CNN public editor: What actually is CNN?

When I think of CNN—when I watch it, or when I scroll through Twitter, or when I think of what I want to write about it—I think of what Jeff Zucker, CNN president, said in 2017: “The idea that politics is sport is undeniable, and we understood it and approached it that way.” I think about it when I watch Chris Cuomo bring on bad guests, and when I ponder his half-comprehensible interviews with Rudy Giuliani or Cory Lewandowski. I think about it when I see online skepticism over Jake Tapper’s breaking story that the Ukraine whistleblower was a Democrat, and debate over whether he should have brought on dishonest

This Emily Tamkin is hilarious in a sad sort of way: she doesn't want CNN to interview anyone who she disagrees with ("liars" like Jim Jordan), but she wants the opinion pieces to pretend to be straight news. Talk about self-delusion! She wants CNN to provide her with a completely delusional world view, which they are trying mightily to do but are somewhat constrained by the world-wide ridicule for their dishonesty. Aggressive ignorance is almost bliss. At least CNN makes the National Enquirer look like a relatively reliable news source.

Truly... a joke, #1! Stelter complaining about sensationalism after hosting Avenatti countless times .. Unbelievable. I don't have cable, so I don't see these programs. I've just read about them and seen reports about them, so I guess that might disqualify my sentiments.

I agree with #5. Journalism is dead and this fact rest squarely on the shoulders of CNN, in my opinion. After all, they started the 24/7 sensationalist news cycle which has morphed into opinionated commentators and entertainment-style "news" shows. This has given us such fools as Rachel Maddow, Chris Cuomo, Anderson Cooper, among others. I also have to point out the Bill O'Reilly's, Sean Hannity's and others on Fox. They are all of the same ilk IMO, they must generate ratings in order to make money for their advertisers and in doing so, every little news story is blown up into an emergency and sensationalized. I cannot watch any of them anymore, not even Fox News...except for The Five, which I occasionally watch on YouTube so that I can fast forward through Juan Williams' and Donna Brasile's ramblings.

Though I am sure Cuomo et al. agree, it is widely acknowledged that the bosses, e.g. Zucker and the like minded heads of other organizations, call the shots as to how the on air talent should behave. In other words, ratings and $ trump (no pun intended) decency or the truth.

While many of the headlines from Ronan Farrow’s bombshell book relate to the shocking allegation of rape against Matt Lauer, the NBC News division is in chaos with its leadership Andy Lack and Noah Oppenheim “quivering in their suits,” according to multiple insiders. The book “Catch and Kill” details how NBC decided to kill the Harvey Weinstein exposé after the movie mogul effectively “laid siege” to NBC News chairman Lack and NBC News president Oppenheim during Farrow’s investigation. Farrow reports that in a September 2017 phone call, Lack told Weinstein’s attorney, “We’ve told Harvey we are not doing a story.”
Did Jim Comey spy on Loretta Lynch? 3 replies

Was then-FBI chief Jim Comey spying on his boss, Attorney General Loretta Lynch? He apparently had a “highly placed informant” in her office reporting on her doings as of May 2016, which is pretty darn close to “spying” in most books. We know: Comey famously considers it an “investigation,” not “spying,” when it’s official FBI business — but it’s hard to see how secretly monitoring the AG’s office could be official work for the Bureau. And secretly monitoring Lynch is exactly what the new book from Pulitzer-winning reporter James B. Stewart indicates Comey was doing. It was the peak of the Hillary Clinton email investigation, and Comey

Hotels in California will have to stop giving guests small plastic shampoo bottles under a new law. Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday he had signed a law banning hotels from giving guests plastic bottles filled with shampoo, conditioner or soap. The law takes effect in 2023 for hotels with more than 50 rooms and 2024 for hotels with less than 50 rooms. Violators could be fined $500 for a first offense and $2,000 for subsequent violations. The law follows similar actions by some of the world's largest hotel chains.

