Caught red-handed with solid evidence showing it shot down a Ukrainian passenger plane – tragically killing all 176 people aboard – the government of Iran had to admit Saturday that it was guilty of the horrific attack.
Iran bears full responsibility for this unprovoked mass killing and should be required to pay compensation to the families of the dead passengers and the airline – although no amount of money can make up for the lost lives.
And airlines from around the world would be wise now to consider whether flying into Iran is worth the risk. If some international airlines stop service to Iran it would strike yet another economic blow

Here is what went wrong. Badly educated, trained and probably half asleep moron who shares religious views with a 7th century pedophile messenger pulled trigger and saw a jetliner go Boom.

This is an excellent article explaining the breakdown in command and control within the Tehran air defense sector last week.

What went wrong? We should have taken out their missile launching facilities at the same time we took out their top terrorist goon.

What's interesting about this article is the parallel to the IRGC and the Waffen SS in WWII. Both had a separate military structure from the regular military. As number 1 says at some point, elite, special units of dictatorships degrade to the status of cruel cavemen with any previous tactical and operational acumen disappearing. When this happens the only advantage they have lies in their street cred to strike fear in the heart of the enemy. The German Army and especially the Waffen SS never seemed to realize the American Army of 1944 - 45 was very different from the Army of 1942. Kampfgruppe Peiper in the Battle pf the Bulge had the best and newest heavy tanks and experienced infantry but was harassed and eventually stopped by an engineer battalion and anti-tank gun detachments. His solution was to have his men execute American POWs (something he also personally did BTW) thinking we would run away en masse. The IRGC I think is at the same point. It relies on a fantasy tactical proficiency but the reality is they are a bunch thug terrorists who have now run up against a different POTUS and a US military unleashed. If the Iranian civilians continue to protest and pressure the mullahs, I think the IRGC will fold like a cheap suit.

Agree with all posts. I was philosophizing on my bike ride this morning, about 3rd world countries and what they have in common. Bad geography. Worship of pagan gods. Corrupt governments. Terrible social structure, mostly a 2-caste sytem (the haves and the have-nots). Hatred of outsiders.
Very hard to overcome, I think.

It was a disaster waiting to happen. Imagine you are the commander of an anti-aircraft missile site and your government is the kind that punishes any failure with death. You know that your country just attacked the Great Satan with missiles and you are told to expect retaliation. Right in the timeframe of maximum probability here comes a low, bomber-sized plane. What if you fail to shoot it down? Don't blame the flunkie who pulled the trigger, blame the mindless fanatics who started the hostilities.

When asking the question of why commercial airlines are flying into Iran, another question pops into my mind, why would anyone want to fly there?
What were all those Canadians doing in Iran?

I would think the anti air craft leader would have been capable of the difference between two concepts. Flying into Iran and flying away from Iran. Those flying away from Iran are likely not a threat. I suppose it can be blamed on a faulty radar system that covers too small an area.

Doesn't it seem possible that this was done on purpose, with intention to blame it on US? Is that beyond the pale for the mullahs?

Finally I read an article that identifies the fact that Iran is being led by a bunch of incompetent morons: why would they still be allowing commercial civilian aircraft to operate during an armed conflict? Why would the supposed "experienced" crew of the Ukrainian airliner choose to take off during an armed crisis in a potential war zone?
Was somebody leaving Iran in that plane that the Iranian regime did not want to let leaver? Possible defections? If the air defense battery had been ordered to destroy the airliner and carried out their orders it's most likely that they and any other witnesses have been eliminated.

#3, assuming a "breakdown" in command and control, assumes something that does not even exist in any modern sense. The Iranians are 7th century barbarian farmers who have been given modern weapons systems.
And terrified local commanders, not actually working in any large, networked, command with a larger view of what was going on in their air space. Since they had no larger view, they just "killed anything that moved".
And letting a civil airliner fly in that uncontrolled, and panicky, unprofessional environment was an idiot move.
I will stand by my original theory that some lazy, scared fool had the SAM system set to "automatic" so that it would kill any target that showed up on it's radar screens. The 7th century barbarians want their "magic" to just do the job.

I love the theory that they thought that they were shooting down "a Tomahawk cruise missile".
The Tomahawk cruises at less than 200 ft altitude except in extremely mountainous terrain. In most cases of flat terrain cruising at 50 ft or even lower altitudes to avoid detection until the last second by SAM systems. The Ukrainian 737 was at (various reports) 12-13,000 ft and climbing. Very much NOT a Tomahawk flight path. I doubt if a T'hawk ever gets to that altitude.
