Door blows out during ground
test on Boeing 777X jet

Boeing’s new widebody jet, the 777X, suffered a setback Thursday afternoon during a high-pressure stress test on the ground when one of the airplane’s doors exploded outward. One 777X employee working in a nearby bay at Boeing’s Everett plant said he heard “a loud boom and the ground shook.” The accident happened to what’s called the “static test airplane,” one of the two airplanes in any new jet program that are built for ground testing only and will never fly. It was during the final test that must be passed as part of the airplane’s certification by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

"Former Boeing Engineer Dr. Todd Curtis runs Airsafe.com and said this doesn't happen often. 'I've never heard of a case where a door popped off like this during a stress test before,' he said. 'Doesn't mean it hasn't happened before, I'm just not aware of it.'" https://komonews.com/news/local/door-blows-off-boeing-777x-during-stress-test

This is why they do testing. The test showed a problem, Boeing will fix it. Hardly worth a headline.

When you design for lightest weight, you necessarily cut down the engineering margins, typically to 15% or 40%. But, if we always got everything perfect, no need to test. This is exactly why we build test articles and usually test them to destruction. The fuselage sections were built by Mitsubishi (aft) and Kawasaki (forward), so it will be interesting to see what went wrong, design or manufacturing? Also, this says "cargo door" which is the usual term for a much larger than normal door only used on the freighter version of the aircraft, which AFAIK has not been built previously. All the 777s I have seen were passenger only versions, no cargo doors, so it may be a new door design, perhaps done by the fuselage contractor, either Mitsubishi or Kawasaki, rather than Boeing engineering. That is not clear at this point.

Brooklyn—A United Federation of Teachers director has been charged with attempting to coerce a minor into sex as part of a sting operation, according to a complaint filed in Brooklyn Federal Court Friday. According to a statement by Detective Damon Gergar, who was involved in the sting, 41-year-old Jason Seto contacted him via a dating app that Gergar says people "primarily use to meet up to have sexual contact." Washington—The White House is considering a plan that would keep most refugees who are fleeing war, persecution and famine out of the United States, significantly cutting back a decades-old program, according to current and former administration officials. One option that top officials are weighing would cut refugee admissions by half or more, to 10,000 to 15,000 people, but reserve most of those spots for people from a few countries or from groups with special status, such as Iraqis and Afghans who work alongside American troops, diplomats and intelligence operatives abroad. Another option, proposed by a top administration official, would reduce refugee

Oakland Raiders wide receiver Antonio Brown threatened violence against his team's general manager, and the team is doing nothing about it. On Wednesday, Brown had a heated exchange with Raiders GM Mike Mayock where he unleashed a barrage of foul language and went as far as threatening to punch Mayock in the face. The exchange came because Mayock was unhappy that Brown had posted a part of a letter the GM sent him on social media. The letter had to do with the $54,000 the team fined him for a pair of unexcused absences from practice during training camp.

Sen. Edward Markey expressed worries Thursday that Amazon’s video doorbell Ring and its partnership with law enforcement could lead to increased racial profiling, particularly with people of color. Mr. Markey wrote a letter to Amazon’s chief executive saying he was “alarmed to learn that Ring is pursuing facial recognition technology” and offering police departments access to Rekognition, their face-matching program. The Massachusetts Democrat added the technology raises “serious privacy and civil liberties concern” that “could easily create a surveillance network that places dangerous burdens on people of color” in areas where Ring has partnered with police officials. The 30-foot (9-meter) steel fence will be built along the Colorado River in a section of border that had a big increase in migrant families earlier this year, but slowed to a trickle in recent weeks. The exact details of the project are unclear, but it appears it will consist of about 5 miles of fencing.(Snip) In New Mexico, crews are building barriers

Donald Trump wants people to think he’s a winner. So why does he act like a loser? Winners convey a sense of effortless superiority. They don’t have to work at it. You just know they’re above it all. If someone tries to criticize them, it’s beneath their dignity to worry about it. It’s just a little speck they brush off their shoulder. The Brits are good at that, Boris Johnson especially. We still don’t know how things will turn out there, but I expect his aplomb will carry him through. “There are no disasters,” he once joked. “Only opportunities. And, indeed, opportunities for fresh disasters.”
