A nation of smelt?

Most ichthyologists will tell you, smelt are small, oily fish that travel in large schools seemingly without leadership and sometimes I am given to wonder whether Canada isn’t a nation of smelt. As a not-so-proud citizen of Canada, I feel it necessary to apologize for the boorishness of the Government of Canada in general and Canadian voters in particular for kicking off an election on this day. As my friend Art Weinreb wrote in these pages, dropping the writ for a general election on the 18th anniversary of 9/11 amounts to a poke in the eye for Uncle Sam.

Why would good decent people line up behind Trudeau and at the peril of their way of life and the stability of their Nation?

A country of the descendants of US draft dodgers, French separatists, and high minded moralists who consume large amounts of Molson and weed is not a nation. It’s a fractured commune.

I live 12 miles from Canadian soil and I didn't have ANY idea they were having an election. I like them and all, but they are pretty much irrelevant to me... No need to apologize.

Personally, I don't give a hoot what some other country does, as long as they don't bother me. There are too many jerks in the world to worry about any specific ones.

Trudeau Decides Election Campaign

For the benefit of our American readers, when and how elections are held in Canada differ from those held in the United States. Although not necessary, Canada has legislated fixed election dates, the next one scheduled to be held on Oct. 21 of this year. Although not written in stone, the government is keeping with the date fixed by statute. While the campaign has been going on unofficially for weeks, certain things must be done in order for the official campaign period to begin. The Prime Minister must visit the Governor General and ask her to dissolve Parliament in order to begin the formal election period.

We remember where we were that day. What we saw and heard that day. And how we felt as the relentless cadence, played on an old drum carried by an Army Master Sergeant, tolled the deliberate steps of a funeral procession to the Arlington National Cemetery. Many of that generation remember how the three TV news outlets (ABC, NBC, CBS)—near replicates of each other—were quick to blame a far-right conservative culture in Dallas for

President Donald Trump needn’t have to have suggested sending Ilhan Omar back to the country of her birth. Omar’s already in Somalia, if not physically, there in heart and fiery spirit. Trump has called out members of the so-called “Squad” who continue to work feverishly in radicalizing America. But that was yesterday’s Trump/Squad controversy. Today Omar—sworn in to Congress on a copy of her grandfather’s Quran—is publicly calling for protection of a Somali company—Hormuud Telecom—that actively funds Al Shabaab in Somalia, an offshoot of Al Qaeda, Omar’s updated version of “some people did something” in reference to 9/11. And still the media, including excellent ones like Judicial Watch, refer

We are lied to, deceived, and manipulated constantly to believe what isn’t so. Any weakness will declare itself quickly. Our country is being dismantled, systematically, methodically. It has been going on for a long time, with patience and stealth, since at least the sixties and it is happening from within. Almost everything the Left needs to finish is now

The United Nations General Assembly mandate for the scandal-ridden United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is coming up for renewal shortly. The renewal request should be denied. Aside from the financial scandals reaching the very top echelons of UNRWA’s leadership, UNRWA has become no more than a tool serving the Palestinian leadership’s relentless drive to liquidate the Jewish state of Israel. UNRWA claims that it “has contributed to the welfare and human development of four generations of Palestine refugees,” leading the agency to make insatiable demands for more and more money contributed by

Early Monday morning, Donald Trump tweeted: “94% Approval Rating in the Republican Party, a record. Thank you!” Where the president got this specific number remains a mystery. Recent polls by YouGov put his GOP approval roughly ten points lower, and Gallup, which has tracked Trump’s popularity since he took office, puts him at 88 percent. But I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised that Trump used his Sharpie to round up his score. He’s deeply invested in being — or at least claiming to be — the most popular Republican president in history.

This is the time for President Trump to deprive his enemies of the last weapon that could be employed against him that could cause him any harm: the largely false, but still troublesome, issue of his personality and routine behavior. Other lines of attack have come to naught: Collusion with Russia, accusations of racism provoking outbursts of mass murder (by uttering “racially charged statements,” in the inadvertently Orwellian words of CNN’s most witless talking head, Don Lemon), the verbal recession confected by the world-renowned economists of CNN and MSNBC, all of it has collapsed. AUSTIN— Twenty-two Greenpeace USA activists created a blockade on the Fred Hartman Bridge in Baytown, Texas early Thursday ahead of the third Democratic primary debate in Houston. Eleven of those climbers are dangling over the side of the bridge, an activist said in a Facebook Live video. The climbers held colorful ribbons and streamers to block traffic under the bridge. The group aims to “shut down the largest oil export channel in the U.S.” for 24 hours. Law enforcement officials told the local NBC affiliate that Houston Ship Channel was temporarily closed down because the protesters threatened to lower themselves to stop ship traffic.

In the most contentious Democratic debate thus far, a winnowed field of 10 Democratic candidates took the stage in Houston Thursday night and sparred over hot-button issues such as health care and immigration. Notably, this was the first time that frontrunners Sen. Elizabeth Warren and former Vice President Joe Biden shared the debate stage. Warren and Biden exhibited stark differences on style, policy and vision for the Democratic Party, embodying two opposing theories of what the party should be.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg ought to crack open the Bible, turn to Psalm 139, and read how God formed humans “fearfully and wonderfully” — and after, take a second look at his views on abortion and repent, said his brother-in-law, Rhyan Glezman, an evangelical pastor from Michigan, on Fox News. Good advice. It is a curiosity how a self-declaring Christian can still stand strong on the side of abortion rights. This is what Buttigieg said a few days ago on a “Breakfast Club” radio interview: “Right now, [conservatives] hold everybody in line with this one piece of doctrine about abortion, which is obviously a tough issue

To date, five congressmen from Texas have resigned instead of seeking re-election in 2020. Their resignations signal two things from GOP leadership. The first is the realization that Texas is now lost. The second is that this loss is due entirely to the changing demographics resulting from legal and illegal immigration. The five congressmen that have resigned are Bill Flores (17th), Will Hurd (23rd), Pete Olson (22nd), Kenny Marchant (24th), and Mike Conaway (11th). Of these five, Congressman Conaway is unique in that his district will likely remain red for some time. He has not faced an opponent in numerous election cycles.

When we’re faced with threats of inundation, our reaction has traditionally been to build walls. Sea-level rises, storms and floods have been held back with solid barriers, seawalls and dykes. We have used walls to keep out people, too: the fact that this has failed throughout the ages has not stopped its recent revival in the United States. The climate crisis threatens global sea-level rises of well over half a metre if we fail to act, while tidal storm surges will reach many times that height. Fiercer and more frequent hurricanes will batter us, and millions of people who live in areas where crops have failed