Mark Zaid and Andrew Bakaj, the attorneys representing the whistleblower at the center of Democrats' impeachment inquiry, acknowledged in a statement on Wednesday that their client "has come into contact with presidential candidates from both parties" -- but insisted that the contact involved the politicians' roles as "elected officials – not as candidates." The lawyers' abrupt disclosure came shortly after The Washington Examiner reported that Intelligence Community Inspector General Michael Atkinson told lawmakers the whistleblower worked “or had some type of professional relationship” with one of the Democratic presidential candidates, citing three sources familiar with Atkinson’s interview with lawmakers on Friday.

It's becoming increasingly likely that Hillary Clinton, the historic failure of a politician, will enter the 2020 Democratic primary. She recently picked up her first official endorsement, and has wisely bided her time as two of the early frontrunners have succumbed to health problems on the campaign trail. With Bernie Sanders (heart attack) and Joe Biden (cognitive dysentery) struggling to remain viable, the door is wide open for Hillary to rush in and remind the voting public why she's still the most electable Democrat in the country. In fact, she's already doing just that. While promoting her new book, co-authored with her daughter Chelsea Clinton

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has a clear duty to call an immediate House vote to authorize an official impeachment inquiry — if she dares. The White House informed her today that the Executive Branch won’t play along with the lawless “inquiry” that House Democrats have been engaged in — which President Trump has quite fairly termed “a totally compromised kangaroo court.” White House counsel Pat Cipollone’s letter to Pelosi spells out the problems. While the Constitution clearly gives the House the power to begin impeachment proceedings, it does not give the speaker the privilege of declaring them all by herself.

If you want to stop Donald Trump from making unilateral decisions regarding war and peace, then stop letting all presidents make unilateral decisions about war and peace. It’s really quite simple. Trump can abruptly pull back U.S. troops from northern Syria because Congress, having abdicated its foreign policy responsibilities long ago, has no leverage to stop him. When Congress passed the War Powers Resolution as the Vietnam War was winding down, it gave presidents the power to send troops abroad for 60 days in response to any “national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces.” If the president failed to gain

Despite a decline of more than 60% over the last four months, the number of unauthorized migrants stopped at the southern border reached nearly 1 million in the 2019 fiscal year -- the most recorded since at least 2014. "These are numbers that no immigration system in the world is designed to handle -- including ours," Mark Morgan, the acting head of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, told reporters in the White House briefing room on Tuesday. More than 52,000 migrants were stopped at the U.S. southern border in September, Morgan added. T

The federal government has opened hundreds of thousands of acres of public lands in California for oil and gas drilling as part of a broader effort to strengthen energy independence. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued its final decision Friday, allowing oil and gas leases on plots mostly in the Central Valley and parts of the Central Coast. The 725,000 acres of public land in Central California had been off-limits to oil and gas drilling since 2013. The plan, initially announced in May, was part of a Trump administration goal to make the U.S. energy-independent. Critics have called it a string of giveaways to the industry.

Washington - Each state in America has an official state bird, usually an iconic species that helps define the landscape. Minnesota chose the common loon, whose haunting wails echo across the state’s northern lakes each summer. Georgia picked the brown thrasher, a fiercely territorial bird with a repertoire of more than 1,000 song types. But as the planet warms and birds across the country relocate to escape the heat, at least eight states could see their state birds largely or entirely disappear from within their borders during the summer, according to a new study.

On the other side, the conservative group Concerned Women of America pressed that changing the meaning of “sex” in the Civil Rights Act “would greatly undermine the women's movement.” They held signs that read, "Sex is not Gender."

In the latest edition of La Repubblica, Pope Francis' longtime atheist friend and interviewer, Eugenio Scalfari, claims that the Pope told him that once Jesus Christ became incarnate, he was a man, a "man of exceptional virtues" but "not at all a God." The teaching of the Catholic Church and most Christian churches is that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was incarnated as fully man and fully God. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states, "The unique and altogether singular event of the Incarnation of the Son of God does not mean that Jesus Christ is part God and part man, nor does it imply that he is the result
