A Florida chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is hoping to trademark the term “fake news.”As ridiculous as that may sound, Teen Vogue reporter Emily Bloch explained that her chapter of the organization believes “a joke sometimes hits harder than the truth.” “So yes, this is satire. It’s a joke,” Bloch wrote. “But it’s a joke with a point, and as any student of public discourse will tell you, a joke sometimes hits harder than the truth. And if anyone accuses us of trolling the president, well, nothing else seems to work with him, so what do we have to lose?” Covering education and government for The Florida Times-Union

It is in the popular use, so would think it cannot be trademarked. Attorneys get rich...

I'm a lawyer but not a trademark lawyer, but I know enough trademark law to understand that it shows their incompetence. You have to use your mark in commerce. They have not. It has to be yours. It is not. If it is merely descriptive it's harder to get trademarked. It has to overcome First Amendment concerns. It cannot. Those are for starters. So they're incompetent as reporters and would be incompetent as lawyers. Silly.

Mr. Trump could just use the old-fashioned term "FRAUD" to describe 99.999 % of the news.

Never work. It has been in common use for far too long. Can't do it.
They really are stupid, and the President REALLY does drive them to insanity, on a hourly and daily basis. This is wonderful.

It must be a VERY small group who consider themselves professional journalists.
And, if you enjoy the title of professional, you have a higher level of expectation, in the eyes of the law, to know better, to tell the truth, etc...
That Emily Bloch seems to think she needs to troll this president to get his attention is amazing, considering he's likely provided them more access than any president ever. He holds regular "pressers" and takes nearly any topic, and answers their questions.
This contrasts to the Obama admin who bragged about how they used townhall-style meetings which gave the impression people were getting access, but was designed so the Obama team could manage the message, particularly with follow-up questions. But hey, the "professional" journalists seemed to think that was terrific.
Same with Bill Clinton admin who "spun" (lied), and were marveled for how they did it.

These journalists will need a thesaurus to list all the possible terms synonymous with "fake news," because Trump can simply employ different words from our common language pool if they are successful in the courts to tie him up.

Our country and culture is becoming dumber hour by hour thanks to a corrupt and evil media. This kind of mind numbing stupidity is the end result.

The dems' MSM is trying to interrupt the President's communication with the people! They refuse to even show his speeches! As an example, they are blocking one right now, but thankfully OAN is showing it. A few channels like OAN show each of his speeches LIVE, but the alphabets continue to censure the President. Shame on the manipulative PC press advocates!!!

How about trademarking the term "Go Fxxx yourself"? So you can know what Trump would say about it.

Professional journalists? There are no journalists professional or otherwise. The last journalists turned out the lights in the news room back in the 60s.

If the owners of Microsoft attempted to trademark the word "Windows" would home improvement stores be forced to sell photon portals? Would Dan Rather be allowed to trademark "Courage." Heck the Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz used it first. If it works I'll try to trademark the word "Stop" so I can get royalties from street signs.

FTA, "“So yes, this is satire. It’s a joke,” Bloch wrote." Ha ha, very funny.
Also FTA, Emily Bloch (sic) "also worries that the general public may not know “that journalists follow ethical codes and face losing our jobs and getting blacklisted by the industry if we so much as think about presenting ‘fake news.'”
Now this is a better joke.

You are right, #23, the second statement is a HUGE joke.
"Ethical codes" LOL! Yeah.
See the story about the Miami Herald being entirely unwilling to cover the fact that the only "earwittness" in the Zimmerman trial was a total fraud, and Ben Crump knew it, and probably the Prosecutor also knew it. Yet their ficticious "ethical code" prevents them from covering it.

This is what I call "garbage". Yellow journalism has been around for decades. Does anyone remeber the Spanish-American War? Yellow journalism was rampant across the nation. it was used to stir up war with Spain. It worked. The author of this article is himself spreading yellow journalism by deliberately not being truthful about what most journalists do in all forms of media today. Trump should use the term "Yellow Journalism" to describe what the fake media press have been doing to us for longer than I have been alive.
