Two city council members in Trenton, New Jersey, have defended the council president’s reported use of an anti-Semitic slur after she said “Jew her down” during a closed-door meeting earlier this month. Trenton City Council President Kathy McBride is facing calls to resign after she said on Sept. 5 that a city attorney negotiating a woman’s personal injury lawsuit was “able to wait her out and Jew her down” on settling for a lower amount, the New Jersey Globe reported.(Snip) “You know, it’s like a car dealer, they wanted $5,000, you Jew ‘em down to $4,000,” he told the Globe.
I’m sorry. I still use the term as it reflected in the business practices as shown in many movies, in real world situations. It is a simple business practice described.
Much better that Hillary and her “ Effing JB” tirade that drew no condemnation to speak of. Meh.

I always thought the term "Jew 'em down" was a compliment to someone negotiating skills.

It means something. It's the old slur that Jews are out to get your money, to cheat you.

I cannot tell a lie. In olden thymes that was a fairly common expression that meant “haggle during a negotiation until the price came down to an acceptable number”… I don’t remember using it, but I do remember hearing it...

This council person is an African American and I guess it makes it okay for her to use trash talk because she is black. Well, it doesn't and I'm offended by her language and I'm not even jewish. She needs to apologize or step down.

Re #4, I have never heard it used in that context. It was about haggling to get a better price.

If it makes anyone feel better, you should hear what us Jewish people say about the parsimony of the Sheep-Shaggers; er, I mean "the Scots".

It's only offensive if a white male conservative says it. THEN the libs and media go nuts. Everyone knows that.

Don Novello,as Fr. Guido Sarducci, would "Presbyterian" someone down if the price was too high. Like in 1984, all are equal, some more than others. It's a pejorative when Jew is used as a verb.

The term, Mill Hunky was a negative term to describe Eastern European immigrants who worked in the steel mills of Pittsburgh, Pa in the early 20th century.
Rather than stewing over it, the workers made it into a badge of pride, as honest, hardworking individuals. (Some wordsmiths believe the negative word 'honkie' came from the African American dialect version of of hunky. )

The words and phrases one hears early are very hard to completely purge from the mind. Your tongue may, rather opportunistically, grab onto one at any time to make a point. So I urge tolerance for such mistakes.
McBride apparently used the term more that once. Not a good sign.

Just say, "Arab them down," instead. It's the same thing.

I'm sorry, but saying something like "Methodist them down" just wouldn't have the same impact.

If a Jew said something derogatory about blacks, she would be the first to complain. I am sick of 'black privilege'

I've heard of "chew them down" but never "Jew them down." I'd say it was a definite anti-Semitic slur.

Quite the conundrum. Black people by definition cannot be racist. On the other hand, as with The N Word, it's up to the community in question to call the tune on what's offensive and what's not.
