elderly are more at risk we should avoid them. Oh, wait! I'm elderly and live in a senior park! Forget what I said!
