The Supreme Court’s 5-to-4 ruling on Department of Commerce v. New York is being characterized as nothing more serious than a temporary setback regarding President Trump’s wish to reinstate a citizenship question in the 2020 U.S. Census; the administration is expected to whip up a new rationale that the high court won’t consider “contrived” and get the question in.
Unfortunately it is far worse than that, and Chief Justice John Roberts is giving further sign that he is yet another unpleasant surprise in GOP appointments to the highest level of the Judicial Branch, following in the footsteps of David Souter (Bush 41),

G W Bush was very careless with his supreme court selections.
I hope President Trump has the chance to make one or two more additions to the SCOTUS--he has proven his commitment to address the leftist rot.

Somebody has the goods on Roberts. He sees law where none exists.....

A case could be made that during the dark Lightbringer years, somebody, or something, "got to" Roberts, in the sinister way we all know the Democrats - Organized Crime(D) - are capable of. Who knows? But it's a pattern oddly endemic to DC...

After allowing the implementation of the national disaster that was Obamacare you would think that Roberts could not top himself. Preventing or at least making the count of illegal aliens in this country impossible is more serious. How can state and federal budgets be created accurately without the knowledge that ten percent of their citizens are not really citizens? This man is actually stupid. We expected this from the Wise Latina for obvious reasons but how can any reasonable American think this way and be able to sleep at night?

Pretty obvious Obama had a strong influence on Roberts, positive or negative. A Supreme Court judge, a Chief at that, influenced by a politician, a dishonest one, too. Yikes

If the citizenship question was called a “tax”, which it is on Americans who pay for the welfare benefits as well as for the criminal activities of this invading army, Roberts would have approved it.
Roberts first opinion on Obamacare was that it was unconstitutional to mandate the purchase of a product. But when Obama created the lie that the fine for not buying health insurance was simply a tax, Roberts agreed to rule that Obamacare was constitutional.

How do we get rid of a rogue Chief Justice of the Supreme Court?

Roberts was a G W Bush blunder of the highest magnitude. Was there no vetting process in appointing him? To think he wanted Harriet Miers on the SCOTUS is telling.

#10, impeachment, short of that, another appointment. By the way has anyone seen Justice Goldberg laterly?

Like any good RINO, Roberts defers to leftist ideals when needed. He's just like the person that appointed him. Somebody has the 'goods' on Roberts? Don't think so. We are seeing Roberts exactly as the person he is: A RINO.
His reasoning on the citizenship census question was lame at best.
The best hope we have is that Trump can appoint more Conservatives to the Supreme Court to offset Roberts. That pre-supposes that trump can find a true Conservative, and not some RINO in Conservative clothing.
The real snakes in Washington are the Republicans. Too many of them mask their true intentions. The Democrats and the left are more open about their intentions daring anyone to stop them.

If Zippy was spying on Trump, what makes you think he wouldn't have done the same thing to the Dred Pirate Roberts?

What bothers me about this is that this isn't a matter of different judicial philosophies in play. This is a decision to have a certain outcome, in this case not to allow a citizenship question, and then make up some new age, psychobabble "law" to explain it. The BOCare decision made no sense and neither does this. We have a Chief Justice that, to get what he wants, willingly abandons rationality.

The citizenship question ruling should now be known as the "Mother May I?" ruling because it stipulates that from now on any census questions proposed by Commerce will have to be assessed for "sincerity" by the Supreme Court before it can be used. And by extension, it can be inferred that ANY executive action may henceforth be challenged by some federal judge (9th Circus) for the same reason.
And just like that, our constitution was destroyed by the court designed to protect it.

Change the wording around and put it back into the Census.

In this case adding a citizen ship question is perfectly appropriate. We have many precedent for asking that question.
I would suggest that PDT ignore the court and add the question. The question of citizen ship is not a constitutional issue its a regulatory one. We have many foreign nationals entering the USA, we must have a way to cull them out. Note that the court can only suggest a legal opinion about citizenship, they have no enforcement arm.
The Supreme Court has no power in this case, they have deliberated wrongly.
