Mr. Smith Doesn’t Go to
Washington to Give Back

Robert F. Smith’s tremendous act of generosity astounded the nation and the world. Media outlets across the globe covered his commencement address to Morehouse College’s class of 2019 in which he announced that he will donate tens of millions of dollars to pay the student loan debts of 400 people, most of whom he likely doesn’t even know. While the dollar amount is, of course, impressive, what really makes this story exceptional is that it is an act of free will. The fact that this donation was voluntary and deliberate is important to recognize as our country is increasingly receptive to socialist ideas.

Those taught/encouraged not to think (thankyou, K-12), embrace socialism.

I refuse to accept the new phrase "give back" for the fine thing this man did. It ignores the graceful generosity of the giver and the obligation of gratitude from the recipients. This was not due them, it was an extraordinary act and should be celebrated as such. Go and do likewise!

Late last month, the Congressional Research Service released a report entitled “The Economic Effects of the 2017 Tax Revision: Preliminary Observations.” “On the whole, the growth effects tend to show a relatively small (if any) first-year effect on the economy,” the CRS found, adding that “Although examining the growth rates cannot indicate the effects of the tax cut on GDP, it does tend to rule out very large effects in the near term.” A number of media outlets, as could be expected, went apoplectic, declaring that the Trump tax cuts have nothing to do with the booming economy, and thus also won’t make up any of the revenue lost.

Bernie Sanders is mad. He fulminates about the abundance of consumer choices, such as “23 underarm spray deodorants” and “18 different pairs of sneakers.” He rails against credit card companies because he thinks their interest rates are too high. He thunders over the prices Americans pay for prescription drugs. The Democratic senator from Vermont, who is truly a socialist, having campaigned for a Marxist group in the 1980s, is perpetually upset with the way private banks conduct their business, and forever enraged at corporations for making profits. When he speaks, he comes off as that bitter man who shakes his fist

The Phony Case For Electric Cars 18 replies

In an editorial published last week, Bloomberg (the news site, not the former mayor) declares that the only way cities can “dramatically improve air quality and extend lives shortened by pollution” is to follow the lead of places like Amsterdam and “ban (non-electric) cars.” “Cities should offer up-front incentives to buy zero-emission cars, for instance, as well as non-financial benefits such as parking vouchers. Higher taxes on petrol and diesel cars — whether via congestion tolls or at the pump — will encourage drivers to switch and offset some of the costs of the transition,” the editorial board says.
Mueller’s Final Statement Turns

Special Counsel Robert Mueller spent 10 minutes publicly stating that his 448-page, two-part, $35 million and 22-months-in-the-making report speaks for itself, as he announced he was closing shop and retiring. In so doing, he said he couldn’t charge a sitting President with a crime, but if he could have exonerated him he would have said so. This starkly politicizes presidential investigations going forward and indicts, if we may say so, the already-dubious system of weaponizing a lawyer with a blank check, no deadline, and an open-ended mandate for him to fish where he likes with minimal oversight.

Bernie Sanders, the most authoritarian figure in the mob of authoritarian candidates being fielded by the Democratic Party, says President Trump wants to establish an authoritarian government. It’s one thing for Sanders alone to be convinced of this. It’s entirely another when the majority of his party and virtually all the mainstream media nod their heads in self-satisfied agreement. “You know that we have a president who has no understanding or respect for the Constitution of the United States, and the separation of powers,

President Trump might be openly hostile to the mainstream media, but it was the Obama administration that was engaged in a widespread effort to thwart the media. Which do you think is more harmful to a free press? The full extent of Obama’s actions against the press are only now coming to light. The Columbia Journalism Review reports on a newly released government document showing that the Obama Justice Department engaged in a far more sweeping effort to spy on the Associated Press than previously believed.

When President Bill Clinton, over 20 years ago, was probed by a special investigator, and 11 possible grounds for impeachment were found, including perjury, witness tampering and obstruction of justice, Democrats didn’t defend their party’s President the way Republicans defend Trump today. No, Democrats were far more extreme. What makes the rhetorical record so glaringly hypocritical is that in Donald Trump’s case, unlike Clinton’s, the investigator found no evidence of presidential crimes.

Is the U.S. government under the control of a shadowy group of insiders, unseen by the public and unaccountable to voters? A newly published report suggests the answer is “yes.” But lay aside the elaborate conspiracy theories about Russian infiltration. This insidious threat is far more mundane, stemming from bureaucrats who have hijacked the regulatory process to evade accountability for their actions. It’s time for Congress and President Trump to push back against federal agency rule-makers who are overstepping their authority.

Burrito lovers beware. Chipotle (CMG) could raise prices for its burritos if President Donald Trump follows through with his threat to impose tariffs on products from Mexico next week. Trump said last week he would implement a 5% tariff on all goods and imports from Mexico beginning June 10 unless “the illegal migration crisis is alleviated.” The proposed tariffs, which could raise the prices consumers pay for imports including tequila, beer and avocados, could increase to 25% in the coming months. “If the tariffs become permanent, we would look to offset these costs through other margin improvement efforts already underway,”

These shocking pictures from downtown Los Angeles capture the growing problem it faces with trash and rodents in a desperate city also trying to contain a typhoid fever outbreak linked to worsening sanitary conditions. A decision to not cap the total amount of property that homeless people can keep on Skid Row was announced last Wednesday and it sparked fury among some officials who say it will ‘only perpetuate the public health crisis that already exists’ there. That, coupled with the news a Los Angeles police detective has been diagnosed with typhoid fever, has sparked concern among LA’s residents.

At what point does Fox News pull the plug when a featured talking head spouts a discredited conspiracy theory? Donna Brazile, who forever discredited herself as corrupt when she supplied debate questions in advance to her former boss, Hillary Clinton, and was fired by CNN for it, found a new home at Fox News as one of their “contributors” (people paid to be available a certain number of hours for on-air commentary). But in an appearance over the weekend, she made the argument that Hillary Clinton only lost because of Russian interference – a contention for which there is no evidence whatsoever: (hat tip: Daily Caller)

"Crossfire Hurricane” — the melodramatic code name for the FBI/CIA spy operation on candidate Trump and his early presidency — was run for the FBI by then-FBI Director James Comey, his deputy Andrew McCabe, Special Agent Peter Strzok, and a few others. Then-CIA director John Brennan ran it for the CIA. Brennan had to have help, but who was it? A lot of evidence points to the CIA’s then-chief of station in London in 2016-2017, and now the Director of Central Intelligence, Gina Haspel. President Trump claimed that the FBI and CIA’s spying on his campaign and early presidency was treason. Attorney General William Barr said that, legally, it wasn’t. Barr is correct.
