UC Santa Cruz has announced that it will remove historic bells from the “Spanish Missions” after members of the community called them offensive.
According to a report by Campus Reform, the University of California, Santa Cruz, will remove a major historical artifact from campus. The reason? Many in the UC Santa Cruz community argued that the artifact is offensive.
The “Spanish Mission” bells were used between 1769 and 1833 to highlight the path of the 21 California Missions, which were constructed to evangelize Native Americans. Now, the school views these bells as symbols of past oppression.(Snip) Valentin Lopez, chairman

Some people would complain if they were hung with a new rope. Must be pretty bad to hate everything you see and hear.

All those cities dotting the CA coastline are named after Catholic saints. Will they br renamed for communist luminaries in the near future?

Stupid. Just plain old f-ing stupid. Someone needs to grow a set and tell these people to get a grip, deal with it or get lost. You do not have the right to assume that you will never ever be offended by anyone, anything, any situation. It's time to grow up. Where does it stop?

Where’d UCSC get those bells? They used to line the El Camino Real
(Highway 101) from San Diego to San Francisco. They used to - until
they were stolen by souvenir thieves. But, maybe under the current
state of California the bells are better off in the hands of people who
aren’t “offended” by them.

Bell removal will not be enough, folks. Anyone who historically has, or presently proselytizes for ANY religion will of course be held accountable and must pay reparations to the nation for that affront. These are the same people who are incensed that America must change into a "fair" and godless country where everything is free upon demand and speech must be censored so that nobody can take offense at anything. JUST SAY NO applies in these circumstances. We WILL NOT rewrite history to suit fools ... You don't like it here? F*****G LEAVE!

So to be consistent shouldn't they drive out all of the descendants of their past oppressors...anyone who speaks Spanish? Don't just get rid of their bells. Their descendants are swarming all over the state. Oh, and they better rename their state too.

If the object of their ire were the cat mewlings from a mosque, the complainers would be sentenced to diversity training.

#5 - Timber King made the same point, the bells are the property of the State of California. He assumes Cal Trans would be the agency. The bells were first installed in the early 1900's by private citizen donations. Imagine, they wanted to recognize and celebrate California's rich Spanish heritage. In the 1920's the State Legislature agreed and bells were added to complete the entire route of the El Camino Real, The Kings Highway - as in the King of Spain.
We drive the 101 from Mendocino County down to the ex-urbs of Los Angeles every few years to visit family. We just did a trip for Memorial Day weekend. The bells still line this fabled highway. Of course, not the original cast iron bells from the early 20th century; they were stolen or melted down during WWII. The bells are still there, each with a sign "El Camino Real". The original Real was built by the Spanish to link the pueblos from now modern Mexico up into Alta California; San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco. The road existed before the missions were built. It was the friars that put out the first bells so travelers would know a mission was nearby.
As #2 points out, driving 101 a person can pray the Litany of the Saints; not only for the cities and towns, but for the counties and street names. I do that when I'm making the drive alone, and its not more than five minutes between petitions. I think the large Hispanic community in this state would be highly offended if the Spanish geographic names were changed.
What irony; the University of California at Holy Cross is terrified that a few reproduction bells might lead their students to the Man that died upon the Holy Cross.

Removing these bells will be a symbol of complete and utter stupidity and lack of respect and understanding if history. Buncha dumasses anyway.

If these bone heads were really on top of things they would remove every last one of their professors and administrators from campus. Then, they could get on with the process of higher learning, instead of brainwashing.

Has anyone outside of Santa Cruz ever heard of this tribe? This is another case of bitter students not having much to do and now too much time on their hands to cause mischief. I’m certain that they are taking 8 to 10 credits per semester in easy courses and stretching out their college time to six years. California needs another Reagan!

The archives of science fiction author Robert a Heinlein are stored at University California, Santa Cruz. I'm a fan of Mr Heinlein's work and recently drove down to UCSC to look at some of the materials. (It's a strange feeling to read the author's hand-written manuscripts of stories you've known since you were a kid.)
Heinlein was a retired naval officer and a libertarian. I suspect he would have been appalled by the behavior of these students and the pseudo adults who caved in to it.
