For those who want their hearts broken, the story of Zohar and Gabi Ilinetsky, the parents of one-year-old twins, is a world to live inside. Zohar: twenty-seven, confident, and voluble, a construction project manager proud of his work. Gabi: fastidious, attentive, academic, an early-education specialist who used to work at a preschool. They met in Israel, where he grew up, and settled in the San Francisco Bay Area, her childhood home. While dating, they would speak often about the parenting styles that they hoped to have. “We’re old-school people,” Zohar told me recently. “My friends now are waiting until thirty-five to start thinking about kids, but always

fta In Israel, he said, everyone has free coverage for all expected medical needs, from preventive care to transplants and mental health. “I remember, even as a kid, hearing people talking about how horrible the medical system in America was,” he told me. I hate to tell these parents who actively disparage the very health care system that is at least trying to research and cure this orphan diseases that effects a tiny percentage of the world population but in a nation with socialized medicine their children would have been given palliative care and sent home to die. The cost of treating them for years would be prohibitively expensive and death panels in other countries have already done similar things. There could possibly be a situation where the state removes all their options and death is the only option.

Also of note, I remember when going through our own infertility issues one of the common questions was "Are you of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage?" According to my reproductive endocrinologist (who is actually Jewish), his group highly recommends genetic counselling for all parents of that background. Having essentially only 350 founding members of a distinct genetic community does makes them susceptible to a great many genetic issues that are far less common in world wide populations. I feel bad for these parents. Children suffering from disease is horrible. Having lost a close family member in his teens to a congenital disease requiring years of intense treatment, it is heartbreaking beyond words. I thank God for our medical community that gave him 19 full years. He would have been left to die slowly in other countries with socialized medicine. I hope that our very advanced medical community and legions of dedicated doctors and researchers can find a cure for their babies.

Employees of the online housewares giant Wayfair announced Tuesday that they would stage a walkout at the company’s Back Bay headquarters on Wednesday to protest its decision to sell furniture to the operators of facilities for migrant children detained at the southern US border. Last Wednesday, they learned that a $200,000 order of bedroom furniture had been placed by BCFS, a government contractor that has been managing camps at the border. More than 500 employees signed a letter of protest sent to company executives. When the company refused to change course, employees organized the walkout. “Knowing what’s going on at the southern border and knowing that Wayfair

On April 15, the New York Times staff gathered in the newsroom, looking up at Executive Editor Dean Baquet on a crimson staircase where he announced to rapturous applause that reporters David Barstow, Susanne Craig and Russ Buettner had won the Pulitzer Prize for their groundbreaking story on President Trump’s taxes. The trio “shattered Donald Trump’s myth of self-made billionaire,” Baquet said, exposing how the president and his family had evaded paying taxes for decades and committed “outright fraud.” Their story drew the fury of Trump who labeled it a “hit piece” from the “failing New York Times” and threatened to sue the paper. As more states pass pro-life laws, pro-abortion advocates are making their opinions on the issue known. Alyssa Milano just issued a state-by-state abortion bill guide for filmmakers, while networks and studios continue to double-down on their boycotts of states that have passed pro-life legislation. Reese Witherspoon, who has typically stayed out of politics, had her own starlet tantrum on Twitter, ignoring the will of a large majority of her southern neighbors. Miley Cyrus couldn’t resist the limelight — she coupled with Marc Jacobs to produce a sweatshirt emblazoned with “Don’t F*** with My Freedom,” the proceeds of which go to Planned Parenthood. A divided Supreme Court ruled Monday that a federal law requiring longer prison sentences for using a gun during a "crime of violence" is unconstitutionally vague. The court voted 5-4 stating the law "provides no reliable way" to determine which offenses qualify as crimes of violence. Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote the majority opinion on behalf of Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. "In our constitutional order, a vague law is no law at all," Gorsuch wrote. "Only the people's elected representatives in Congress have the power to write new federal criminal laws. And when Congress exercises that power, it has to write statutes that give ordinary people

Sadly, there are some Michael Jackson songs that — 10 years after the King of Pop’s death rocked the world on June 25, 2009 — just don’t sound the same anymore. One of them would be “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” — the bumping, sure-to-start-the-party jam from his 1982 blockbuster LP, “Thriller” — on which Jackson sings, “Tenderoni, you’ve got to be/Spark my nature, sugar, fly with me” with clenched, crotch-grabbing desire. That song — and, for some, all of MJ’s music — will never have the same pure thrill after “Leaving Neverland,” the documentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and then aired on HBO in March.

A $4.5 million House bill aimed at providing more funding to migrant families detained at the U.S.-Mexico border is posing a challenge to Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s grip on her party, as its liberal faction argue that the bill doesn’t go far enough while moderates worry that pushing for perfection will result in inaction at the border. Calls for more funding at the border come amid reports that children detained entering the U.S. from Mexico are being held under harsh conditions. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told Fox News on Monday that the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border is dire.

Often in the early evening over the last few weeks, Joe Biden’s team has told reporters that the front-runner doesn’t have a public campaign schedule for the next day, but that he instead “will meet with advisers.” Biden has lots of meetings to attend to, but increasingly this has been code for prep sessions as the former vice-president and his aides think through how to counter a wide array of inevitable attacks in what will likely be just six and a half to nine minutes of talking time on the debate stage in Miami on Thursday. Biden debated well during the 2008 cycle and as the vice-president

Medicare-for-all. Medicare for all who want it. Health care as a form of freedom. As they campaign, most of the 23 Democratic candidates for president are trumpeting bold ideas to achieve the party’s long-held dream of ushering in health coverage for every American. The problem is that many voters are not focused on such lofty goals. They want something simpler — to pay less for their own health care. Voters have plenty to sort out, with nearly two dozen Democrats running, each offering a raft of proposals on many issues. But in public opinion surveys and interviews, people rank health care as their top concern. And with insurance deductibles,

To the obvious objection that socialism failed catastrophically in Venezuela and the Soviet Union, Democratic democratic socialists have a ready response: Our model is the thriving nations of northern Europe. “I think that countries like Denmark and Sweden do very well,” Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) told an Iowa audience in April. “My policies most closely resemble what we see in the U.K., in Norway, in Finland, in Sweden,” Rep. Air pollution and acid rain are eroding marbles, while extreme weather phenomena such as droughts or torrential rains have led ancient walls and temples to develop structural problems. Even though the Acropolis hill, where the Parthenon stands, is probably Greece's best preserved archaeological site, there are signs that climate change has been increasingly affecting the monuments that stand on the hill.
