A family that has owned and operated an Ohio bakery near Oberlin College since 1885 suffered accusations of racism and protests after stopping a black Oberlin College student from shoplifting. That prompted the Gibson family, which has owned and operated the business since its inception, to sue the college and its interim vice president and dean of students, Meredith Raimondo, asserting that they had defamed the bakery and caused emotional distress.
On Friday, a jury awarded the family $11 million.(Snip) “When you have people thinking you’re racist, and you live in a small town, the accusation can last a lifetime.”

Can I assume this will be appealed or any other legal moves to tie this in the courts for a long time?
It'll be interesting to see how local and national fellow travelers respond. There's being triggered and then there's $11,000,000 and a common sense precedent.

$11,000,000 is not enough. However, punitive damages, apparently, have yet to be determined. They should be high enough to cost administrators their jobs and severely hurt the college's pocketbook if not put it out of business. That is clearly what they intended for the Gibsons' bakery.

I plan to order some cookies from the bakery.
Ironic that the bakery's mail-order business may really pick up because of black student thugs and stupid college administrators.

Now the college needs to fire the venomous harridan Meredith Raimondo, the dean of students who orchestrated the protests, but then falsely claimed she was only there to be sure the protestors were safe.

understand their endowment is 840 million... a hugely liberal, wealthy institution.
after they get slapped with punitive damages..they should be pressured by their alumni..to pay the d**m bill!!!!. there was an alumni gathering a couple of weeks ago and it was said that most people there..were not even aware of this law suit..!!! amazing

A law and order judge...I didn't think any existed anymore. If the judge would have allowed the plea, then every store would see open and repeated shop lifting and probably even worse. Oberlin college supports and sanctions criminals.

I am hoping for much higher punitive damages. I invite you to read more about Raimondo---if you can find it. She was a prof in the "American Comparative Studies" dept at Oberlin and at one time taught a class called "queer theory." Has been accused of being anti-Semitic on the basis of the materials chosen for her classes.

Would be great if the jury awarded $100,000,000 in punitives and called for the firing and imprisonment of that hag principal.

The significance of this is very telling. I think the jury is sending the signal that all the rest of the country is getting pretty fed up with these loud mouth groups that represent such a small minority and do not represent either the culture or the values of the nation. We are a God fearing law abiding and generous nation on the whole. And finally the jury has spoken and said we have had enough of these brats and their enablers. I hope the second part of the damages gives them the triple amount that they deserve. These schools need to be shown how their own irresponsible behavior has a price and since all they care about is the money it is time they pay the piper.

"The lawsuit noted that following the arrest of the three students, Oberlin College staff, including deans and professors, Raimondo included, joined the demonstrations in front of the bakery. They handed out a flyer that accused the bakery of racially profiling and discriminating against the three students. The flyer even stated that the bakery “is a RACIST establishment with a LONG ACCOUNT of RACIAL PROFILING and DISCRIMINATION.”
As we have stated, colleges cannot be held liable for the independent actions of their students. Institutions of higher education are obligated to protect freedom of speech on their campuses and respect their students’ decision to peacefully exercise their First Amendment rights. Oberlin College acted in accordance with these obligations.
Oberlin College contradicts itself. Maybe they shouldn't have become involved in the first place.

This is such Great news! Finally some Justice and finally some common sense. I agree with our Lakerman, order cookies from the Bakery. I hope the College fires Raimondo! The Left needs to see there are consequences for trying to take away a person's living just because they don't agree with the Left's or the LBJECXQUU opinion on what is right and what is wrong! Good job Judge!

What flips me off is that when these people are caught in the act, the first thing they do is cop out with accusations of racism. They do it every time! Furthermore, the college administrations are afraid of the students. It's happened at Yale, Harvard and Dartmouth. They cave to the students instead of asserting who's in charge. Governor Ronald Reagan sent in the troops at Berkeley when the students rioted and began burning buildings. He did this over the protests of the Cal Berkeley President Clark Kerr who was defending the students right to protest. That was a state school and state property that Reagan was protecting, but private schools have to start standing up to these loony left students.

Article includes a lot of descriptive material on how the Gibsons allowed themselves to be coerced into allowing Aladin to plead guilty to a lesser charge.
