The Promise and Pitfalls of
Universal Background Checks

Original Article

Much as we did after Sandy Hook, we find ourselves debating background checks in the wake of killings that would not have been prevented by one. More than 60,000 Americans died by gun homicide between 2013 and 2017, but our attention is drawn only to the rarest, most spectacular, and most unusual incidents, those where a half-day or so’s worth of fatalities happen all in one place — and in those, it is usually the case that the deranged killer bought his guns legally or took them from someone else who did. But then again, now is as good a time as any to talk about measures

In 2013, number and percentage of murder arrests by race were: Black or African Americans 4,379 = 51.3% (13% of population) White Americans (non-Hispanic Americans) 2,861 = 33.5% (64% of population) Hispanic Americans 1,096 = 12.8% (16% of population) American Indians or Alaska Natives 98 = 1.14% Asian Americans 101 = 1.18%[52][53] Why is it not reasonable to legally forbid Blacks owning guns?

The only reason for “universal background checks” is that, i order to work, all firearms in private hands would have to be registered. It’s a back door to registration and then confiscations. Period.

Republicans shouldn't even be discussing this with the gun grabbing democrats. Read the last part of the article. When the feds start to dabble in registration of personal firearms the next move is confiscation plus the cost to enforce and store the data. Bigger government and not one life is saved. Ban and register bad people.

Absolutely NOT. The intent of this is to have a permanent, centralized record of who owns every single gun in this country, with the CLEAR INTENT that this will eventually be used to round up all guns and disarm us, always the first step to tyranny. No to government control of weapons. No, NO, NO. There MUST be large numbers of guns freely sold without government interference to keep the government in check, and unable to account for enough private guns to disarm us. A terrible idea that the antigun, totalitarian left is wedded to, because they want to confiscate them ALL.

You are wasting your time, #2. Democrats and liberals are totally deaf when it comes to data and facts. The one that drives me up a wall is this: the FBI crime data base says there are around 12-15,000 murders per year, of which about 500 are the result of someone using a rifle/shotgun (or, as the lame stream media like to say, a "long gun", which makes real firearm owners envision a musket from the 1700s). Note 500 murders using ANY type of rifle/shotgun: not just an "assault" rifle. Yet any time there is a "mass" shooting (generally defined by 4 or more victims in a single incident) the pols instantly want to ban assault rifles. When you ask them what's an assault rifle, they either mislabel semi-automatic weapons as automatic or, more likely, they resort to descriptions of military style weapon characteristics -i.e., a bayonet lug, an adjustable stock, a muzzle brake, a vertical grip, or a high capacity magazine. Some even will say "those black rifles." There is nothing like being governed by people who have no idea about what they are attempting to legislate/control. Meanwhile, anti-gunners have managed to bastardize the real reason for the 2nd Amendment, which any reading of the authors' positions on the amendment at the time of its writing will reveal the real reason was not to ensure a trained militia or personal protection or hunting, but was to insure a tyrannical government could not enslave the people without them resisting. Don't fall for the gun grab, folks: as trite as it may seem, if it happens, only criminals and elitists will have firearms.

ALBANY — Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his fellow anti-vaxxers flooded an Albany courtroom Wednesday as they implored a judge to overturn a state law barring kids who haven’t been vaccinated from attending school. Hundreds of white-clad supporters later descended on the Capitol to leave photos of their children outside Gov. Cuomo’s office in an attempt to draw the governor’s attention to thousands who will be affected. Rita Palma, the founder of a group called My Kids, My Choice, said new law, which ended an exception for kids whose parents objected to vaccines on religious grounds, will keep 26,000 children out of school and daycare. “I want him to hear us out,”

