Late Monday night, NBC News published an “exclusive” revealing that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s great-great-grandfathers owned 14 slaves. The article ties the so-called revelation to McConnell’s opposition to reparations for the descendants of slaves.(Photo) NBC spent a great amount of time digging through century-old census records to trace McConnell’s history and find the slave owners.“The two great-great-grandfathers, James McConnell and Richard Daley, owned a total of at least 14 slaves in Limestone County, Alabama — all but two of them female, according to the county ‘Slave Schedules’ in the 1850 and 1860 censuses,” NBC reported.

And what of the descendants of black Africans who sold fellow black Africans to slavers? Shouldn't they be the ones paying reparations?

My gg grandfathers owned slaves. I am sorry they had a part in bringing them into the US. If we hadn’t imported slaves our crime, violence and welfare cost would certainly be a lot less.

The African black and muslim slave traders who captured and sold them in the first place are who should pay reparations, if anyone. See if you can track them down, NBC News.

No modern legal system holds people responsible for something done by their adult relatives, let alone long deceased ancestors. Someone cannot be held liable for their Father's delinquent taxes or debts. So, why would anybody think that an individual should be considered responsible for actions that took place in a past century by long dead relatives?

Slavery has been around since the beginning of time. Everyone everywhere probably has had a family member owning slaves or perhaps was a slave or both. All over the world for thousands of years the buying and selling of persons has taken place. African blacks selling their people to the British, the American Indians taking slaves after a battle with their fellow Indian tribes, and yes, blacks owned other blacks. Reparations for everyone! And by the way we do not hold current or future generations responsible for the sins of there long ago, dead relatives. We cannot judge the past by our current standards. It was recently reported that MLK Jr. didn't have a stellar private life but that does not demean what he did for civil rights. But according to new policy he should be wiped out. If you cannot walk past a historical mural of slaves picking cotton (sad but a part of our history) without having a melt down then you are the one with the problem.

Blacks in that day owned slaves too. Plus, there were a bunch of Irish and English whites children and adult were brought as slaves even before blacks came wholesale. Irish Catholics and Englishmen were FREE, but blacks carried a price. Irish could be literally worked to death, and were, but blacks received better treatment because they were an investment.

One of the things rarely mentioned in history is that many of the Injuns had slaves. From other tribes and black slaves they purchased from slave dealers. When President Andrew Jackson forced them to leave the eastern part of the US and go to the west of the Mississippi, the Cherokees took their black slaves with them. They are now know as the Black Cherokees. If Lying Lizzie Warren were actually part Injun she'd be the descendant of slave owners. All of this is silliness. I'm not responsible for anything any of my ancestors did. I only have to answer for what I've done.

Most of today's citizens arrived after slavery was over and have zero to do with the reparations story. And very many Americans who HAVE been here a long time, fought for the north and like hell are going to pay reparations or endure the insults to martyred ancestors. Instead I suggest that people like Kamala Harris and so many others, who have some ancestors who were slave owners and other who were slaves, go punch themselves in the face for it until they are very sorry, and leave the rest of us alone. As for all others, I suggest they shut up and help somebody else. I am busy saving babies and not worrying about slavery one hundred and seventy five years ago. At all. Totally bored about it. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Do not care what names you call me. Abortion is the current problem.

Amazing how leftist NBC can dig back 150 years to try to smear a Republican, yet somehow they have no idea where Obama's school records are.

So did mine. It’s easily found in the federal censuses of 1850 and 1860 and even earlier. But I have news for those who are feeling smug and righteous:::: It was common for a land or factory owner to rent or lease the slaves belonging to others. In addition, personal property taxes paid by slave owners benefitted the entire county——and sometimes the entire state. After slaves were freed, many counties practically went broke because they could no longer collect the taxes levied on slaveholders. Slaveholding is not “original sin,” as it is called in this article. As already mentioned, what our ancestors did 160 years ago has no bearing on us. I apologize to no one.

These people are trying to tear this country apart. To what purpose? what would they try to build on the ashes? It has all been tried.
The genius, the most fair, the freest, is OUR Constitutional Republic.
We long ago rejected slavery, although it still exists mainly in the Muslim world and Africa, and slave labor in NorK, and China, to some extent.
The Incas and Peruvians killed their captives. In tribal warfare, people who were spared being run through with a spear or impaled on pikes or tortured for days until a gory death , were consigned to slave labor. And often they were worked to death, because they had no value to them other than for the moment. A recent example, ISIS prisoners used as expendable slaves and sex slaves.
The Brits brought slavery to the Colonies. As someone here mentioned, however, slavery already existed amongst the Native populations. And slavery in these situations was brutal and savage (yes, savage).
We need some sort of national reconciliation. This won't happen until the Dems stop feeding the omnivorous beast: hatred.

Did NBC even bother to look at any demonrats? Oh wait, they don't want to draw attention to the party's previous chief KKK member. Nor do they want to look at the current crop of black and Hispanic voting slaves. Just promise them more to get elected or reelected, then stab them in the back afterward. You know, the usual drill.
