Because It Gives Them Anxiety

Millennials aren’t interested in participating in the office “Secret Santa,” according to a new study by the British job-hunting website, Jobsite, because the practice is “stressful” and anxiety-inducing. “Secret Santa” is, of course, a regular practice among work colleagues during the holidays. It’s often preferred to other practices because organizers can limit the budget spent on gifts, and it doesn’t align with any specific religious holiday, so it doesn’t leave anyone out of the loop (though, of course, jolly ol’ St. Nick is identified with Christmas).

I call bs on this. These "reports" are only meant to incite people.

Why would a jobsite be fussing around with the Secret Santa thing? It is uaually something organized by a few within an office and those who wish to participate can do so while others skip it. I agree with #1. Besides, I worked in many companies and never saw any Secret Santa organizing going on and that was some years ago. It was most apt to show up in women’s clubs.

One year we had an office Secret Santa - I didn't know the name I drew, nor did anyone else who was asked, so I bought a nice bottle of wine. In return, I received a very shopworn ornament of dubious origin, design, and vintage from a woman who ran the company retail gift shop (so much for the secret part). I sympathize with those who have had similar experiences or can't afford the added holiday expense depending on the $ limit.

Just read this. May be the most absurd article we’ve seen here in quite a while. If it is all secret, how can it cause stress? I’ve never seen a company promote this...

Sorry, but I agree. I don't like being put in the position of pretending that another person has upheld the social contract they just violated. It goes against my straight shooter, objective truth grain. Also, at a time of year when I'm already over-committed, don't need the hassle. Finally, throw office pot-lucks in the same mix. My kids only get 2 or 3 home cooked meals a week. Why am I cooking for co-workers? So tell you what, I'll give you $20 cash if you just leave me alone. It would be worth it.

The last few years at my last job, everyone bought a gift card for the same amount and put it in a bag or box. We drew numbers to determine the order for picking a gift box or bag from the choices. We allowed 'steals', but a card could only be stolen 3 times. We had a very diverse group, all ethnic groups and religions, and we had a lot of fun with this approach.

I skipped participating in this Secret Santa activity at my workplace. It was voluntary exchange. Just one more thing to do during a busy time of year plus spending money on some trivial gift. But there were some that really love this kind of thing.
I don't see why this would cause anxiety. What will these millennials do when a big problem comes along?

Millennial's can take their anxiety and put it where the sun doesn't shine...GROW UP children or your life will be hell made by your own hands! Nothing anyone else does has anything to do with your lousy life, it's all about YOU and it's YOUR FAULT!

Same story, different source a couple of days ago. So, don't play the game if you don't like it.

Communism is getting close to the bottom of destroying this country. This is a fine example of their infectious tyranny.

I have always frowned upon the over-commercialization of Christmas and I am far from a millenial. Bringing in cookies and candy, etc. is nice but the extra money spent on people you simply work with at a time of year where the focus should be on friends and family is not fun. However, banning is not the answer, voluntary participation is the way to go.

I would be extremely embarrassed if I had I raised one of these snowflakes. Good grief! As a parent your job is to prepare your children for the grown up world. You are a complete failure if your children are traumatized by a Secret Santa gift exchange. These kids need to grow a backbone. Protesting everything under the sun and whining about anything that annoys you is self-defeating. They should get their focus off themselves and start to look outward. Can you even begin to imagine this group facing a real enemy? Surrender would be their first and only strategy. The greatest generation puts them to shame.

One of the most entertaining Christmas party events ever was the great upset by one employee whose very expensive water vessel, suitable for portable hydration, elicited moans and groans, passed around as the booby prize. She finally grabbed it from the last one holding it, gave her some money, and proclaimed how much the thing sold for at retail...to another gale of derisive laughter.