An Internal Revenue Service analyst pleaded guilty Wednesday to illegally disclosing sensitive financial records about President Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen, in a leak case stemming from the Justice Department’s investigations of those close to the president. John Fry, who had worked as an investigative analyst with the IRS in San Francisco, entered his plea in federal court there. Fry was charged in February with the unauthorized disclosure of suspicious activity reports, or SARs. Such reports are meant to flag potentially unlawful financial conduct to government investigators but do not necessarily indicate wrongdoing. Fry pleaded guilty to one count. He is scheduled to be sentenced in December. The crime carries

Police sources identified the gunman in a standoff at a Tioga apartment building that left six police officers injured as Maurice Hill, 36, a Philadelphia man with a lengthy history of gun convictions and of resisting attempts to bring him to justice. The police sources declined to be identified because they were not authorized to speak. Reached by phone about 9:30 p.m. Thursday evening, Shaka Johnson, the lawyer who most recently represented Hill, confirmed that Hill had a connection to the standoff. “My client is requesting me to come to the scene,” he said. The standoff began Wednesday about 4:30 p.m. when a Narcotics Strike Force unit attempted to serve a search warrant

At 169 feet tall, Verrückt was the tallest waterslide in the world. Riders plummeted down the nearly vertical 17-story chute—taller than Niagara Falls—at speeds up to 70 miles per hour. German for “insane,” Verrückt was designed to challenge the laws of physics. Visitors flocked to Schlitterbahn Water Park in Kansas City, Kansas, to experience its thrill. That is, until August 7, 2016, when the raft that 10-year-old Caleb Schwab was riding went airborne and hit a metal pole supporting a safety net, resulting in his decapitation and instant death. Nathan Truesdell, a filmmaker from nearby Missouri, heard about the devastating incident on the news. “My first thought was that

Recently, a coalition of 75 organizations including Planned Parenthood, National LGBTQ Task Force, the ACLU, and the National Abortion Federation released a 116-page blueprint outlining a policy agenda aimed at advancing policies for women and children in the name of “sexual and reproductive health care, rights, and justice.” However, after reading over the policies, one quickly realizes that they would substantially harm American families without bringing forth "rights" or "justice." Parental rights, for example, are targeted for elimination. The coalition deemed parental consent for an abortion as detrimental to the empowerment of “girls and youth assigned female.” If the true goal of the coalition is to help empower young women,

Washington- I was traveling with candidate Trump during the 2016 campaign, and we spent a night at the Trump National Doral Miami. After multimillionaire sex offender Jeffrey Epstein’s dramatic death in a New York jail cell, both alleged victims and a curious public have turned their attention to the former financier’s only remaining close relative: his younger brother, Mark Epstein. A former artist turned real estate magnate, Mark raised eyebrows last month by offering up his Florida condo as collateral for his brother’s bail. While he has denied any connection to Jeffrey’s businesses, at least one of Mark’s properties has turned up repeatedly in sex trafficking suits against his older sibling. And his unexplained wealth—he claims to have semi-retired at age 39 and has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to charity—

Those who know her say that it’s possible she is as much of a Houdini as Epstein. Both of them liked having secrets, and the way those secrets kept people off balance. “Jeffrey always wanted to give the impression that he was an international man of mystery—‘I control everyone

Newly obtained documents confirm that James Comey’s FBI was running a secret and corrupt counterintelligence operation against the Trump campaign in the summer of 2016 and repeatedly deceiving the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) thereafter in order to wiretap a Trump campaign associate. The disclosure was the result of a federal lawsuit and a year of litigation. Despite efforts by FBI Director Christopher Wray to obstruct, a federal court issued an order that forced the FBI and Department of Justice to produce the records known as “302 reports.” They are a summary of interviews FBI agents conducted with Bruce Ohr, a top DOJ official.

When he entered the race (before he entered, in fact) he was savaged by the left as a fake progressive. They feared that Betomania would spread from Texas to the national Democratic electorate and usurp their dreams of a Bernie Sanders presidency, so they unloaded on him. That should have been a clue to him that he would never succeed in winning them over, in which case he’d be better off positioning himself as a center-left candidate aiming for moderates.
