A speaker at the Democratic National Committee summer meeting Friday said if free health care is labeled "socialism" by Republicans, then they should "acknowledge that the Bible must then promote socialism.""When we embrace moral language, we must ask does our policy care for the least of these? Does it lift up those who are most marginalized and dejected in our society? Does it establish justice? That is the moral question," said Rev. William Barber,

Somebody ask Barber if the Bible endorses infanticide like the Democrat Party does.

Socialism is NOT endorsed by Jesus... His New Covenant makes it very clear, "If any one will not work. neither let him eat." 2 Thessalonians 3:10. Paul went on to say that those who refuse to do such are busybodies and should be disciplined by the local church in vs. 14-15. Now, we read of the church coming to the aid of brethren and individual Christians coming to the aid of the poor and needy... but, my responsibility in the human race is to work with my hand to earn a living, 1 Thessalonians 4:10-12. No where in the Scriptures did Jesus commission government to forcibly control the lives of the citizen through socialistic means... and I mean, no where!

The Bible is not a book about social justice. It is a book about God redeeming fallen humanity. "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world."

The first Jamestown colony was founded on the very Christian principles that Rev. Barber quotes so passionately. Everyone would share everything and it would all be free. Unfortunately, because human nature always trumps moral edict, many of the people decided not to work to contribute to the harvest and spent their time in other pursuits. In a season or two the entire colony nearly starved from low productivity because the people that did work resented the people who didn't and withheld their labor or hid their surplus from the community so they could feed their own family. When they finally decided to go back to private property rights and let people keep the fruits of their labor the colony thrived again. The people who didn't work didn't eat.
This is the same process that occurs in socialist countries today. The entire population is turned into criminals who must rely on the black market to survive because it is the only pragmatic way to distribute wealth. How many failed examples in history does it take for these people to learn this basic lesson?

What idiot believes that the Bible places an endorsement on anyone or anything. Ludicrous! Also you cannot break any of the ten commandments; but you can break yourself upon them. These people are trying to create God in their own image.

The bible does not endorse taking from others by force and giving it to your friends.

I guess they never read Jesus' comment on spreading the wealth when He said, "The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have Me."

Early on the pilgrims actually tried a system for generating food for families. It started with everyone taking an equal share of what they had worked to produce. True to form, several decided why pitch in with work if they would get their ration. The system, basic socialism, was scrapped in favor of producing your own and selling to each other for profit. Income and food and off they went.

The way I read it was that Jesus counselled the rich to help the poor because it was better for THEM to cultivate an open and generous soul rather than a grasping one. I don't recall him ever saying "Send out the Centurions to seize the wealth of the rich and bring it to a central place where the smug and superior special people will decide who is deserving of the money"

Talk about being a wacko. No wonder people leave places of worship by the droves. Who wants to listen to their revisionist claptrap.

I suggest that they spend some time reading and meditating on the Ten Commandments Exodus 20 and re-iterated in Deuteronomy 5 (the Book from the Torah from which Jesus cited more passages from any other Book of the Older Testament). Thou shalt not kill, for example... the Hebrew word is the one which means MURDER (including as Comment #1 says, infanticide, the murder of a baby).
Thou shalt not steal... that is, you shall not take what does not belong to you. So, whether socialists like it or not, what belongs to someone else doesn't belong to the government (except what is required, but by Consent of the Governed in our Republic). Overarching the Commandments dealing with social interaction is the Command against covetousness: don't even desire what belongs to someone else... and don't fall for the lies of socialists who tell you that you deserve what belongs to someone else, whether a spouse or property or anything else. So you always end up with a strong-arm government to enforce the confiscation of what belongs to others
Scriptural precepts concern first of all the relationship between us and the Creator God, and then between us and our fellow human beings. Socialists who try to use Scripture, forget that first precept, and it's why (I think) they always make the State their all-powerful god.

The "Reverend" is delusional. General welfare has nothing to do with financial support or confiscation of wealth, but refers to well-being in regard to safety, morals, military and police protection, etc.

When lie-berals -- who hate everything that Christianity stands for -- start trying to use the Bible to justify their evil, it just makes them that much more evil!!!!
It also makes them sound really, really stupid!!!

Socialism doesn't have the face of God. Socialism makes a god of government. Being a slave to Christ is done by free will. Being a slave to the government is slavery.

To Liberals, the Constitution means what they want it to mean. Now the Bible might as well be the Vedas. If it suited them, 'Hunt for Red October' was really a book about Socialism in America.
These people will say, print, or doing anything, justifying it by claiming it was advocated by whatever Authority they deem useful, regardless of whether that Authority actually says something else.
It's why public schools do so little educating. An informed electorate is anathema to them.

Jesus never forced others to pay for that lepers medical care either.
God also refuses to help those that refuse to help themselves thus seems to me the socialist ones that want to live off the government and someones else's wallet or purse are the morally bankrupt sinners.
And that “promote the general welfare" argument has gotten so old it is covered mold, it is for well-being of the nation as a whole not a mandate provide subsistence to politically favored groups because of a particular background or socioeconomic status.

The brand of Socialism at work around the world today has nothing to do with helping your fellow man. It is all about murderous totalitarian government forcing their subjects into slavery for the "good" of the state, the "state" being the corrupt and abusive leadership.

The answer to that premise is "Even Satan can quote the Bible"
My uncle, the bishop, once told me that one can "prove" or "disprove" anything by quoting the Bible, just by using single verses taken out of context.

Had Jamestown practiced true socialism, every one would have been forced to work. As is typical with Utopian ideas, they failed to take into account human nature.
