New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has ordered tall buildings to lay off the air conditioning in the face of an oncoming heatwave, in an attempt to preserve electricity in the city. In an emergency order issued on Thursday, de Blasio directed the owners of office buildings 100 feet or taller to keep the AC to 78F from Friday morning to Sunday evening. More than 200 million people in the eastern and central US are bracing for a dangerously warm weekend, with temperatures soaring as high as 110F.

He even admits he doesn't know if he has this power or not. It is going to be moot. Lots of companies in NYC take off Friday afternoons and weekends, when it is supposed to be hottest. Ignore this dictator-wannabe.

This comes after de Blasio's first effort...a text to the sun, asking it to reduce the hydrogen fusion for a few days.

Why don’t that just shut off the AC and open some windows? s/

But------what is DeBlasio going to set HIS a/c at? Not at 78! Take that to the bank! A/C for me, not for thee.

Heck , why not 87F? Really save energy.
Cortez would have you not be allowed to HAVE an AC unit, just a window fan, to be "green" (and sweaty).

ACCU Weather shows highs of 97 this weekend, followed by highs in the low to mid-80s next week. Sounds like a typical summer.

100 feet. No doubt, the buildings he will be spending time in top out at 99 feet. Also, don't expect Ms. Cortez to be in any tall buildings anytime soon.
Under what statute does he make this order? Is it lawful, or is it simply dictatorship?

Home office here in Dallas is currently a pleasant natural gas-fired powerplant 70deg....$0.08/kw makes it extremely bearable...keep telling our CA relatives that $0.50/kw is too much....

From another great meddling politician: Jimmy Carter's sweater plea. On February 2, 1977, the newly-inaugurated president appeared on television clad in a sweater, and asked us all to take a simple step to save energy. So should De Blazing ask everyone to put on a speedo?

It's what liberals get for not allowing the utility companies to build new infrastructure, while urban population booms. And of course, the tax write-off and subsidies for electric cars and buses dramatically increases their number draining the grid.

I'm under the heat wave and I keep my temperature at 78. Oddly, the hotter it is outside, the cooler I feel inside. Tuesday it's going to be 81 I am sure I will feel warm inside with the temperature at 78.

Where on earth does anyone live where they have to cool their houses to 72-70 degrees?
It has been anywhere from high 90s to mid 80s here and will be up in the 90s again next week. The thermostat will remain at 78. Now I have another reason to love the place where we live!

I am running into this at work. Its not the energy, its the equipment capacity. Once the chillers are removing all the heat they can, that's it. They lose the load and temperatures rise. Right now we are running at 95% capacity. If we should lose even one chiller for any reason, it will not go well. There is a shedding plan, but every office in the building is the most important one and must be maintained. Just ask them.

I'm no physicist, but I'm pretty sure that it is impossible to preserve electricity. Perhaps the reporterette meant 'conserve'.

It's a lot like being told to turn off the lights when you leave the room, to conserve electricity. The power company keeps right on producing it, whether you turn off that light bulb or not.
