Gov. Janet Mills signed a bill Friday to abolish Columbus Day. Maine will keep the day a state holiday but will now celebrate it as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. “Our history is by no means perfect. But, for too long, it has been written and presented in a way that fails to acknowledge our shortcomings,” Mills said in a statement. “There is power in a name and in who we choose to honor. Today, we take another step in healing the divisions of the past,” Mills said. Native groups have been critical of Christopher Columbus, viewing his discovery of America as an

I am waiting for someone to find some dirt on Gutenberg, then decide that extolling the genius of the printing press is passé and should be wiped from the public consciousness. Centuries of access to literacy would be sneered at if it was found that Gutenberg pinched a woman on the rear end or made an untoward comment about someone of another race.
Perfect people are usually the ones who stay home in comfort. The risk-takers and explorers have a tendency to be arrogant and what some would call crazy. But our world would be a sorry, backward place without them.

Admiral of the Sea Columbus, the man who discovered the Trade Winds, has a holiday in five countries. In one of those nations even the money is named after him.

Seems that the year 2018 and 2019 people are just the smartest and most wise in human history and are correcting all the deplorables who ever existed in America and who in their time chose to honor people of value and accomplishment. It this continues this will be known as the “ Stupid Generation”

I wonder when we will celebrate the wise ´indigenous´ people that sold Manhattan and in essence, America, for $24 worth of beads and trinkets?

Looks like it is time for me to stop patronizing LL Bean and any other Maine entities I currently do business with. I will send a letter to LL Bean explaining why I am severing our relationship. It probably won´t matter as I think their corporate culture is pretty well aligned with the Marxist dribble.

Is there even ONE politician in Maine with a brain? Columbus landed far south of Maine in the West Indies and could care less if they recognize him up there. Erasing him from the calendar can not change the facts of history.

Just think how brave Columbus was. Heading west into the unknown in 3 small ships, not knowing what was ahead. I wonder what these jackassses think of the NA indians, raiding the villages of other tribes, taking slaves, subjecting captives to unspeakable tortures, such as slowly carving off pieces of their bodies and then subjecting them to a slow roasting over a fire.

No, our history has not been written in a way that does not recognize our shortcomings. It has been written in multiple ways, as it can be only in a free society. This misrepresentation by the governor is part of the effort to slur our founders and to take our culture from us.

As history was unfolding I guess PC was not in their minds. Some lusted for gold, some for land, others to conquer other people in the name of a nation far away. Who knows what this place would look like if PC was applied I´m sure pretty squalid.

Name even a single person who is or was INDIGENOUS to the Americas, please. NO part of the human race originated here.
Every tribe, nation, and person who has ever lived in these two continents emigrated here from somewhere else. (These ´progressives´ ignore that even their own ivory-tower archaeologists have shown that the people the Left imagines to be indigenous migrated across the land bridge between Siberia and Alaska during the last Ice Age.)

Leftists try to erase history. This is one more drip in the drip-drip-drip effort to erase our history and the heroes in it.
Virtue signalling and political correctness are strangling our nation to death. Of course that is leftists´ objective.
If I were working in Maine, I would make every effort to show up at work on "Indigenous" Day.

I live here and I knew when this woman got elected there would be many changes but this is totally ridiculous. Gov. LePage had set aside money for a rainy day and didn’t spend uselessly but as soon as Mills got sworn in she planned to use any and all monies for her left wing ideas. LePages savings are wiped out. We have one of the most liberal states to hand out freebies to those immigrants and illegals. She just stopped the photo id’s on the EBT card. They were put on cards to stop fraud. She’ll probably get re-elected. Sigh.

That’s nice. So now what, Maine? Are you going to insist that the name of that South American country and the big river running through the Pacific Northwest into the ocean be changed? What about that university in NYC? And don’t worry about Ohio. Ohioans will be glad to change their capitol city’s name just to prove to your satisfaction that they care about your sensitivities.

What about the Dutch, Spaniards. Portuguese, French, etc. who explored and conquered North America. Someone is going to have a big job re-naming cities, towns, rivers and mountains that were named for the early explorers. Ponce de Leon Avenue runs through Atlanta....wipe it out?

Maine´s capital is Augusta, arguably named after Caesar Augustus, a roman emperor who owned lots of slaves.
Why honor him? Change the name! Change the name! (Vichy or Quisling would work.)
