More than 30% of inmates in Canadian prisons are Indigenous—even though aboriginal people make up just 5% of the country’s population, according to new figures released by a federal watchdog. In a scathing report published on Tuesday, the correctional investigator of Canada, Dr Ivan Zinger, described Indigenous overrepresentation in the country’s jails and prisons as “nothing short of a national travesty”. The figure is highest in the prairie provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, where Indigenous people make up 54% of the prison population.(Snip) Indigenous inmates also serve more of their sentence before being granted parole–and reoffend at much higher levels than non-indigenous inmates.

As long as the powers-that-be are demanding 'equal representation', I would wager that there are a great many more MEN in prison than WOMEN.
I DEMAND EQUALITY!
JAIL MORE WOMEN OR RELEASE THE MEN!

This is a similar travesty to the fact the black males comprise barley 6% of the US population but commit almost 60% of all homicides.

Maybe Harry and Meghan will stick their noses into this situation and get some Indigenous Canadians murderers out of prison. As it seems like such do-gooderism would be right up their alley, after all they don’t have to worry, as they have a joint heavily armed British-Canadian security force to protect their backsides 24/7.

Put people who break the law in prison and stop the horse crap about what color they are.
I would bet that Dr. Zinger does not live in a neighborhood where indigenous people are.

Unsurprising, frankly. Do the crime, do the time. Different cultures have histories of different "accepted" behavior. Unfortunately, black and latino cultures have much more violent behaviors as their "norms", and therefore these minority groups contribute many times the number of violent crimes in the USA than is proportional to their numbers in society. Using their numbers in prisons as some sort of evidence that the system is unfair is just ridiculous, and fails to recognize these cultural differences.
It is well known that American Indians have a serious problem with alcohol, far greater than other races. Why that is true, I don't know, but it is a fact. I am not aware of American Indians having a particularly high crime rate in the USA, but just because I am not aware of it means nothing.
Recognizing the FACTS of individual cases should be done. No system should make the ridiculous assumption that various ethnic groups should be represented in prisons at the same proportions as they are in society. But, leftists have proven that they are not terribly intelligent, and are blinded by a perverse racism of their own - the inability to see things as they actually are.
Like MLK said, "Judge them by the content of their character, not the color of their skin." For good or bad.

So Canada, do we have a parallel to the US showing that crime is related to the government dole? Or do you prefer to just leave it at racism with no further thought?

Perhaps indigenous peoples commit more crimes than non indigenous people. Statistics seem to prove that point. It is what it is. But in all fairness start putting more non indigenous people in jail. Or start letting them out so the numbers add up to equality and fairness.

If these numbers are similar to Alaska's Inuits, the main offenses are alcohol related. Domestic violence while under the influence is a big problem.

It's sad that the "national travesty" in the headline refers to the imprisonment of these people rather than why they deserve it. The question shouldn't be why so many Native Canadians are in jail but rather why they are committing so many crimes. Answering the latter would require a hard look at what they have become and the Canadian policies that have made them so unbecoming as a people.
The bottom line is Canada feels guilty over those groups who were displaced and defeated after the Europeans arrived, and its extended apology has completely ruined them as individuals. It has turned what were once proud people into the national travesty referred to in the headline.
Second, the article perpetuates the myth of the indigenous. Merriem-Webster is instructive: "INDIGENOUS applies to that...which, as far as can be determined, has never been introduced or brought from elsewhere." All the peoples of North America originally came from somewhere else. It's just a question of when. How long ago someone's ancestors migrated to a country should be irrelevant yet Canadian native people are allowed to claim special status, implying subtly that their ancestors belonged here more than mine, and it has ruined them.
As a plain fact of age, I have been here longer most of the Canadian natives who are in prison. I have as much right to be in this world as they do, and I have no responsibility to care for or about them more than anyone else. I don't owe them an apology. I don't owe them anything except the innate opportunity that comes from being born in a modern developed country.
Native Canadians should be thankful for that opportunity instead of squandering it.

The Guardian's protest about demographically disproportionate detention of indigenous people is specious. Since it begins with an assertion that is completely false, nothing that follows even deserves consideration.
Nobody currently alive qualifies to be called indigenous to the Americas, and as far as the archaeological record shows nobody ever did. Because no part of the human race ever originated here. (Every human who ever lived here either came here from somewhere else, or descends from somebody who came here from somewhere else.)

Equal opportunity jail. What a concept! Make arrests, hold trials, and put people in jail following a detailed ethnic chart. What could go wrong?
Perhaps indigenous persons haven't gotten with the program?
What about the idea of folk becoming citizens and following the law? Is that too hard?
If your ethnic culture is in disagreement with the culture of the country, that is your problem to solve. I was born in California. I had little choice. I was educated in public and private schools, and all had the same idea: the nation is built on certain principles and I must live by them.
This took a lot of work. Don't kill, don't steal, don't lie are cultural norms. They are not innate.
Some cultures do not have these norms. Killing is very important to certain Imams; they urge killing as a part of obeying the Prophet.
Cultures are like biological organisms: they reject foreign bodies. Think of our immune response: pollen enters our noses, is identified as foreign, and we sneeze. So lawbreakers enter our culture and our culture sneezes, putting the offending body away.
Anything else is anarchy.

Different groups have different levels of schizophrenia (a genetic disease). If your group has a higher percentage then you will also have a higher percentage of the violent variety of victim.
It does not help bring down that rate to lock up more white women to balance all scales.

We have seen this "travesty" highlighted before and the cause is the same in Canada as in the US, those who commit crimes tend to go to prison more than others.

I wasn't aware that prisons were representational bodies. As for the percentages of "indigenous" inmates, perhaps 30% or more crimes are committed by them. If only 5% of them were sentenced to prison, yet they were committing 50% of the crimes, how would that be fair? It is the same with any minority, as it is with blacks in the U.S. Prisons do not exist to represent certain ethnicities or races. They exist for another purpose.

Liberals always draw the wrong conclusions about everything. Apparently these people are committing more crimes. It is so very simple.

2 possible solutions.
a) start jailing immigrants.
b) Build a big fence around Toronto.

OK---- then please tell me the crime rate in proportion to their population. There's a significant number that lib do-gooders always seem to leave out.

My latest Ancestry update shows that I have ancestors from what could be called Russian Eskimos, from an island up towards the North Pole.
The island had a population of 200 native eskimos, where they hunted and fished, trapped, and maintained reindeer herds, living off the land.
I guess that means I should be allowed to commit a felony, but not be imprisoned, applying Canadian logic.

So are they upset that a bunch of innocent people got sent to prison?
No, it sounds like they are guilty people who just happen to be of a certain race.
But aren't we supposed to be "color blind" and judge a person solely by their actions?!?!?!? I guess that is only true if you are a white male. For everyone else, there are quotas!!!!!

As in the USA, white Marxists excuse away criminality in People of Color as being caused by poverty and racism rather than by a cultural deficit, as all cultures are equal but nonwhite cultures are morally superior. The article later notes that Indigenous-Canadians also are most likely to be homicide victims (it would be a thoughtcrime to add, "at the hands of other Indigenous-Canadians").
