A manager for a prominent private security firm that provides bodyguards to Silicon Valley executives received a concealed-gun permit from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office months after he made a $45,000 contribution to an independent committee supporting Sheriff Laurie Smith’s 2018 re-election, newly disclosed records show. The campaign contribution is one focus of an investigation by the Santa Clara County district attorney’s office into whether the sheriff gave out the coveted gun permits in exchange for campaign support, sources familiar with the probe have told The Chronicle.  Byline corrected to site style.

The decision to carry, or not carry, is only rightfully that of each individual citizen. A government that curtails its citizens' God given right to self defense is not worthy of the people's trust.

This is exactly why "Shall Issue", also known as objective standards, type of concealed carry permits is far, far better than the damnable "May Issue", also know as subjective standards. Like subjected to "lubrication" with MONEY. Corruption, pure and simple, but it is the normal thing in states with "may issue"....only buddies and donors to the sheriff get permits, to hell with the rest of you.

This is a good example why we should not have to request permission from the state to engage in a Constitutional right. Just think if we had to request police permission to post a comment on a web site or send an email each time we wanted to.

I am reminded of the congressional witness, name not recalled, who had given large amounts of campaign contributions to Dollar Bill Clinton, back in the 1990s, and who, when asked if he thought his campaign contributions to Clinton gave him special access to the federal government, said,s answer? "Well, I should hope so!"

Good point, #3. How appalled would we be at a requirement to get a background check, fingerprinting, photo and training before being able to post to a public forum like this one, or speak in public? Our 2nd Amendment right are being HEAVILY infringed on today, and that needs to stop, not be tightened down. "The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed" - it really isn't that complex, and they ARE infringing.

What I find ironic about all this is that the story is about "a security firm that provides bodyguards to Silicon Valley executives" who are vociferously against guns, except when they are used to protect themselves and their families. What typical hypocrisy!!

This is why I'm not shocked at the lack of ethics in Congress and elite politics. It starts at the grass roots level (fix my ticket/ get me out of jury duty) and follows these grifters right up to the top, or at least as high as they go! The fix just gets more expensive.

Trump Sanctions Iran Again, Inching

Just days after declaring the United States was “locked and loaded” in response to a suspected Iranian attack on key Saudi Arabian oil facilities, U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that he directed the Treasury Department to “substantially increase” sanctions on Iran. That raises several questions: What is left to sanction? How much more could it hurt Iran than losing almost all of its oil exports? And would those new sanctions be a prelude to U.S. military action against Iran or its proxies—or a substitute?

The National Rifle Association on Monday sued the city of San Francisco over a declaration deeming the lobbying group a “domestic terrorist organization,” according to The Associated Press. The city Board of Supervisors passed the resolution last week, with Supervisor Catherine Stefani saying she was moved to draft it following August’s shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. In the lawsuit, filed in the Northern District of California, the NRA accused the city of maintaining a blacklist, asking the court to “instruct elected officials that freedom of speech means you cannot silence or punish those with whom you disagree.”

The European Union has extended for a further five years anti-dumping duties on Chinese bicycles, the bloc said in its official journal on Thursday, after concluding that any lifting of measures would lead to a flood of imports. Imported Chinese bicycles have been subject to anti-dumping duties since 1993, currently with an import tariff of up to 48.5%. The extended duties are the latest in a series of EU measures against Chinese exports ranging from solar panels to steel, which have sparked strong words from Beijing. The European Union also decided in January to impose duties of up to 79.3% on imports of Chinese electronic bicycles.

Three San Diego residents filed a federal lawsuit today challenging California’s assault weapon ban, with the plaintiffs alleging that the state is violating its residents’ Second Amendment rights by its allegedly misguided definition of assault weapons. The suit, filed on behalf of James Miller, Patrick Russ and Ryan Peterson, as well as the San Diego County Gun Owners Political Action Committee, alleges that the types of firearms banned under California’s definition of assault weapons are lawfully protected under the Second Amendment. The suit calls California’s usage of the term “assault weapons,” “a politically-concocted pejorative term designed to suggest that there is an inherently unlawful or illegitimate basis for owning otherwise common firearms

RENO, Nev. - A federal appeals court on Tuesday ruled against Nevada in a battle with the U.S. government over its secret shipment of weapons-grade plutonium to a site near Las Vegas. A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied the state's appeal after a judge refused to block any future shipments to Nevada. The court in San Francisco said the matter is moot because the Energy Department already sent the radioactive material and has promised that no more will be hauled there. "The remedy Nevada sought — stopping the government from shipping plutonium from South Carolina to Nevada under the proposed action — is no longer available,"

French inventor Franky Zapata on Sunday succeeded in crossing the English Channel on a jet-powered hoverboard he designed, zooming over the Strait of Dover in just over 20 minutes. After a previous bid in July that ended with him falling into the sea, Zapata took off from Sangatte, just outside Calais in France at about 0617 GMT, on a little platform powered by five small jet engines and carrying kerosene in a backpack. Flanked by three helicopters, he reached Britain after a stop on a boat halfway through the 35-km crossing to refuel, waving to onlookers before landing safely in Saint Margaret's Bay, close to Dover on Britain's southern coast.

Nadler’s remarks were made as he spoke in Washington, D.C., at one of several global climate strike protests. “We have to make sure people feel the depth and the immediacy of this crisis, which is approaching us much more rapidly and much worse than the scientists proposed twenty years ago and ten years ago,” Nadler said. “Half measures will not do,” Nadler continued. “We are facing a crisis. If we had a world war, God forbid, the country would mobilize.”

Cory Booker has become the latest Democratic presidential candidate to back unionizing entire industries by supporting a concept called "sectoral bargaining." The idea dates back to the 1930s and involves the federal government creating union-management committees that would set wages and other work standards. The change, if adopted, would radically shift the business landscape across the U.S. Under sectoral bargaining, unions would be granted enormous power over industries, while businesses would be strictly limited in the workplace policies they could adopt. All workers in an industry would be represented by the union officials on the committees. The New Jersey senator
