The number of acres burned in California through the beginning of August 2019 is 26 times less than the number of acres burned at the same point in 2018, according to new statistics from Cal Fire. Through August 11 of this year, 23,748 acres of California land not controlled by the federal government had burned. At the same point last year, 618,996 acres had burned. Though to be fair, Scott McLean, a fire captain with Cal Fire, said 2018 was a record year for acreage burned in California at 1.8 million acres burned by wildfires. But even compared to an average year, the number of acres burned in 2019 is still over

Perhaps the uncontrolled fires of last year mitigate new ones this year? Is controlled burning being done in CA?

Are they disappointed? Seriously, this notion of handcapping fires is a new idea. Many things factor into a high fire season including very heavy rains in winter and spring months that cause the grasses to grow more heavily. Then a hot dry condition dries them and they become tinder. The heat we’ve been having has been fairly humid, and we did not have terribly heavy rains… Many factors. No reporter will bother to go below the surface...

Belated PS. Then the Santa Ana winds come. Hot and dry - used to be called Devil Winds. Everyone can relax. We’re fine. It is gorgeous here. Hot but bearable interspersed with 80ish temps. Cool at night in 60s or low 70s. Summer. Everything looks pretty now that the drought panic has eased.

Same thing in Washingtons state. All winter and spring we've been warned by the 'experts' that the fires would be really bad this summer. We are in a 'drought', at least that's what they keep telling us. But this has been one of the wetter and cooler springs and summer. We had a lot of snow last January and February, especially in the mountains. So far, not many fires and I don't believe any of them have been forests but grasslands in Eastern Washington and those have been started by lightning that occurred during thunderstorms.

Can't reburn all that acreage again so soon, is at least a part of it. A LOT of "at risk" land was removed from the "possible to burn" list.

There is a section of Sequoia National Forest that consists of 95% dead trees - killed by bark beetles - in Kern and Tulare counties. This section has been waiting to go up since the drought ended three years ago. It hasn't lit off yet, but when it does, that section of the sierras will become a burning ember!

A Crockett man is accused of robbing a bank Friday to pay for a wedding ring and the venue for the wedding, a Texas sheriff said. He was going to be married Saturday. But Heath Edward Bumpous was in custody over the weekend after his fiancee recognized his photograph posted on a law enforcement Facebook page. The photo was from a bank surveillance camera and Texas authorities had asked for help to identify the bank robber. Bumpous’ fiancee convinced him to surrender, and authorities arrested the suspect about two hours after the Friday morning holdup.

The Air Force has begun to look at whether there’s increased risk for prostate cancer among its fighter pilots. A new investigation by McClatchy shows just how serious the problem may be. The fighter pilot study was requested by Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein after he was contacted by concerned veterans service organizations in 2018, according to the report obtained by McClatchy. At the heart of the Air Force study was a question of whether extended exposure in the cockpit to radiation may be linked to increased risk of prostate cancer.

Everyone can relax, the mystery of the Queens In-N-Out burger may have been solved. On Sunday, a man living in the Queens borough of New York City discovered a perfectly wrapped and seemingly untouched In-N-Out burger sitting in the middle of the street. This stood out to him because there are no In-N-Out locations within 1,500 miles of New York City. “It genuinely shook me to my core,” Lincoln Boehm, 31, initially told the New York Post. Boehm, originally from Santa Monica, Calif., said he and his wife were heading to a McDonald’s before catching their train at the Jamaica Long Island Railroad station when they found the burger.

Unless, of course, he did nothing to block their agenda, in which case he’d be left alone like all the other cowardly roll-over Republicans. The American people chose a barbarian for president because they knew only a barbarian could drain the Washington swamp. Republicans have questioned, and continue to question, whether the Obama intelligence community used foreigners -- from Australia, Italy and the United Kingdom -- to spy on the Trump campaign. Did they outsource spying, in other words. That is part of what Connecticut Attorney General John Durham is investigating, at the request of Attorney General William Barr. But in a very sympathetic interview with former CIA Director John Brennan, NBC's Chuck Todd never asked difficult questions about the origins of the Trump-Russia investigation and Brennan's possible role in it.
