Why I became an American citizen

Original Article

Posted By: Imright, 9/23/2019 10:44:08 AM

I am an English girl who moved to America because I fell in love with a boy. I became an American because I fell in love with this country and its ideals. I met Neil in England. Three months after our first date we were engaged. Within another three months, we had moved to Washington, D.C. It was a sudden, unplanned adventure, and it felt like my life had just split into a ‘before’ and ‘after.’ Unlike so many immigrants who come here because they are fleeing something – perhaps violence or political persecution – I wasn’t escaping. My story is less dramatic but shared by many.

Mrs. Gorsuch, I had no idea that you came to America as a legal immigrant. Warmest welcome to America, Ma'am.

Call it coincidence or maybe more to read this today. I am 2 weeks away from my (legal) immigration interview. I will be an ex-Canuck. I think that's about 2 steps from British but I'm in Texas and know the two step. Thank you L dotters / Americans for accepting me as a US citizen when I get the opportunity to take that oath of allegiance.

My story is similar to the one Mrs. Gorsuch talks about in as much I came to this fabulous country having accepted a proposal of marriage from a former ex pat boyfriend working in the US airplane industry. I had never entertained a thought of living anywhere else but England. It meant leaving behind a loving family, but unlike early immigrants who really did say goodbye for ever, almost all of our family and friends have flown over to visit us and fallen in love with America once they got to interact with the people here. They were all won over. We became citizens , if we wanted to vote then we had to be citizens. Now 50 years on , we look back on our many amazing experiences and appreciate more fully the wisdom of the founding fathers and the Constitution that each of must uphold if we want a legacy for generations after us.

My grandfather came from England in 1896. He worked at a woolen mill (that is now part of Mystic Seaport). He was an elected official in Mystic. His name is on the Bascule Bridge in the center of town.

The first part of Sanders’ tweet, though, is mostly accurate. The National Rifle Association's money doesn't corrupt Republican legislators. Instead, Republicans oppose gun control because conservative political identity is today inseparable from guns. Identity is a deeper motivator

Venus was once a habitable planet with liquid water on our surface, much like our own, until runaway climate change turned it into a hell world. New NASA computer models suggest that until 700 million years ago, temperatures ranged from 20C to 50C on the surface. NASA’s Pioneer Venus mission spotted hints that the planet had once had oceans in the 1980s - but at the time, scientists believe that it had evaporated quickly.
