Charlottesville, Va. — Charlottesville, Virginia, will no longer celebrate Thomas Jefferson’s birthday as an official city holiday and instead will observe a day recognizing the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans. The city council voted Monday night to scrap the decades-old April 13 holiday honoring the slave-holding president and Founding Father. Charlottesville will now mark Liberation and Freedom Day on March 3, the day U.S. Army forces arrived in the city in 1865. Charlottesville has been grappling publicly for years with how to tell its history of race and discrimination. Those efforts intensified after white nationalists gathered in the city in 2017

Hey, it works for me. Dropping a holiday for a democrat to honor a Republican is just fine with me. Bet they'll rethink this once they realize it was the first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln who freed the slaves.

Hey, do these dulldos realize that if not for Jefferson starting UVA, Charlottesville would today be some jerkwater swamp in central Virginia, a Motel 6 stopover off I64 and US 29 on the way to civilization?

The lack of understanding of our history and the fact that Jefferson's Declaration of Independence made everything else possible is really breathtaking. ANd what is more amazing is that the people of Charlottesville are so stupid that they are willing to go along with this outrage. I suggest they close down the University since it would not be there if it weren't for Jefferson. Pathetic is the only word that comes to mind and the fact that the AP would print this in such a way to justify it is even more disgusting.

To be consistent, they need to close the University of Virginia.

When do we begin tearing down every building and symbol dedicated to the Democrat Party? After all they were the political institution behind slavery.

Democrats should pay the reparations of never holding office again for the sins of the Democratic Party.

If these leftists lived way back when there would never had been slavery! They would have never left it begin. They may now see a drop in tourism from the Monticello visitors. Lefties are such shallow thinkers. They have something in common with the Red Hen gal. Stupid is as stupid does.

"Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived, and so dedicated, can long endure. "
Lincoln could have spoken those words today as well.

Since Emancipation did NOT free the slaves, it's a meaningless gesture. Perhaps it's the Union Soldiers who deserve a day?

The fact that Jefferson had slaves means nothing. In its historical context, it may mean that he was a compassionate man. If you were a rich person walking past an arab slave auction, and saw a family about to be sold to different owners, with a dirty old man leering at the daughter, would you just walk on by, because you are such a progressive enlightened sort? Or would you purchase that family yourself, to keep them together in safety, to learn skills and become educated?
The worst thing you could do is to just "free them" on to the streets, without skills or an education, as was done to millions of blacks after the civil war. They were then free to starve or become criminals to survive.

They should change it to “Democrats finally decide to Free the Slaves” day.

It is more heartbreaking that there is so little pushback. It’s one of the reasons the left prevails in their efforts to besmirch great men like Jefferson.
