Alexa has been eavesdropping on you this whole time

Would you let a stranger eavesdrop in your home and keep the recordings? For most people, the answer is, "Are you crazy?" Yet that´s essentially what Amazon has been doing to millions of us with its assistant Alexa in microphone-equipped Echo speakers. And it´s hardly alone: Bugging our homes is Silicon Valley´s next frontier. Many smart-speaker owners don´t realize it, but Amazon keeps a copy of everything Alexa records after it hears its name. Apple´s Siri, and until recently Google´s Assistant, by default also keep recordings to help train their artificial intelligences. So come with me on an unwelcome walk down

Made sure our kids know we don’t ever want one of these things! I turned Siri off on my iphone as soon as i figured out it was listening to me and then putting ads in the browser for things i had only talked about - Told the kids to, too, but they don’t see the big deal.

Alexa, assume the position and bark like a dog. Strangle M. Zuckerberg and make it look like J. Bezos did it. Etc....

Not me, I wouldn´t have that in my house. Two relatives have them, and I do NOT like it. They apparently do.

Late at night I got a phone call from my 93 year old sister and she wondered why I was talking to her out of thin air. It turned out her Alexa had called me on it´s own after learning my number from her previous call to me days before. I would never have such a thing in my house.

Dittos #6. Also I was on facebook for all of an hour before I realized it was not a good (private) thing or place to be.

Alexa is a tough old bird. I´ve said some really rotten things to her and she takes them in stride. Disable the mike on your toys and she´ll never hear anything you say.

Bezos:
"Alexa, send naked ´D!ck Pics´ to Secret Admirer."
Alexa:
"Got it. Send naked ´D!ck Pics´ to National Enquirer."
Seems he was ´Hoist by his own Petard´, to mangle a bit of Shakespeare.

#9, "disable the mike".....sure, right. Do you actually believe that you have the power to do that?
If so, I have some really nice land in Fla you might be interested in.
Grin.
You have absolutely no way to know if that does ANYTHING at all, unless you open it up, know your electronics well and CUT THE WIRES.
IMO, I will never have anything like that.

TV´s and phones also have listening devices. There is no real privacy anymore. My son has a Siri thingie. He talks to it like it´s a real person and heck, maybe it is on the other end. I not only don´t do Facebook, I don´t do twitter and all the other social networks. I do know Windows can get into my computer at will. They kept telling me to leave my computer on so they could ´upgrade´ stuff. I turned it off, unplugged it and took the stick out. They still uploaded stuff. Nothing is private.

Amazon and Google may be interested in only marketing tricks to sell you stuff but we know what the NSA and CIA is interested in, total tracking and you know they have the technology. Don´t make it easy for them.

14, if the laptop had the battery out, you can be certain that nothing was uploaded at that time period. Prior or after, whenever you turned it on and connected to the net, yes. Cannot happen when powered down and battery out.
You CAN set this to NOT update if you want, at least on Win 7 that I have. Not sure about Win 10, but it is my intent to never use Win 10.

I wouldn´t buy an Alexa or anything like that. I have the cameras that face me on my ipads, phone and computer covered with nail polish. Ha! Our kids tease me. Oh well...

There will never be an Alexa or any other similar device in my home. Those devices are a fool´s folly.

With an infinite amount of information, who listens and who cares? I don’t, but don’t have Alexa to register if I pass gas now and then. I feel badly for her.

Got one for a present. I thought ohK... never been out of the box and is in a landfill listening away to its hearts content! 30 years in technology makes me a non-noob!
