he Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Thursday repealed rules that banned baptisms for children of gay parents and that labeled same-sex couples as sinners eligible for expulsion — marking a reversal of policies condemned as jarring detours from a push by the faith to be more compassionate about LGBTQ issues. LGBTQ church members and groups that support them expressed relief about what they called an important step forward for the faith. However, they also said they were angry about the harm the 2015 policies had caused and the lack of an apology by church leaders. In a statement posted

I´m sorry, but the god of the Mormon church is not God.
I hope this causes some of their membership to rethink their teachings.

Every Mormon I have known has been a hard core conservative.
I can´t see how this is going to play positively among the regular members in the pews.
However, what is that old Polish saying -- not my circus, not my monkeys!!!!!

Having grown up Mormon in Utah I have to disagree that most are hard-core conservative. Before Roe v. Wade the state was bi-partisan. Abortion did tip the balance in favor of Republicans. In 2016 Donald Trump got less than 50% of the vote. He got the plurality so the electoral votes went his way. The state is not hard core on immigration. Mormons, by the way, are Christian and their God is the God of the Bible.

Want to say it was Mormon churches that were big supporters and okay with Rex Tillerson of Exxon, and then CEO of Ernst & Young that were pushing for Boy Scouts to admit gay boys and leaders.

#2, OK, but how do you explain the electing Romney to the Senate?

Actually I am Mormon and I get this. It´s learning to love the sinner but not the sin. And frankly we all get it right and then sometimes get it wrong. I know I sure have. The emphasis in the church is simply this...ask God, get your own testimony, we are not to rely solely on the leadership. And yes #1 there is one God and his son Jesus Christ. It is the same God.

If you read my comments in #2, I said that every Mormon I have known has been a hard core conservative.
Those have all been Mormons living in Texas. I have never been to Utah, and have no desire to visit any state that would send a RINO like Romney to the Senate!!!!
But I´m pretty sure the Mormons in Texas have seen the light and know lie-beralism is a mental disorder!!!!!!!

I´ve only been in Utah for the last 6 years and I have already seen this "church" change its stance on gays 3 times!
1. It joined a gay pride parade in solidarity of gays in Utah.
2. A year or so later it did a 180´ telling families, "if a gay is in your home and you don´t kick him out, YOU will be excommunicated."
3. Now this change where #2 has been rescinded.
If this were a religion from the True God, it would NEVER have done either #1 or #2.
#3 is barely a "love the sinner, not the sin," stance.
It seems more a financial decision based on plunging attendance numbers, merging many congregations due to lack of congregants and PR moves like their "leader" meeting the Pope.

It is easy to make radical changes in core beliefs when your beliefs are made up in the first place.

I knew many Mormons back in Arizona. They appeared to be conservative BUT personally they were fairly libertine on morality. They never joined in our community Pro-Life rallies and events with the other churches. I always found that odd. The local stake here has no problem with homosexuals and if pressed, their members will tell you so because I have asked.

Not too big of a change since the first stance was only because thought of the young kids coming to church and hearing their parents weren´t living Bible doctrine. The allowing the baptisms etc is just more freedom of choice since the doctrines remain same as literal translation of Bible.
There is a saying about motes and logs in eyes that some Jesus possessive people ought to look to IMO. Or more American culture updated we might all mind our own business?
Mitt was elected because of name and fame and party. He never ran on going there to be a member of the never Trump resistance. Many LDS people like being apolitical and registered independent (or did until only party members could vote in party primaries).
Mitt isn´t even getting the honor of a tweet from President so he must be ineffectual or hoisting self on own petard--ie no threat?
Love the sinner but not the sin?

Thank you, #6. I always marvel at the dislike of Mormons on this website by so many posters. I know and have worked with many Mormons, and they have all been good citizens and are family oriented. I think Romney falls in that category,. The country would be better off today if he had become president instead of Obama.

I don´t dislike Mormons, just their theology. Read about the "church" from its inception and draw your own conclusions.
