A San Francisco Bay Area city official wants to explore the possibility of using a cruise ship to house up to 1,000 homeless people as the state continues to struggle with the homelessness crisis. Oakland City Council President Rebecca Kaplan told a council meeting on Tuesday that the ship would be brought to the Port of Oakland, but port officials said Wednesday the move would be 'untenable'. 'We respect President Kaplan's desire to address homelessness but Port of Oakland docks are designed to work

The cruise ship, if used, will be totally trashed within days.

So the Port of Oakland officials say "We respect President Kaplan's desire to address homelessness but
But, seriously, this Kaplan person has no desire to house anyone. This Kaplan person just wants these people out of sight so as to put them out of mind. Then, wherever they end up, the problem will disappear.

Get real, the only cruise ship that would be on offer would be some worn out tub that the cruise line is getting ready to scrap, as look at the streets where the homeless live now, after a couple of weeks of becoming a temporary home for the homeless, the cruise ship would resemble those streets. Because of the lack of personal hygiene and overall filthy conditions, get ready for a major respiratory and stomach virus epidemic on board that would probably cause the ship to be quarantined.

How about the Oakland Coliseum? The Raiders play their last game there this weekend. They'll just have to be out of there before baseball starts.

During our last cruise we were constantly reminded that a cruise ship is a floating incubator for disease - hand sanitizing stations everywhere, reminders about hygiene posted in many locations. Even among 'normal' people, it is recognized that disease can flash through the passengers like lightening because of the restricted spaces and common areas. Putting the homeless in a cruise ship is like sentencing them to death - unless extraordinary measures are put into place - lots of staff constantly cleaning and disinfecting. What will it cost? From Rebecca Kaplan's perspective, it doesn't matter. The homeless will be out of sight and she doesn't have to pay for it - other people do!

The ONLY reason a cruise ship is tied up at the dock is to take on fuel, WATER, food and other necessities of life such as unloading SEWAGE, trash and people who really want to get off.
Said Oakland Official is an IDIOT.

How about not housing them anywhere. Quit giving them food and offer them jobs cleaning up feces from the streets

There must be an island way out in some ocean where they can dump the homeless onto. One that has trees with big leaves for bowel movement capabilities.

Good idea. The all night buffet should be popular and I hope they don’t run out of jumbo shrimp and crab legs at 3:00am. Room service should be great too. Come to think of it, I’m going to become homeless in SFO and get me some of that!

Let me propose an 'INTELLIGENT' solution.
1. Get all of them OFF all drugs and Alcohol...Rehab.
2. Train them to do WORK.
3. Help them get a job.
4. House them in politicians homes.
5. If they don't keep up, put them on a rocket to the MOON...one days rations.
I really like #4!

A cruise ship? The homeless will just want to live on the poop deck in cardboard shacks.

Forget a cruise ship. You have a perfectly good island out in SF Bay called Alcatraz with plenty of rooms and beds sitting empty just waiting for the street people to come. They can have their own island! It would get them off the streets, use an existing building designed to be used by people who do not take are of where they live, and the citizens of SF and Oakland would be rid of the street people.

"Kaplan said she has been contacted by cruise ship companies about providing a ship for emergency housing."
Either they have ships they really want to get rid of, or she is lying.
