“There is clearly an epidemic that begs for an urgent response,” wrote Harvard’s Dr. David Christiani in the New England Journal of Medicine. The epidemic to which he refers is vaping, which is on the verge of being seen as a public health crisis. At the time of that writing, officials were investigating 450 possible cases of severe lung disease linked to vaping with five reported deaths around the country. (Snip) Even before a public-health concern arose, vaping had become a target of public-health reformers. In 2018, the FDA announced new measures “to address the epidemic of youth e-cigarette use.”

Just call it "recreational" vaping and problem solved.

Vaping - Bad Pot - Good. I don't get it.
You can buy vape liquid with zero nicotine. Inhaling pot from a joint. straight into the lungs has to damage the lungs, plus it messes with your brain. However you have politicians loving legalization of pot.

We are trying to ban tobacco, but at the same time legalize pot. What is wrong with this picture? Surprising how many vaping shops opened up in a short amount of time. Now we are seeing the consequences. Inhaling anything into your lungs other than air is probably a bad idea.

Yes, #5. Like most of my generation, I smoked pot on occasion back in the 70’s. My daughter did it in her late teens and early 20’s and once told me that there was no health risk in doing it. I told her to show me her pipe and I pointed to all of the brown gunk in the bowl and then said, “See that? If your pipe is full of that, what do you suppose is in your lungs?” I doubt that I was the one to change her mind, but she gave it up a few years ago. Air is good - everything else, not so much.

No matter how far medicine advances in this country, the young and stupid will find ways to foil it. Vaping, drinking, smoking, opioids, obesity, veganism, staring at the latest device-du-jour. It's all self-inflicted damage to mind and body.

Who would have thought that sucking on the by-product of burning leaves or a concoction of chemicals would cause lung problems in humans?

Not just smiling, #4, pulling the strings. Many vapers don't use nicotine at all, the highly advertised Blu/Juul products are strictly nic. The tobacco lobby is in bed with government, hoping to create and monopolize market and addiction.
These mysterious, alleged lung problems are coming from unregulated THC vape products. Like CBD products, THC/marijuana based providers are pushing dangerous, worthless and dishonest garbage. Finding legitimate, controlled products is not easy.
But yeah, the tobacco industry remains a powerful force and its customers' health is last on the list.

My son got hooked on cigarettes and began to vape to get away from the smell and, we hoped, smoking in general. When his mother and I asked him about the deaths, he was more informed and quite sanguine about the 'problem' pointing out it was marijuana related.
He was right.
Notice how no one cites the death toll from cigarettes in any of these hyperventilated cries for help?

It, like tobacco and opiods and all the other self-hurting acts are not the business of nanny government. How is this a cause for all of us, which is the far greater number, have to fork over our liberty? The government stuck its nose in the doctor patient relationship and took away the liberty of a treatment that help those who needed it. Each one of these "public health crisis" the government steps in and takes away our liberty in the name of doing good, where it is based on a very small number. In this case it has become a public health crisis based on less than a handful of cases against 330 million people who have lost some of their liberty. Its just another of nanny's grab that ever increases and never leaves.

I believe it is something to be deeply concerned about as an adult. An entire new generation of addicts is being created right before our eyes. The doctor is probably seeing many cases of toxic reactions to pot smoking and nicotine vaping.
For one thing, our lungs are not designed to inhale all that extra moisture. Another is, the toxins in Pot are actually causing a rise in ER visits for severe gastric distress brought on by smoking weed. Today's Pot is not the mild version that hippies enjoyed. It is very powerful by comparison. This is not the harmless habit that we are being told it is.

There are a lot of stupid ads on tv telling young people that vaping and smoking cigarettes is bad. BAD!!! There's not been a single ad yet telling (young) people that pot's smoking and vaping is illegal.

As an old goat, I don't understand much of modern day idiocy, from smoking anything, injecting anything, drinking anything, inventing new drug cocktails. Apparently none of these people really want a future. Darwin is smiling. Actually, am I.

I was suspicious of the vaping panic when I heard a doctor/official on Fox emoting about the vaping threat. She was practically sobbing. She spoke at length, giving some facts, but the one fact I couldn't get clear was how many of these health incidents were due to marijuana being vaped. It turns out it's most of them.
