Pete Rose posted monster numbers in his Major League Baseball career. Rose, who played from 1963 to 1986, holds major league records for games played (3,562), at bats (14,053), hits (4,256), and singles (3,215). He had a lifetime batting average of .303. Those are Hall of Fame numbers. But the player known as “Mr. Hustle” has never been inducted into Cooperstown because of a scandal that marred his post-player career. In 1989, three years after his retirement, Rose was kicked out of baseball amid accusations that he bet on baseball games while playing for and managing the Cincinnati Reds.

Go back ten years...somebody tells you that PRESIDENT Donald Trump would be recommending that Pete Rose be admitted into the baseball hall of fame. I really don't have an opinion about Pete Rose, but I'm kind of giddy that we have a President Trump and he's giving us his opinion, flat out.

Considering what a lot of pro athletes have done since Pete's day, especially NFLers, what he did is pretty mild, and if he didn't bet against his team he harmed no one. Considering his expertise he may have had an edge up on some other baseball bettors but that's their problem.

FTA - "No hard evidence ever emerged that he bet against his own team...". Induct Pete Rose into the Hall of Fame.

Pete has thirty years of punishment. Trump is absolutely right. His Career and his numbers are, by far, the best in the majors. His actions Never affected the outcome of any game. Put Him in. Stop playing politics with this guy.

Commissioner Landis banned Shoeless Joe Jackson on his own say-so after a jury failed to convict the Black Sox conspirators. During the 1919 World Series Jackson, a career 0.356 lifetime hitter, had 12 hits, a world series record that stood for 45 years, while hitting 0.375 and committing zero errors. Not the numbers one would put up to throw the series to the Cincinnati Reds. Put Joe and Pete in the Hall.

I'm with #1 on this. Can't agree to Rose in the Hall. There is a sign in every clubhouse at every level of professional baseball explaining that if you gamble, you are banned for life, ineligible. Rose knew it and did it anyway. Period, dot, end of sentence.
And some apologists are trying to say that is was okay since he ALWAYS bet on his team to win every single game. That is a giant load of dung. Do it once, do it 1000 times, for your team, against your team, you are WRONG. I'd be willing to bet (Ha!) that he did not bet his team to win on many occasions, having plenty of inside info on injuries plus the ability to manipulate the roster. The minute he didn't bet to win, the bookies immediately knew something was up.
Granted, anyone who gambles is taking a risk of losing to some rigged game. Caveat bettor!!

Ohio voters love Johnny Hustle almost as much as they love Woody Hayes . Smart move on Trump’s part.

Giamatti swore Rose would never get there. His hatred for Charlie Hustle has gone on for too long. Put Rose where he belongs.

I agree with Trump on this. Banned from baseball shouldn’t mean banned from the HOF. Rose has HOF numbers. He should be admitted.

Rose needs to be admitted into the HOF based on his career accomplishments. If gambling affects the integrity of the game, well I got news for you - so do performance enhancing drugs, which we all know that they do. Banning gambling players from the HOF and not also banning those who use drugs renders the rule downright arbitrary and unethical. And those who support keeping Rose out of the HOF should take a long hard look at their faulty reasoning processes.

I'm for letting both Pete and Joe in. Their numbers rate it. And if not, then ban the whole Astros team from any chance in the HOF. Also those steroid users like Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa, he with the corked bat. There is a host of others that should be banned along with Rose for various reasons.

Rose lied and lied and lied; never admitted to anything until they cold prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt. I still don't believed he's been completely honest. As far as not affecting the outcome of any games, BS. If he had a big bet on tomorrow's game, you don't think he might decide not to use his closer today so he'll have him for tomorrow? Or other lineup decisions?
He knew what the penalty was. It's posted in every clubhouse, and they go over it every spring training. He knew, and he did it anyway. Let him in and you're telling every young player "we don't really mean all that stuff, if you're a big enough star."

I think Rose should be admitted and I've thought this for a long time. I know there are a lot of issues, but when all is said and done, I'd vote to admit him now.

First off, Pete's "banishment" is a settlement agreement he entered into with MLB. He agreed to the punishment without there ever being a hearing, apparently preferring things that way. He can always back out of the agreement and MLB can air all that evidence #4 refers to. So, Pete, your move...
As far as Shoeless Joe, his '19 World Series performance is an interesting thing to dissect. Go check out his hitting prowess when the Black Sox were known to be dumping games...a few 0 - fers, and very few RBIs. Make of it what you will.
Pete got what he bargained for; Shoeless Joe got what he deserved. Pete can back out of his bargain any time...why doesn't he?

I remember that Johnny Bench warned Rose to "keep your cronies out of the clubhouse". And I remember hearing Bench quit his announcing gig with the Reds when Marty Bennaman opined that Rose should be in the Hall. I will stick with Johnny Bench. No Rose for the Hall. As a matter of fact many who are there should not be. Mike Mussina? Trump should pardon Flynn, Manafort and Stone first.

So it's okay for Major League Baseball to take money from the Indian Casinos. I thought Major League baseball was against gambling. Sounds hypocritical to me.

So no member of the HOF has ever lied, hung out with questionable people, had a gambling or drinking problem, or cheated on his wife—right? Is there a morality test for HOF? The voters of course can take these things into account so why not let them in Rose’s case?

Let's be fair and split the Baseball HOF into "Players" and 'Coaches" then induct Pete into the Players', but not the Coaches'.
