Booker announces legislation to pave path for slavery reparations

Sen. Cory Booker announced a bill Monday to form a commission to recommend reparations for slavery, taking the reins of one of the most intriguing and controversial agenda items from the 2020 campaign. Mr. Booker becomes the highest-profile lawmaker to sign onto reparations legislation. He said it could solve persistent racism and discrimination that have been built into the system for decades, leading to disparate outcomes for all black Americans. “This bill is a way of addressing head-on the persistence of racism, white supremacy, and implicit racial bias in our country,” he said. “It will bring together the best

Comments:

I thought welfare, affirmative action, and tearing down all Confederate monuments was supposed to achieve this aim. Next will be the problem that white people live in nicer neighborhoods, have better jobs, etc.

So Booker believes that this will solve the persistent racism that blacks hold toward whites? (S/O) We have many, many black politicians, most entertainment media and sports venues are predominantly black and we just rid ourselves of a black president and his angry wife and yet this country discriminates. It seems to discriminate against white men.

Two dozen major cities are no-go war zones. Retail spaces, offices/skyscrapers, historical sites, theaters, museums, etc. stand empty or in ruins thanks to the armies of ´victims´ living in the immediate area.

Where are the reparations for that?

Another bribe, as if LBJ´s Great Society were not bribe enough, to a small segment of the Black population which chooses not to fend for itself, is only going to require another bribe down the road, and another, and another.

Not one Black person in the USA today was ever a slave. Not one.

That there are many more Black people today who are not self-sufficient than there were back in 1960 testifies that giving money to people does not help them.

The #walkaway movement must have the left really scared. They´re resorting to outright bribery of their once reliable base ethnic group to keep from losing them.

In the process, they will no doubt alienate even more whites, which they see as no problem since whites have never done anything that wasn´t evil to begin with.

I don´t see how taking money from one group -- by force essentially -- and giving it to another group will improve race relations.

So . . . let´s say the Feds do slavery reparations. Some of my money (in the form of taxes cuz I´m a white guy) gets taken away to give to African-Americans. Which African-Americans get the money? What about mixed-race African-Americans? Do they get only part of what non-mixed-race African-Americans get? What about black folks who came to the the United States AFTER the Civil War?

Let´s say I have relatives who fought on the side of the Union (which I do). Do I get a discount on my taxes because my ancestors fought to stop slavery?

What I have be on guard against so often is resentment. I see a lot of freebies handed out to minorities. White guys take an awful lot of guff. How do slavery reparations make me want to be better about race relations in America? Will they help African-Americans treat white folk better?

Race baiting is SO unattractive and SO useless if you are trying to improve things. It´s all about power, NOT equality.

Reparations will not go through. What the attempt will do, is increase animosity and attacks from entitlement Blacks against their so-called oppressors, namely Whites and Jews.

What does the Left think it will gain by spurring on a Race/Civil War? Are Booker and Warren planning on manning the barricades?

The Dimokkkraps started the Civil War in order to perpetuate slavery, 80% of northern dimokkkraps voted against abolishing slavery (the southern dimokkkraps had formed the confederacy by the time that vote took place), they formed the KKK to terrorize black people, and they passed laws and conducted themselves in such manner as to create what is known as “southern racism” in order to maintain poltical power.

What is spurtacus doing being associated with this organization?

The Dimokkkraps should have all their assets applied towards reparations.

Desperate to keep blacks "on the plantation", in thrall to Dems for at least one more election cycle. This Bull Manure cynical reparations scam is just the latest attempt to literally BUY their votes, with taxpayer money.

Too many black citizens are seeing that not only have Dems not helped them for decades, including our previous half-black President, but that Trump HAS greatly helped them via a huge improvement in the economy, and trying to keep illegals from stealing their jobs.

The Dems are frightened, grasping at any racist straws, doubling down on their cynical deception, trying to buy votes.

If blacks want more money than welfare, free housing, food stamps, etc., then they need to get off their backsides and get a job. It will guarantee an earned income, a few benefits and some pride. If it works for the white folks it can work for them. See, that´s equality. And they can give up their Obama phones and get on a plan of their choosing....more equality.

Seriously, what do they think the trillions spent on welfare, affirmative action, etc. over the last 60 years have been if not a "reparations" program? Too bad they have been such a failure. It´s time to end all such programs and simply treat all our citizens equally.

Our black community may want to ask their Democrat plantation owners why they instead want to force THEM to pay for all the free services for Mexican and Central American illegal immigrants.

