The New York Times published an article detailing “How the Soviets Won the Space Race for Equality” Tuesday, highlighting how socialism allowed people of “the humblest origins” to become successful. The article, published under the “Past Tense” section, compared the “segregated United States” to the Soviet Union during the space race. While America put the first man on the moon, the Soviets sent the first man into space in 1961, before the U.S., and then sent “the first woman, the first Asian man, and the first black man into orbit – all years before the Americans would follow suit,” the article read.

What irresponsible drivel. Is the New York Times now the propaganda arm of the Russians? First they trash Independence Day, and now this. The soviets sent Valentina Tereshkova into space as a vile publicity stunt. She was poorly trained and was not allowed to do anything on her brief flight.

The Russians were so committed to gender diversity in the cosmonaut ranks that it took them 19 years to fly another woman in space. Of the 35 current active cosmonauts, exactly one is a woman. America has 18 active female astronauts.

Wow! I guess the author doesn’t know about mass ethnic cleansing in the Soviet Union—deportations of citizens based on ethnicity to Kazakhstan and elsewhere to rid the government of “troublesome” minorities. And those who dared to speak out ended up in labor camps. The Soviet Union was all about show for useful idiots like the New York Times while its people suffered.

The Russians sent up diverse people because they wanted the praises of commie rags like the NYT and they didn't care if the diverse cosmonauts made it or not. We still have no idea how many cosmonauts died.

Several years back, Africans were brought to Moscow to study at university. They weren't welcomed, so generally mistreated and shunned, they conspicuosly protested. Same thing happened in China. Cultire clash, generic racism, something didn't work out that's for sure.

the Times has always been in love with the CCCP, starting in the 30s.
The NYT is evil.

Diversity? BS. I traveled a couple of times in Russia with a very large black colleague. He was regularly asked to take selfies with Russians.....they had never seen a real, live black man before. It was embarrassing for him, but he tried to take it in good humor.

Eat dirt Slimes. If you love Russia so much, why don't you leave the country and join Pravda over there? Become one with your love.

The Soviets were committed to Diversity in the same way that that Rapinoe 'woman' is feminine.

Huh? Whut? The Soviets won the race foe equality by making
everyone but the politbureau members equally miserable. If you
were a rare, chess, athletic or musical talent and knew enough to
keep your mouth shut, you could eat regularly and live in the Capitol
city. If not, you did what you were told to do and made sure you did
not stick out enough to be noticed

Women and minorities? No wonder the Russians haven't made it to the moon yet.

Yep, the Soviets were equal opportunity providers of slave laborers to their Gulags. They were also equal opportunity starvers of Ukrainians. They were also equal opportunity slavers of citizens. The NYTimes didn't go far enough in the article. Next time, be thorough Times.

The US beat the Russians to the moon because of American ingenuity, drive for success, patriotism; I.e., all the things missing from the Soviet cesspool. That and the fact that our Germans were better than their Germans.

The Russian program may have given them diversity, but our space program gave our country unity.

Lord have mercy. If the Times were authentically committed to the principles of diversity and inclusivity, they would point out the failures and victories of both sides of the race. But they just counter one extreme with the other extreme, and in doing so give their readers (all three of them) a big helping of hypocritical hyperbole.
