President Trump suggested Democrats have given up any defense of the Second Amendment and pledged that he will not allow Americans’ gun rights to be swept away on the “slippery slope” of gun control.
Trump made the comments while speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday.
He said, “We have very, very strong background checks right now. But we have, sort of, missing areas and areas that don’t complete the whole circle. And we’re looking at different things.”
He added, “And I have to tell you that it is a mental problem. And I’ve said it a hundred times: It’s not the gun that pulls the trigger

Democrats who want gun control must know that US is #1 supplier of weapons to the world. If Democrats don't want Americans to have guns, why don't they demand that US stop supplying the rest of the world with guns? It makes no sense to arm everyone except Americans.

In the end nothing will change. Perhaps that is for the best. Just hope I never cross paths with one of these nutters when they go off.

It looks like the NRA has declared ANOTHER big fund-raising emergency for nothing. I detest their Chicken Little reactions. Every time some weasel of a democrat says they are coming after our guns, the big donation envelopes arrive in the mail. The 2nd Amendment is a self-protecting device. Only if we aren't courageous enough to keep our weapons will we lose them.

Trump was playing the msm and the rest of the dems. He was never going to do anything to go against the 2nd amendment. Our faith in him is well placed. Unlike others, he will not sell out America or the American people.

Exactly #5. Trump plays the l o n g game and is the ultimate troll to the msm. He also knows the Dems and the Repubs will never agree on anything long enough to create a bill, then there would be too much other 'junk' in it that he'd never sign it.
I love our POTUS and pray for him and his family at least every night and every time I think of it during the day.

The first thing that a would be tyrannical government will do, if it looks like the people may revolt, is to take away their weapons. This is what the British Government was trying to do when they sent a detachment of "Red Coats" to Concord and Lexington in 1775. Ever mindful of the fact that the government they were establishing could someday become tyrannical, the founding fathers included the Second Amendment to the Constitution.

I don't know what "long game" Trump is playing with the left but he sure is playing hell with large portions of his base. I suspect that, as seems to be quite common with Trump, he popped off in reaction to events and the immediate coverage that the leftist media gave them without much thought as to what he was saying. Then he gets a rapid and undoubtedly quite pointed reaction from his base and he moves back to reality. I suspect that if Trump were presented with a bill declaring universal background checks and red flag laws he would sign it with the same reluctance he has signed off on all the continuing resolutions that have granted the leftists just about everything their hearts desire (not to mention pushing the debt to yet another record high).
That Trump is the best we can hope for is cause for despair, not triumph.

Thank goodness.
I wrote the White House on this issue, and was clear, cogent and respectful, asking the President not to sacrifice our critical 2nd Amendment rights for some temporarily hysterical media push.
"Universal background checks" is total gun registration, so that they can come and collect them at some later time. It is just that simple. If we cannot sell guns legally without the government tracking them, then they will know who has them and that is exactly the same thing as "registration", which is, under current federal law, illegal.

Given the past perfidy of Republican presidents and congress critters, its understandable that conservative alarm bells go off when President Trump is willing to talk about hot issues like Red Flag warnings and "enhanced" background checks. However ingrained and valid this reaction is; it is not valid with regards to Donald Trump. Our president is always willing to talk about "X" issue using the Dim code words, which they also interpret under the old Uniparty paradigm as signaling surrender on the subject. They sit back and relax, thinking they now own the issue, until PDT's thumbs begin to Twitter.
A good case study is DACA. When Trump invited Pelosi and Schumer to the White House he laid out his agenda in easy-to-understand language. They balked and grandstanded. They were painfully plain in describing their vision for America and were soundly rejected by public opinion. We don't hear much about the "dreamers" anymore. A classic Trumpian win.
MAGA - Trust Trump. He's not you're average president, Dim or Repub.

How much plainer can PDT put it than, “And I have to tell you that it is a mental problem. And I’ve said it a hundred times: It’s not the gun that pulls the trigger”. It seems like people can discern the difference between cars killing people, knives killing people, or any other method of killing which takes a person to perform it, but they will continue to put the gun as the killer. What if the government declared cars and trucks to be banned because of their potential to kill? Also, note that cities with high gun control, like Chicago, continue to have high murder rates, because criminals do not obey laws. President Trump listens to all sides, but is wise enough to pick the constitutional way.

Fill in the "missing areas" of background checks and you have the election, President Trump. But do something to assuage many worried voters.

Just remember when they, the Democrats are going after the NRA they are really going after anyone who supports the second amendment and the freedom to own and carry a gun for protection of self, family and friends. After all the NRA is powerless without the folks who stand for personal freedomm

I agree with #5. POTUS was just luring them out to get them to state what they are really wanting, knowing that gun control is a demonstrably consistent losing issue.
Trigger alert!
I'm old enough to remember the old Uncle Remus story about how Brer Rabbit pleaded with Brer Fox to not throw him into the briar patch. Of course Brer Fox could not resist doing so, and Brer Rabbit made his escape.
The left just threw the rabbit into the briar patch. Again. Heh heh.