So, tell us how it will be administered.

e.g. Obama was half black, but his ancestors never experienced US Slavery – he gets nothing.
His wife can probably trace her self back to owners. She gets a share.
His daughters get a half share.
Now if you are to get reparations you have to prove that you are:
1.) All black, traceable to slaves, with no white blood. (You are looking kinda light skinned Corey)
2.) No Native American – First Nation blood.
3.) No later entry after 1865 black from Africa, Brazil, or any of the islands.
4.) Can you prove your lineage? Can’t tell who your father is/was ? Thanks for playing, but no.
5.) Will the terms Mulatto, Octaroon, and Quadroon come back into fashion?
6.) Who gets to decide? And is this a one off, never to be mentioned again deal?

I know my post is late in coming but you should look deeper at this. If we give them some money they will no longer have any reason to think we owe them something.
After reparations we can call and treat them as they really are. They will no longer have an excuse why they can´t get a job, need to collect welfare or get ahead solely by affirmative action.
I´d pay big money to take all of their lame excuses away from them. Reparations will do the trick. Take away their excuses.
Law of unintended circumstances couldn´t be sweeter.

Ok, reparations. I think we should tell the African American Citizens, that if they are unhappy with the results of their ancestors being slaves, i.e. their standard of living, we will do one of the following, (1) We will give them and their family a ticket to Africa, all expenses paid. (2) we won´t demand repayment of their education, their welfare, their subsidized housing (3) We will demand that they pay the families of the Union Soldiers killed freeing their ancestors, and the federal government for the cost of the war to free them.

Unlike the Union argument, my g-grandfather, a Cherokee escapee from the Trail of Tears was living in Rapides Parish, in the no-mans-land along the Texas-Louisiana border when the war broke out. He and his brothers enlisted in the 18th Louisiana Infantry, not to protect slavery but because that was the first time a white man (a recruiter who came calling on the farm in 1861) had actually asked him kindly to do anything and he felt like he had to oblige that kindness. So because my ancestors fought for their home state, does that mean I am morally or duty bound to pay reparations? I think not but I´m willing to make a deal: Booker can apply my share of the reparations money for the Trail of Tears to descendants of slaves.

Oh Cory, here is your ´reparations´ for the first time in 50 years a non uniparty President has created an economy with more jobs than workers. The point of this country is the OPPORTUNITY for personal improvement. Not the guarantee of it.

For some reason you choose to belong to the political party that not only fought a Civil War to preserve slavery, but for many decades after they did everything they could to keep former slaves from improving their lives. NO American today has to suffer under the rat party´s Jim Crow laws. If you or your party had an intelligence, honesty or manners, you would say, ´on second thought, I want to thank the Republican Party of Lincoln for ending slavery at a cost of hundreds of thousands of lives. I also want to thank this Republican President for providing the most opportunity in years for anyone who wants to work to improve their lives.´ But being a pandering, race hustler who utterly failed to improve anything in Newark, you won´t.

Brian Kemp, the pro-life legislation he signed into law May 7, and feminists’ ongoing struggle with “the patriarchy.” “While folks are debating tactics to respond to Georgia’s heartbeat bill, let’s remember that 76% of the white Women electorate in GA (more than white men) voted for Brian Kemp

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has signed the bill to make abortion a felony in Alabama, the governor’s office announced. The law does not take effect now or immediately change the legality of abortion in Alabama. “To the bill’s many supporters, this legislation stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians’ deeply held belief that every life is precious and that every life is a sacred gift from God,” Ivey said in a press release.(Snip) But the sponsors said their intent was to trigger litigation that could lead to a challenge of abortion rights nationally. That course of events would involve federal

Border Patrol agents now spend less than 50 percent of their time patrolling the border, a top official said Wednesday, putting a stark face on the border crisis. Customs and Border Protection acting Commissioner John Sanders made the revelation at a press conference where he stood next to Sen. Lindsey Graham, who proposed new legislation to try to combat the surge of illegal immigrants. Mr. Sanders said his agents are now spending more time changing diapers, driving migrants and providing medical care for families and children than they are spending out in the field on patrol. That’s worse than earlier

The Alabama Senate Tuesday passed a bill criminalizing abortion in nearly all cases, approving the most sweeping restrictions on the procedure in the United States and almost certainly guaranteeing a legal challenge if signed by Gov. Kay Ivey. The measure passed the Senate 25 to 6 after more than four hours of often emotional debate that at one point led to the introduction of spectators who had abortions after being raped.(Snip) Sponsored by Rep. Terri Collins, R-Decatur, the bill would make it a Class A felony—punishable by life or 10 to 99 years in prison—for a doctor

The marriages were short and not for love. But instead of a Las Vegas-style, alcohol-fueled ceremony, these marriages were criminal schemes. Authorities announced Monday that nearly 100 people have been indicted in a massive conspiracy in which immigrants paid as much as $70,000 to briefly marry a U.S. citizen and obtain a permanent resident card known as a “Green Card.” The indictment, returned by a grand jury in Texas late last month, accuses 96 people of taking part in the Houston-based criminal organization, which created sham marriages between legal U.S. residents and aliens, mostly from Vietnam, for years.

