AUBURNDALE (CBSMiami) — A Florida woman says an alligator ate her 100-pound dog.
Cynthia Robinson told investigators in Auburndale, located in Polk County near Lakeland, that she was walking her 6-year-old dog, Tank, by a retention pond on Thursday when the gator attacked.
Robinson says she took her dog off his leash to sit on a bench and the dog was running in and out of the water when the gator snatched it.

It's what alligators do. Floridians ought to know better. So, when did she move down from New York?

Now you know why there are very few stray dogs in Florida.

This is a sad event and I cannot understand why other commenters joke about it.

This is pretty common in gator country. I am surprised that this woman didn't know better. Maybe a Yankee transplant? Dogs are one of their favorite treats.

That's going to take a big gator. Back in the 60s, if dogs started disappearing around a lake, we knew a gator had moved in, they were pretty rare back then in central Fla. South Fla had a lot then, though.
Gators seem to like dogs. And the ones that were 2 and 3 ft long in 1970 are 10-12 ft long now, or more.

How awful! I feel horrible for her but worse for that poor dog. He’d still be alive if not for her stupidity. Kind of like the stupid people in my neighborhood that let their cats outside and small dogs alone in the yard...the coyotes will jump a 6 ft fence...and take your pets as snacks, all day, every day.

The first thing that I did after buying my house was to fence in the back yard. Not only do I have gators in the area, I have boars and coyotes. A pair of coyotes frequent my front yard.
The first thing you learn when living in the south.... beware bodies of water. If its not gators, its water moccasins. In the woods or brush, its rattlers.

I am sorry for the dog, and the woman's loss. But alligators have a remarkable appetite. Uncooked, fur, bones, head, and no complaints or preferences as to parts, cooking, or seasoning.

One look at the "body of water" ought to be enough to make one cautious, reedy, murky and a good place to lie in wait for the next meal.
As a dog owner myself, I feel sorry for the owner; she made some stupid decisions that day and will have to live with them. I know I'd be devastated.

It was only fair -- the dog ate the alligator's homework.

Which goes to show you that alligators have no taste buds (dog sucks).
Now it's a 100 pond bigger gator.
Did he have a chihuahua for an appetizer?

Alligators are a public nuisance and should be treated the same as rodents. I hate them. Keep them in Africa in the wild.

I don't know why God created alligators. They're only good for shoes and handbags.

Very sad. Maybe it's time to trap and eliminate some gators. As Florida builds on every acre available, they are invading on animal territory. Pick one: houses or wild animals.
