There is a concerning rise in the number of college students being affects by depression in the United States and social media addiction could be a reason for it, according to a study.
According to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 16 million American adults are affected by depression every year. In other words, one in every six adults may suffer from this mental disorder at some point in their life. The agency also stated that more than eight percent adults aged 20 and above in the country were affected by depression during the years 2013 to 2016

Social media was coming to light when our kids were in elementary school. We kept them off it as long as we could and just this week our oldest son expressed how grateful he was for not being able to have a smart phone during high school, he said it would have destroyed him.
The social media companies have ruined reality. They offer a false narrative in a post or picture and rank them by "likes", so if others don't "like" a thought or picture the person posting feel rejected, and if parents are there to explain reality and put it into perspective, the kid is dismayed. I hate (and yes I mean hate) social media.

I have difficulty accepting that youth depression rates during major wars, including those fought in our own land, were lower than those of today.

#2, you must remember that during the times you speak of, there were no social media to make depression the fad it is today. No tv, no magazines that catered to Hollywood and liberals and no radios to talk about it. People just sucked it up and went on living.

The youngsters are continually blasted with doom and gloom. Consider all the negativity from the media, professors, democrats, climate change charlatans, and sexually confused peers!

Too many of today’s children live in a world without behavioral boundaries. Parents have relinquished their child rearing responsibilities to the easier alternative of phones and tablets. Texting certainly is expedient but nuance is absent. A hand clasp, a hug or meaningful eye contact is lost. Small wonder there are feelings of isolation and loneliness.

More likely it is college students being mentally beaten into submission by radical leftist on campus.

This has little to do with social media. When I was growing up, most people believed that there was more to life than the material world to the point that our society was permeated with an awareness of the spiritual world. In fact, our society was still permeated with a sense of being Christian. Today, that is no longer true of society at large. The idea which permeates our society is that the material world is all that there is. For many people, life is too hard to be worth the effort if the material world is all that there is and death is seen as a way out.

Single word answer, Yes. All of us have children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews who seem to have their eyes glued to some "device" and can't be bothered to even say "hello" when you walk in the door. Those parents concerned enough to ask them to put the devices down to talk to their visitors become visibly annoyed and pick them back up within minutes. Some time on the computer every day can provide one with all the news, weather and entertainment necessary but all day long? The vast majority of the children's viewing is of vulgar, profanity-laced videos provided by teenage idiots. The only good thing coming from this situation is that it provides a very effective means of punishment when the device is taken away for a period of time. They REALLY suffer.

Oh horse droppings! Social media hasn't a thing to do with it. Think! From the moment a white male is born, he is the the cause of all the evil in the world. Wome and men are not held accountable for anything. Its how they feel or if they think they are some other sex trapped in a opposite sex's body. Oh, and don't forget there isn' ta disaster yet conceived that man not only created, but has no future cause we are all gonna die in the next ten years. Decades of Democrat hatred of white males, decades of global warming BS and decades of no responsiblity, accountability or recognition of accomplishments (other than a participation trophy) have taken its toll. Its a miracle, given the no future story the Dems tell that all kids haven't committed suicide yet.
