It didn't say Rip Torn on his credit card, but that's how the world knew him. He was born Elmore Rual Torn, but he ended up going with the nickname Rip — like other men in his family. "They call me Rip: It's my family nickname," Torn told CBC's Midday in 1990, when asked about his unusual first name. "My dad was called Rip. I've got an Uncle Roland in Houston called Rip. I have a cousin Sam, he's called Rip. But I'm the only one in showbiz." Torn joked he only used the name Elmore in select circumstances

Another good one bites the dust. Character actor with fabulous range. I grew up with him all over my TV set. Don't miss the chance to watch 1979's Heartland, starring Mr. Torn....absolutely wonderful movie...one of my all-time favorites!!

He portrayed Judas quite skillfully in King of Kings. Sounds like he had some fun with his name. ''Elmore Torn'' on the marquee probably made Hollywood wince.

Well, here’s a clever whodunit from the Paper of Record. Whatever might be the cause of a sudden drop in border crossings? What could it possibly be?(Snip) To get the real answer, readers need to scroll down eight more paragraphs before the big reveal: “The United States policy to return people to Mexico and the pressure on Mexico to stop the migration are having a big impact,” said Daniel Bribiescas, an immigration lawyer in Tijuana. A new report on old records from the 1990s contradicts former President Bill Clinton's timeline of his relationship with alleged pedophile and child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. On Monday, Clinton released a statement condemning "the terrible crimes Jeffrey Epstein pleaded guilty to in Florida some years ago" and "those with which he has been recently charged in New York." Clinton's statement detailed his interactions with Epstein, which included multiple flights that he took with Epstein, "one meeting with Epstein in his Harlem office in 2002," (Snip) But according to a story published back in March 1995 by the Palm Beach

The U.S. National Women’s National Team (USWNT) used paper from their gender discrimination lawsuit as confetti during their victory parade in New York on Wednesday. At one point, goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris said “pay us bitch” as her teammate Allie Long chewed on a piece of the confetti. (Snip) pay gap is far from just “gender bias,” the reason there is a pay gap between the men and the women is that the men bring in many more fans, and millions of dollars more in revenue than the women’s soccer. The pay gap is about economics, not gender bias.

The Affordable Care Act, and the health coverage of millions of Americans, could face a major threat to its future. A federal appeals court in New Orleans appears ready to rule that a core provision of Obamacare is unconstitutional. It's unclear exactly when the appeals court will rule, but whichever side loses at this stage is almost certain to appeal to the Supreme Court, setting up a potential legal showdown in the middle of the 2020 presidential race. The Supreme Court previously ruled that the Affordable Care Act was constitutional because Congress has the power to tax people.

I suppose I should be thrilled that the U.S. Women's soccer team won its second world title but I confess to rooting for all their opponents during the games. I don't particularly care for soccer anyway but it was the purple-haired star player Megan Rapinoe who turned me off by spouting her disdain for any White House visit before she was even asked. Did she do that for publicity or was her Trump derangement too deeply entrenched?
