A college student who was interning in Washington, DC, for the summer was fatally stabbed in an apparent random attack on Tuesday, police and reports said. Margery Magill, 27, was walking a dog that she was looking after on Irving Street in the Northwest section of the city just before 9 p.m. when Eliyas Aregahegne, 24, allegedly knifed her to death, NBC Washington reported. Police and medics responded and rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she died, DC cops said. Cops arrested Aregahegne for the killing on Wednesday and charged him with first degree murder, authorities said. Police said Wednesday they believe

This is terrible and one hates to inject politics into a horrible event, but this does beg the question: "Will there now be a flood of outrage from the left and a call to ban knives?" Prayers for the young lady's family

She was killed in NE Washington, not NW as stated in the opening paragraph. One needs to be careful anywhere in DC but NE Washington, east of Catholic U is not a safe area.

#3 reminds me of taking my daughter to tour Catholic U. After a welcoming meeting, the potential applicants were taken and we parents remained. I couldn't believe my ears. They said it was best for students never to go to even the parking lot alone. They openly cautioned that the surrounding areas were sketchy. Parents were told to come back in a couple of hours so I drove to see D.C. monuments. Driving back to the U was hellish, as I was unfamiliar with the one-way streets and couldn't find my way. The environs were so scary. The application was promptly torn up.

Eliyas Aregahegne?
Where have I heard that name before? Didn't someone by that name come over on the Mayflower? Yes - - yes, that's it - - a namesake was on the Mayflower. Yes - - the Aregahegnes are an old-time, solid American family.

Fifty years ago I was part of a group touring the several military command centers in the US. As there are several in the DC area we spent a few days there and stayed in a nice but not luxury hotel which was not in a seedy area. During our orientation we were advised to travel at night in groups of no less than two, but three or more was preferred. A significant majority of our all male group were very fit combat vets. Did I mention this was fifty years ago? Democrat leadership? is a thing of wonder in the way it never ever improves.

I lived in D.C. for a year or so in my 20s. Walking from the subway to my rented room after dark terrified me. I moved to a safer area in Northern Virginia as soon as I could afford it, and never looked back.

Eliyas Aregahgne is an Ethiopian name. Is this perp a Muslim refugee? The fact that so little is said about him leads me to believe that he is.

good instincts #8, and EXCELLENT move. (Literal move). DC has been unsafe off of the mall by much, esp to the NW forever. There used to be a place 1/2 block off the mall where there were literally burned out buildings 1/2 a block NW of the NW corner of the main part of the DC Mall. A block towards the Capitol from the Nat History Museum and go left half a block. Stayed that way for at least two years that I know of.
Very bad city.

Terrible and useless tragedy. Atlanta, Chicago, Orlando, Miami, Tampa, New Orleans, St. Louis, Baltimore, New York, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Oakland and many other American cities all suffer the same dangers and all for the same reason. Yes, it's a pattern.