Donald Trump’s gotten under his skin. Mayor Bill de Blasio grew hoarse shouting over the cranked-up crooning of Frank Sinatra tunes playing in the Trump Tower lobby as he tried to promote his “Green New Deal.” The mayor had planned a press conference outside the tower that houses president’s Manhattan residence, but Mother Nature forced him to relocate the event into some very unfriendly territory—the gilded building’s public lobby.(Snip) Trump Tower staff turned up the dial on the PA system just moments before the mayor entered the 5th Avenue building. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Sunday that growing cauliflower in community gardens is part of the “colonial” attitudes that her Green New Deal will stamp out. The New York Democrat, who introduced the proposal to tackle climate change by radically transforming the economy, posted a series of Instagram videos filmed in her home state talking about community gardens as a “core component” of her proposal. “What I love too is growing plants that are culturally familiar to the community. It’s so important,” she said as she filmed a community garden in the Bronx. “So that’s really how you do it right.

The Nevada Senate approved Tuesday a National Popular Vote bill on a party-line vote, sending the legislation aimed at upending the Electoral College to the governor. Assembly Bill 186, which passed the Senate on a 12-8 vote, would bring Nevada into the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, an agreement between participating states to cast their electoral votes for the winner of the popular vote. If signed as expected by Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak, Nevada would become the 16th jurisdiction to join the compact, along with 14 states and the District of Columbia.

Americans today are more closely divided than they were earlier in the last century when asked whether some form of socialism would be a good or bad thing for the country. While 51% of U.S. adults say socialism would be a bad thing for the country, 43% believe it would be a good thing. Those results contrast with a 1942 Roper/Fortune survey that found 40% describing socialism as a bad thing, 25% a good thing and 34% not having an opinion. The Roper/Fortune survey is one of the oldest trend questions measuring attitudes on socialism in the U.S. Gallup's update of the question in an April 17-30 survey finds

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., joined the legion of “Game of Thrones” fans disappointed by the show’s finale. “I’m sad,” said Ocasio-Cortez in a video of the two legislators posted to Warren’s Twitter account Tuesday. “Disappointed about it.” “I was just really… meh,” said Warren. The pair bemoaned the arcs of the female characters who seemed prime to rule at the end of the series. Instead, one “went crazy” and the other settled for ruling only part of the continent. The lawmakers were not alone in their distaste for the series’ treatment of its female characters

He also made this ad hominem attack on Trump over the weekend, playing Puritan for us: On Sunday, Romney was back at it, attacking the president's character. "I think he could substantially improve his game when it comes to helping shape the character of the country," Romney said on CNN.

Jerry Nadler’s cynical, cowardly show 19 replies

Jerry Nadler was at it again Tuesday, waxing indignant about former White House counsel Don McGahn’s refusal to testify before the House Judiciary Committee. It’s all a show, meant to keep old news in the headlines, and to appease the large “Impeach Now!” wing of the Democratic Party without actually doing anything. Everyone on Judiciary knows perfectly well that Congress can’t compel testimony from top presidential advisers except in the most extraordinary circumstances: The chief executive’s right to frank, confidential discussions with his staff is well-established. So Nadler’s bluster about how he’ll “go to court to secure” McGahn’s appearance is just noise for the cameras. Then again, that’s all

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-NY, accused the White House of "intimidating" former White House Counselor Don McGahn from testifying on Capitol Hill and said it was becoming "more and more difficult" to not consider President Trump's impeachment on Monday night. Nadler told CNN anchor Chris Cuomo that his committee will hold McGahn "in contempt" for not complying with the subpoena and will take the battle to court. "You are dealing with a lawless president who is willing to go to any lengths to prevent testimony that might implicate him, that does implicate him," Nadler said. Nadler expressed that Trump's "lawless behavior"

San Diego-based startup TuSimple said its self-driving trucks will begin hauling mail between USPS facilities in Phoenix and Dallas to see how the nascent technology might improve delivery times and costs. A safety driver will sit behind the wheel to intervene if necessary and an engineer will ride in the passenger seat. There's a recurring theme in American science fiction where the country loses its way, endures some horrible but cleansing disaster, and then rediscovers the blessings of liberty. You'll find it in Robert Heinlein's "Future History" stories, where the Crazy Years -- a period of rapid technological advances, decaying social norms, and mass psychosis -- leads to the backlash of a religious dictatorship. The Prophets regime is eventually toppled by a liberty-loving group dedicated to individual rights. The theme is even more pronounced in Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, where a socialist regime puts the country into another Great Depression, only worse. The country's capitalists
