A Virginia teacher who refused to use a transgender student’s preferred pronouns and was fired as a result filed a lawsuit Monday against the school district.
Peter Vlaming, a French teacher who was unanimously fired by the West Point School Board in December 2018, said in his lawsuit he was fired because he exercised his First Amendment right to free speech.
“This isn’t just about a pronoun, it’s about what that pronoun means,” explained Tyson Langhofer, of Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), which represents Vlaming.
Langhofer, senior counsel director of the ADF Center for Academic Freedom, added, “This was never about anything Peter said or did; only about what the

I would use whatever pronoun the student wanted. It doesn’t change the reality one bit. The teacher lost his job being too inflexible where he didn’t need to be.

I hope this is Oberlin 2.0 and Mr. Vlaming gets his due $$ in court, along with a little revenge. Yes, revenge. This wasn't a simple firing-this is mind control by liberals attempting to inculcate their warped values upon others with threats and coercion. I hope the court sticks it IN YOUR FACE, West Point School Board. The only sanction these fanatics understand is money.

I disagree Highlander. He is a French teacher. Gender matters in the construction of their language. It matters because truth and authenticity matter. And when is it ever right to give students power over teachers?

I would not pick a battle over how to address a student who is confused and ignorant. There are many other students in that school who needed to have that good French teacher and he became unavailable to them because of one issue. I stand by what I wrote.

The student is uncomfortable over a pronoun, but is perfectly ok with pretending to be a male?????

#1 The school is basically saying that the student has a right to their beliefs and the teacher doesn't. This is how our society got to the place it is. By conservatives standing silently by and obeying the demands put forward by a tiny percent of the population. I applaud this teacher for standing up for himself. I wish more people would.

My brothers two sons were raised with the last name of their step father. He did not adopt them - my brother lived 17 hours away - so it was easy for this to happen. The school said back in the 80s even if the kid wants to be called by Mickey Mouse, we will call them Mickey Mouse. When they turned 16 and got their driver's license their legal name was my brother's. They now go by his name, and have animosity toward their mother for a host of things - the name being just one. I would not have picked that fight, but it will be interesting to see how it ends.

DSM-5 describes Gender Dysphoria as a mental disorder (DSM-5); those so afflicted deserve compassion. I agree with Highlander. On the other hand, coerced speech is incompatible with the First Amendment. It is not the government's role to mandate either compassion or psychotherapy.

#8 And if they are crazy and think they are God does compassion require us to bow before them? Enabling is not compassion. And one person's perspective on what constitutes compassion can never override another person's rights and freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution.

I think this is crap. They are forcing people to "go along" with a mental disorder. Truth doesn't matter, if you are right, your are wrong and you must shut up about it. Don't you dare speak the truth if it hurts someones feelings. What a mess.

I know what gender means. And the genderphobic left is so terrified that it might confine them that they seek to redefine gender and destroy anyone who stands in their way.
Time to fight back against these poor terrified bullies.

The definition of lying goes beyond saying something that is false...it must include intent to deceive. This is not a "free speech" or religious tolerance case. He was given reasonable instructions to use certain gender pronouns in reference to this student by his superior. He did not, to my knowledge, request an accommodation for his "religious beliefs", only said he refused to "lie" by using the "appropriate" pronoun.
Who was he deceiving by complying with the order?

This is French Vlaming is teaching references to male or female, la and le, is important. Grade the student on the box 'it' checked when 'it' entered school. Sex is more exact gender not so much. Transgender is just a confused mental game being played on non-confuse people. I hope Vlaming wins this. A school board ruling is about as low as it gets when it comes to deciding what we should do and think. That in itself is enough to make support the French teacher.

A great quote from Theodore Dalrymple:
"In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, nor to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is to co-operate with evil, and in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control."

I don't accept that you can tell another person how to talk. I am ok with you deciding on how you will talk, but the other party to the conversation has the same right. If I can dictate what you say, and how you say it, I would suppose I can dictate what you think, which is exactly what the left supposes.

I am just amazed West Point has a French teacher. If you thought the transgender in Gloucester was a surprise, the only thing West Point had going was the Chesapeake Corp, a stinky paper mill. Cross one bridge, five minutes later, cross another one and you are out of town. Still looks like 1950. Hard to believe they have a transgender student. Must be more carpetbaggers.
