Make America Even Greater

Those themes were a mix of traditional Republican positions (tax reform, deregulation, conservative judges, military strength) and a populist agenda (draining the swamp, trade, immigration). Mr. Trump spent much of Tuesday night highlighting the promises kept and the resulting prosperity, while vowing to complete those items that have had a rougher ride—the border, that China deal, health care. He threw in a few new proposals at the end, like eradicating AIDS in America and a mission to Mars. But broadly the president’s message was this: Give me four more years to protect and finish the plan.

The first two missing paragraphs: At one point in his Tuesday re-election launch in Orlando, Fla., President Trump polled the audience: Run again on “Make America Great Again”? Or switch the slogan to “Keep America Great”? A roaring crowd opted for the latter. Conservative activists and GOP lawmakers hope Mr. Trump will add another option: “Make America Even Greater.” They’re happy the president is pointing out conservative achievements. They like that he’s contrasting those victories with the threat of liberal governance. But they’re also concerned by what was missing Tuesday night. Namely, an ambitious second-term agenda, one that builds on the themes that first propelled Mr. Trump to office.

Now the president has escalated his attacks even further, accusing the Times of a crime so grave it is punishable by death. On Saturday, Mr. Trump said the Times had committed “a virtual act of treason.” The charge, levied on Twitter , was in response to an article about American cyber incursions into the Russian electrical grid that his own aides had assured our reporters raised no national-security concerns. Few paid much attention. Many news organizations, including the Times, determined the accusation wasn’t even worth reporting, a sign of how inured we’ve grown to such rhetorical recklessness.

But that’s hard to square. The Justice Department has flooded the committee with information, turning over 17,000 pages of documents, and making officials available for hours of interviews. More telling, the process isn’t over. The department is readying thousands of pages more, and the committee has already scheduled additional interviews. Contempt is usually a way of breaking an impasse; there’s no need for it when an agency is cooperating. So why the rush? Mr. Cummings’s vote is the left’s latest, desperate effort to get the Supreme Court to stand down from an imminent ruling over that same census question.

In 2014, Interior delayed the renewals, calling for more “study.” In early 2016, the department’s solicitor issued a howler of a legal opinion, granting the government new authority to deny Twin Metals automatic lease renewals. It was an Obama extralegal classic: The opinion ignored precedent, existing rights and regular procedure. In a midnight kiss to green activists, the department officially blocked the leases on Dec. 15, 2016.

With all of the high-profile reports of corruption within the college admissions process surfacing, it is apparent that there is not always scholastic meritocracy. Asian Americans are being routinely discriminated against, throttled in their admissions, despite their statistically higher performance in both coursework and pre-college entrance exams. Similarly, wealthy Americans are being persecuted and penalized, under the guise of equality, for their attempts to circumvent the admissions process.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A glimpse of student athletes in peak physical condition vaping just moments after competing in a football game led Stamford High School Principal Raymond Manka to reconsider his approach to the epidemic. His school traditionally has emphasized discipline for those caught with e-cigarettes. Punishments become increasingly severe with each offense, from in-school suspensions to out-of-school suspensions and, eventually, notification of law enforcement.

The progressives in her party are lining up to demand an impeachment spectacle. They hail from uber-liberal districts, their constituents want Trump’s scalp, and they fear inaction will earn them a primary challenge. Even Mrs. Pelosi’s wingmen—those who’ve had her fake-impeachment back—are starting to break. The Washington Post reports that Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler is arguing for a formal impeachment inquiry, as are “five members of Pelosi’s leadership team.”

WASHINGTON—House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D., Calif.) said the Justice Department had agreed to turn over 12 categories of counterintelligence and foreign intelligence materials connected to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. Mr. Schiff said Wednesday that the Justice Department had agreed to turn over the documents on a rolling basis, to be completed by the end of next week. He also postponed a committee meeting, but said the panel remained ready to enforce its subpoena for the full report and underlying documents. Mr. Schiff had set Wednesday as a deadline for the Justice Department to cooperate.

There are now 23 candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination with New York’s mayor jumping in. The unveiling of the spies and tactics behind the fake collusion tale continues apace. It looks as though Mueller will testify before Congress on the 12th of Never and the impeachment train will never leave the station. Inspector General Horowitz’s reports on Comey and another on charges of illegal conduct in the DoJ and FBI are due soon, though, as usual, seem to be a long time aborning. Better late than never: Attorney General William Barr has tasked U.S. Attorney John Durham to investigate the origins of the Trump-Russia investigation. If the Justice Department had done this two years ago, the country would be in a much better place. Mr. Barr has made clear that he intends to restore his department’s credibility. The Durham appointment is a perfect example of that effort. This is how Justice ought to operate, from the nature of the probe to the choice of prosecutor. It’s a striking contrast to the hash that became of the Mueller investigation. Mr. Barr gets credit for

Steve Blass spent his boyhood afternoons in Connecticut flinging a rubber ball against the side of a half-barn, fantasizing that he was pitching in the majors. Come evening, the 10-year-old would get his radio and tune into a game, delighted when Mel Allen’s voice crackled from the transistor. “When I thought ‘baseball,’ I thought about Mel Allen,” said Blass, now a Pittsburgh Pirates announcer. “When I thought ‘Mel Allen,’ I thought about baseball.” More than in any other sport, baseball broadcasters become an inseparable part of the game they describe.
