Hispanics have “legitimate fear” of the Trump administration and its quest to query Americans about their citizenship on the 2020 Census, Justice Sonia Sotomayor said Tuesday, as the Supreme Court debated whether President Trump has the power to add the question back in to the decennial count. The government’s lawyer, Solicitor General Noel Francisco, was less than two sentences into his argument when Justice Sotomayor pounced for the first time, keeping up a steady stream of questions suggesting Mr. Trump and his team invented reasons to ask about citizenship, and that Hispanics in particular will refuse to take part, souring

The last I checked was that the Supreme Court was there to determine if something was constitutional or not!!! Period!!!
What does fear or feelings have to do with if something is constitutional or not?!?!?!? Let me help you, Justice Sotomayor -- they have absolutely nothing to do with whether it is constitutional or not to have that question on the census!!!! Please do the freakin´ job you are paid for!!!!!

Is nothing pure anymore? Even the Supreme Court has been corrupted by the Obola. Doing exactly what she agreed to do before she was nominated. Muddy the waters on important decisions.

American citizens with Hispanic heritage have NOTHING to fear. Why would they? The purpose of the citizenship question in the census is to determine, based upon the legitimate number of voters, what number of Representatives are appointed to represent a state in the House of Representatives.
"The U.S. Constitution requires a census every 10 years of all persons living in the
country for the purpose of apportioning seats in the U.S. House of Representatives (Article I, sec. 2,
clause 3) among the states. The Constitution explicitly requires an “actual Enumeration” of “all
persons,” imposing on the federal government the duty to count the “whole number of persons in
each State.” Both Republican and Democratic administrations, through the U.S. Department of
Justice (DOJ), have confirmed unequivocally that the Constitution requires a count of all persons
living in the United States on Census Day, regardless of citizenship status."

If the "Hispanics are "legssl" they have nothing to fear.
If they are here illegally than they do not have a voice in our government and are not legally allowed to vote in our elections and yes, that will affect the democrats.

I remember when she was nominated and said something about "making laws" instead of interpreting laws.
For the fun of it, I tell people to be sure to fill out the census because there will be more ´free stuff´

Common sense will tell you that Hispanics who are US citizens or who are legally present in the USA would have no reason to have any sort of fear from filling out a census form and declaring their citizenship status, and that the only Hispanics who would have an “irrational fear” of doing that would be illegal aliens.
With about 22 million illegal aliens now in the USA, it is also “irrational” to believe that the US Government would be able to use the census questionnaire to identity and round them up for deportation.
This issue just goes to show that just by their unlawful presence in the USA that large numbers of illegal aliens cause the apportionment of US congressional seats into low income urban areas that have large numbers of illegal aliens sojourning there, Making it more likely that the leftist and liberal Democrats will win the elections in those districts with a much lower vote count then other districts that consist of mostly all US citizens, simply because those urban illegal alien heavy districts where lots of illegal aliens are sojourning have a lot less legal voters then other US citizen heavy districts.

People that make major decisions based on "fear" are usually fools.
And Sotomayor speaking for Hispanics, as a group, just because of her heritage, is arrogant. Polls are showing that about half of Hispanics are supporting Trump and they agree with controlling illegal immigration. This is why Sotomayor should keep her focus on the LAW not her biased and skewed interpretation of "group" of people. She is not in her role as a representative of the people. That would be a Congressional representative. Her role is as a representative of THE LAW.

The reasoning though, is correct. Representation in the House is assigned by population of native born Americans and legal immigrants. Losing the manipulative ability to pad the numbers with illegals are what the Democrats are most afraid of.

Representation in our Government depends upon accurate Citizen count.
If the count is skewed by illegals, isn´t my vote disenfranchised?
There are a number of other facets pertaining to the Immigration issue. The overwhelming majority of Americans (including those with Latino Heritage) want them resolved. This is a winning issue for Conservative Republicans.

I take it that she means illegal Hispanics. I would imagine they have the same type of fear as other CRIMINALS in our country. So what! Does that give them special privileges to break our laws?

The current background-check paperwork when purchasing a firearm includes the questions of race and citizenship. How do the illegal Hispanics answer those? Answer, they don´t. They carry firearms illegally just as they do everything else illegally to live in this country. On the census form they can easily claim that Sanchez, Cortez and Vasquez are Polish names so what´s to be afraid of? The result is that we have an inaccurate census being taken every decade so what´s the point?

#6, I´ll add this:
If the "Irish" are "legal" they have nothing to fear.
If they are here illegally than they do not have a voice in our government and are not legally allowed to vote in our elections and yes, that will affect the democrats.

If someone were interested enough to investigate and legitimately report, they would find that a good portion of the illegal alien population are falsely claiming to be US citizens to get work and social welfare benefits to which they are not lawfully entitled. Most times when illegal aliens do that, they also attest on US Government forms falsely that they are US citizens. The result of that is that those illegal aliens are committing felonies as the federal criminal laws make it unlawful for aliens to falsely claim that they are US citizens. If illegal aliens would do that, they would have little problem falsely answering a citizenship questionnaire on a census form about which they do not really have a clue.

But the (lower court) judges said the motives and means matter, and there the Trump administration cut too many corners.
The Supreme Court is there to determine if something was constitutional or not. They should not be concerned about motives, means nor cutting corners.

The Unwise Latina´s point appears to be that most Hispanics are in the USA illegally, and thus fear discovery by admitting that they should not be here. Highly offensive no matter how you slice it.
