As far as can be determined, the question of whether the Senate should conduct a trial or dismiss the spurious articles of impeachment as unworthy of trial by vote of the majority, is being addressed as a matter of President Trump’s political convenience.
Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is doubtless sincere and may be accurate in saying that the acquittal that is almost certain to result from a trial will clear the president more convincingly than the Republican majority determining at the outset that the charges are frivolous and vexatious harassment and simply should be rejected.(Snip)
the Democratic line will be they caught the president in wrongful acts but the trained

I am torn between the two
On the one hand I do not believe the charges are worth the time and effort of a trial. On the other hand I would like to see Biden, Schiff, and his whistle Blower, and even Nancy Pelosi brought forth as wirness's and belittled and torn apart by defense.
The House has made history, no doubt of that, but history is going to give Nancy Pelosi and her gang a black eye.

Article above suggests republicans might be over analyzing this impeachment stuff and this article proves it. The longer it goes the worse it gets. Show the democrats some contempt and throw the stuff in the trash. On national television. How Conrad Black is considered a brilliant "thinker" is beyond me.

One last observation. "Impeachment must run it's course"? Three plus years isn't enough? How about five more years? Smart man this Conrad Black. Let a no crime impeachment run it's course. What liberal bs.

Acquitted or dismissed: It won't matter. Democrats will cry the same old sob stories about unfairness and partisanship. President Trump will be reelected this year. The House will turn over and Pelosi will have to relinquish the gavel. America will celebrate!

Glad Conrad Black thinks the American taxpayers can keep paying for these ridiculous legal events. We pay taxes so that elected officials can run this country. All the Democrats have done since Donald Trump was elected is get in the way.

If there are to be witnesses called, they should only be called by republicans. Give the Crats a taste of their own medicine and cut them off at the knees. Let them throw a fit. It may not be right but it is fair.

The Democrats have clearly been defending and protecting the corrupt Joe and Hunter Biden’s activities in Ukraine where millions US foreign aid dollars may well have been kicked back into the younger Biden’s pockets. What’s why the Democrats started their impeachment inquisition, that is all political, in the first place. Essentially the Democrats are telling the country that since Joe Biden may turn out to be the 2020 Democrat nominee that President Trump violated his constitutional powers and the law by hiring a private lawyer to conduct an investigation of the Bidens suspected corrupt activities in Ukraine at the time that Joe Biden was Barack Obama’s Vice-President overseeing US foreign policy and the doling out of large amounts of US foreign aid money to Ukraine. The problem with that is that there is no US law or constitutional provision that prohibits any US person from doing what President Trump asked the current Ukrainian President to do, cooperate with the US Attorney General in future inquiries regarding corrupt activities by US persons in Ukraine. Now we are about to see if the wimpy Republican Senators are going to defend and protect Trump or end up capitulating to the partisan Democrats again.

I think McConnell will do the right thing for the country. Thank God he's not a grandstander and is going to follow the rules for the senate....no witnesses.
Let the Dems twist and turn. They started this charade and now the adults in the senate get to finish it. Period end of story.
And that includes Susan Collins and her posse.

I don't understand what Bolton or any other "witness" is supposed to bring that we don't already know. We have the transcript of the call. Bolton is not a mind-reader, so neither he nor anyone else can say what Pres. Trump's "motive" was. What was done was either legal or illegal. If they cannot point to a place in the law that was broken, then it should not be impeachable. Saying "abuse of power" is an opinion. Far from Pres. Trump abusing power, it is the DEMOCRATS who have abused power! Therefore, the only witnesses that could be called would be those who can throw more light on the relationship of the so-called whistleblower and Adam Schiff and his staff. If and hopefully when we regain the house, Adam Schiff needs to be impeached or whatever they do to representatives who abuse power.

I agree with Black. The Senate should dissect the information as provided by the House and eviscerate each piece. THEN provide a summary rejection and condemnation of the House's process that resulted in a partisan and frivolous impeachment.
I also like the idea to get a SCOTUS judgement "to clarify whether the Constitution’s enumeration of justifications for impeachment is exhaustive, or only illustrative". A rational answer will throw up a legal roadblock against future partisan abuses.

Black believes (and explains his thinking) that acquittal in trial is better for PDJT than the rejection of the charges by the Republican-majority Senate. He further believes the calling of witnesses - if it occurs - will harm the Democrats more than President Trump. He has some pretty strong words for Pelosi, Nadler and Schiff (“abuse of power” for the latter two), to the point where he believes the second Article is actually “contempt of Schiff”. Another good Conrad Black opinion piece.
