Life expectancy in the United States increased in 2018 for the first time in four years, driven largely by a drop in cancer-related deaths and a historic decline in fatal overdoses. New CDC data released Thursday provides hope that the major contributors to three years of stagnant or declining life expectancy may be relenting. Still, other factors such as suicide ticked up in the past year. The data confirms fatal drug overdoses dropped in 2018 for the first time in nearly 30 years — a bright spot for President Donald Trump, who has made the opioid crisis a key issue of his presidency. The decrease could indicate

Lay off the dope, including abusing prescriptions, and stay out of places you don't belong, minimizing death from lead poisoning, and you'll probably live a long life.

No, questions about Adam Schiff's dealings

Questions about House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff’s dealings with the anonymous Ukraine whistleblower are not “disgraceful,” as Schiff tried to claim on Thursday, nor are they baseless. These questions are relevant and necessary insofar as they inform the impeachment of President Trump, why this impeachment was launched, and how it came about. During Thursday’s question period in the impeachment trial, Schiff was asked why the House Intelligence Committee hired two Obama-era National Security Council aides, Abigail Grace and Sean Misko, who had worked with the alleged whistleblower, and what role Grace and Misko had played in the House’s impeachment investigation. Instead of addressing this potential conflict of interest,

Reboots are all the rage in Hollywood these days, and also in politics it seems. There’s something familiar about a Democratic nomination contest featuring a former Vice President trying to fend off a challenge from a far left Senator who enjoys the enthusiastic backing of the frenzied left for the privilege of facing off against a Republican incumbent that Democrats loathe with the intensity of a thousand white hot suns. Oh yeah—that was 1972, when the George McGovern insurgency ended Hubert Humphrey’s presidential ambitions. There are some lessons to be learned from that long ago contest, including how the party establishment was unable to stop McGovern, partly

As the final sliver of daylight faded over the Capitol dome last night, it was clear that Democrats’ long, frustrated quest for a deus to save them from Donald Trump would produce no machina after all. Instead, there was only Representative Adam Schiff, the party’s tireless point man in the impeachment trial, who stood in the well of the Senate making an 11th-hour argument that Trump’s political-dirt-for-military-aid squeeze on Ukraine was too egregious to ignore. “If you accept the argument that the president of the United States can tell you to pound sand when you try to investigate his wrongdoing, there will be no force

Rep. Adam Schiff said that if Barack Obama encouraged a foreign power to investigate a political opponent, then the last president would have committed an impeachable offense. “Under no circumstances do you go outside of your own legitimate law enforcement process to ask a foreign power to investigate your rival, whether you think there’s cause or you don’t think there’s cause,” Schiff explained during the impeachment trial. “And you certainly don’t invite that foreign power to try to influence an election to your benefit.” Schiff strangely spoke as though addressing a hypothetical. Not only did the Obama administration link arms with foreigners to take down a political rival,

Next November, when most voters are trying to forget the partisan antics of President Trump’s impeachment, they will decide his fate based on the same criteria they always use to determine if a president deserves reelection. Committed Republicans will vote for Trump, of course, and committed Democrats will vote against him. But party loyalists are about evenly split among only 54 percent of the electorate. Fully 45 percent of Americans now identify as Independents, and their votes will hinge on more pragmatic concerns. This is good news for the president. A new Gallup survey shows very significant increases in public satisfaction on eight key issues since Trump took office:

It takes serious account of the efforts Israel has made, beginning in the early 1990s, to do what Bill Clinton once called “taking risks for peace.” It recognizes the rueful lessons those efforts have taught us and builds on them. U.S. authorities discovered the longest smuggling tunnel ever found along the southwest border. The tunnel originates in Tijuana, Mexico, near the Otay Mesa Port of Entry and extends a total of 4,309 feet long -- more than three-quarters of a mile. The next longest tunnel in the U.S., discovered in San Diego in 2014, was 2,966 feet long. "While subterranean tunnels are not a new occurrence along the California-Mexico border, the sophistication and length of this particular tunnel demonstrates the time-consuming efforts transnational criminal organizations will undertake to facilitate cross-border smuggling,” Cardell Morant, acting special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) San Diego, said in a press release.

Two Republicans joined 47 Democrats to vote in favor of calling for the additional evidence. The motion fell short by two votes, ending the case House Impeachment managers have been presenting for the past two weeks. The Senate now moves into the final phase of the trial, which could last a few days longer to allow senators to deliberate and give speeches before holding final votes.
