In 2016, the Arizona Republic and Dallas Morning News attracted attention by breaking ranks from conservatives and endorsing Hillary, a Democrat. Voters in their states overwhelmingly ignored the advice, and went for Donald John Trump.
Now both newspapers have announced they will no longer make political endorsements.
The Republic said today, "Readers have made it clear: You want to be informed about elections but not told how to vote. We hear you.”(Snip)Hmm. Focus groups. The Republic is bleeding readers and I suspect one reason is turning its back on conservatism. By endorsing Hillary, the newspaper was willing to flip the Supreme Court to the ACLU liberalism of Ruth Bader Ginsberg.
On the rare occasions that I haven't reached a conclusion about a certain issue I find these endorsements to be useful.
If my local rag is for something, then I know to vote against it. And visa versa.

Wondering if the Arizona Daily Star (Tucson) will skip an endorsement. They are bleeding subscribers. They are an almost totally Democrat paper that is now published in Phoenix. That means anything that takes place after 6-7 pm will not be in the next morning paper. They do refer you to their website to read about it. Almost all the editorials and columnists are liberals and about 95% of letters to the editor come from liberals. The last renewal cost for the year was $707. I think the paper may be smaller than my 1960's small hometown (10,000 residents) newspaper. Many of my neighbors have cancelled or not renewed their subscriptions.

Our local newspaper, and I suppose most others, have no real reporters digging up the facts. They take their news stories from the wire services and their parent organizations, located in the media hives. You read the same stories seen in every other newspaper, as well as on the alphabet networks.
Our local paper can't even cover most local stories, unless it is fed to them by special interests.

I guess many newspapers, seeing declining subscriber bases -- primarily because old dogs like me are finally giving up the paper - decided that making endorsements that tick off that dwindling base doesn't make sense.
After 50 years of religiously reading one or more papers everyday, I finally pulled the plug. Our small town paper went from 5 days a week to 2, so I still get it. But the big city local paper, getting smaller and smaller each day -- well, I went from 7 days to 3 days a year or two back. When they sent me a notice that the price was going up to $9 a week for three newspapers (Fri, Sat, Sun.), I said goodbye. I can always go to the store on Sunday and buy a paper for $3 or $4 if I want.

It was a good day over 12 years ago I dropped my subscription to the Dallas Morning News. I decided it was a worthless liberal rag anyway and didn't want to be a part of their subscriber base.

Stopped our subscription the the Minneapolis Red Star and Tribune 15 years ago. Picked up a copy at the Doctor's office to scan. Haven't missed a thing in 15 years! Money and wasted time saved.

I look at this as non-endorsement endorsement of Trump. They cannot bring themselves to endorse him, not after the three years of slamming and ignoring his accomplishments. So rather than admit they have been wrong all this time, they are going to go this route. They might be dumb morons, but they are not stupid.

The Arizona Repulsive, also known as "People's Republic" is one of the scummiest newspapers on the planet. They were a great conservative newspaper as recently as 1980. They regularly interviewed Ed Buck (Schiff's pal) in the late eighties as he crusaded to run Evan Mecham out of office. They got him. Nobody still knows what Mecham or Fife Symington did, other than defy the McCain establishment. Let that ghastly paper die.

I also cancelled daily delivery of my local paper. I have kept (so far) the Sunday edition just in case there is something of a local nature that I may need to know. I'm keeping the paper at least until after the election since I think I'll really enjoy watching their heads explode-----again.
I sincerely hope my paper doesn't cease endorsements. I'm looking forward to seeing how they explain their reasons for choosing the dem; no matter who it will be. I'm sure they'll be creative!!
