Across the United States, from cities to rural counties, police departments are confronting a recruitment crisis. “Going back to 2010, we had about 4,700 online applications. That dropped down to about 1,900 last year,” said Steve Anderson, chief of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, in a Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) report last year. Seattle’s police department reported a 40 percent to 50 percent drop in applications, while Jefferson County, Colorado’s applications plummeted 70 percent. In total, 86 percent of police chiefs nationwide reported a shortage of sworn officers, with nearly half stating that the shortage had worsened over the past five years.

Well, who'd a thunk it? When you disparage, mock, belittle, and draw targets on the backs of police officers, why WOULDN'T someone want to join up for the fun?

The reasons for this crisis are very complex.
But every complex element of it that I can think of has its roots in the democrat political cabal.

I can't imagine what it must be like to arrest someone, possibly a violent arrest, provide a mountain of red handed evidence, then have to confront the same individual again day after day. The criminals are laughing while getting arrested knowing that within hours they'll be back doing the same crime, same street.

I'm sure it's a great morale booster to arrest someone for robbery and see them back on the streets the same day because of no-bail policies.

Further @ #2- It does have its roots in the Democratic party but it was fertilized, watered and watched over by Barack Ubangi.

It's more difficult to find anyone to do anything who can pass a simple drug test. The end result of a hollywood culture and pandering rats who fed a collapsing culture.

My husband and I are both retired law enforcement. We saw the handwriting on the wall years ago. Law enforcement was the one career we prohibited our sons from applying for.
The benefit of the doubt now goes to the criminal. No thanks!

When you attack the police, the second amendment all of a sudden becomes the necessary replacement, doesn't it?

I have an idea. How about when the thugs are released the same day, they are driven to the fancy neighborhoods where all these whiny democrats live. Or where the judges live. Or where the Kennedy's or Romney or even better, AOC and friends live.

The mind of man thinks up the solutions in its science fiction. Capt Kirk showed us the flip phone of the future, for example. RoboCop will become a reality.

Right is left, up is down, police are less trustworthy than criminals. It sounds like biblical end times, and it sure makes it seem like there's nothing good about being (or wanting to become) a cop. Was there ever a time when the mainstream media portrayed police in a good light or gave them the benefit of the doubt?

We're seeing the same lack of applicants in the government school system. Same reason: total breakdown of institutional discipline. Teachers are assaulted, taunted, and disrespected in the classroom and there are zero consequences for the offenders.

I did police recruitment for some years. Most departments do little more than put out a help wanted sign. Note the article: Not as many recruits coming from police families and the military. Families are smaller; the kids better educated. Veterans get priority consideration for many employers, private and public. Departments often haven't adjusted well to these changes.
Minimum standards also block hiring. Tattoos are often more than just decorative etchings, denoting gang affiliations or "extreme views". Past drug usage is a huge problem; and many use to the day they are first tested and beyond. Past felony convictions. Lying on applications and in polygraph reviews. Mental health is another huge issue, given that these applicants will be toting guns and exercising authority. Physical fitness... I could go on. "Streamlining the hiring process" is code for fewer background checks and lower standards.
And don't look to pay and benefits as the issues, either. Especially in urban areas, where there are several competing jurisdictions represented by strong unions, officers are well compensated.

Owebama started the anti-cop snowball rolling downhill. It's never stopped..It's picked up every disaffected leftist and resentful BLM-lover on its descent. No wonder people are wary of becoming a sworn LEO.

call it the ferguson effect, compounded by the Tamir Rice incident. In both cases, the police officer properly shot the kid.
And the police officers were treated badly.

I can't believe the nation isn't outraged by states with no bail laws. Nothing seems to shock people these days. How long before murder is legalized??

Spit on cops, and let criminals run free.....gee, I can't understand why fewer would want to do that job.
/s off
Reap what you sow.
Be armed, be safe. Wait for a cop.....might be a long wait in some places.

I totally support the police...as police! But today’s cops are being taught that they are some sort of military swat asset! Even here in little Mound, MN they drive all black (I mean everything black) menacing cars! How about the old black and white that says “To Protect and Serve” on EVERY car! Who the hell are you trying to fool? Nobody, you just want to cool and nasty! THIS I will never support! You work for us and this ain’t Russia yet! Start acting with a meek servant mentality and you will be loved again by the public!

@20 Your post reminds me of the shock when I saw how armed up the police were during the Boston bombing.
