The feds need a backup plan if one of the two 108-year-old tunnels connecting Penn Station to New Jersey fails, a bipartisan pair of congressmen said Monday. “This is a matter of national security,” said Rep. Pete King (R-L.I.).(Snip) King was joined by Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) at a Penn Station news conference to stump for a bill that would require the Trump administration to come up with money for two new train tunnels beneath the Hudson River. King and Gottheimer agreed that the tunnel is vital to the regional and national economy.

Texans don’t want to fund the tunnel, use ferry’s...
Texans want Feds to fund a wall along Mexico/Central America border. County hospital taxes in Dallas are more than our city taxes - paying for all the birthright illegal babies at Parkland hospital.

Trade the tunnel for the entire southern border wall.

These two said that 12 million foreign citizens illegally invading our country, bringing in drugs, diseases and violence to our streets, WASN’T a threat to National Security but a plumber in Arkansas needs to subsidize the Stock Exchange Brokers ride to work in NY because that IS. Wow.

What Y´all said. This is security issue but the border crisis is a contrived emergency?
You want a tunnel grab a shovel.

Again, if these cities and states looked at social programs with a critical eye, there would be more monies available for things cities and states are supposed to do (e.g., infrastructure).

Build your own damn tunnel. You fund the border wall where a true national security is, then we can talk. Until then, I suggest you hire more ferries...before they collapse so folks aren’t killed due to your negligence.

Just ask A.O.C.. She is a bartender, economist, foreign policy expert, climate scientist and structural engineer. She will be more than happy to tell you how to fix those tunnels. As an added bonus she will also repair your car and provide you with marriage counseling.

Why does the Trump Admin need to make a plan for NJ/NY Transit Authority? The article says they don´t have a plan in case something happens to one of the tunnels. Why not? Seems like most public services are required to have some sort of emergency plans. Why not Amtrack.
Trains could easily bypass Manhattan and go through NJ. The people of NYC would have to slum it and go to NJ to get on Amtrack. There, a plan, problem solved. Get over your superiority complex people of the northeast (NJ /NY). If you are so superior and economically important, figure it out and pay for it since you are the one who use it.

I lived in that area and know that you don´t need to use either tunnel to get to downtown NYC, nor do you need either to travel north beyond the city.
Ya want a tunnel, go to Home Depot and buy two shovels, one at each end and start digging, bonus if you miss each other , you´ll have two tunnels.

The feds own those tunnels? I didn´t know that. Both states waste billions on everything else except infrastructure (unless it´s NYC). Let Cuomo and whomever stupid libtard runs NJ pay for it. They want it; they pay for it.

The Pols in NY/NJ are running out of palettes of money. They long for the day when they can have a big dig like that of Boston. Maybe a 1000 palette project?

In the old days they used to have railroad ferries running back and forth from Manhattan to New Jersey. Passengers taking trains East and North of New York City traveling from South of New York rode a ferry from New Jersey to Manhattan and then took a train to the East or North. Passengers going to the South of New York rode ferries to New Jersey and then took their train. If one of the Hudson Tunnels became unusable it would not take long to set up such ferry services again. Train cars would not be stuck, as there are other ways, including the surviving tunnel, that those trains could use to get across the Hudson or North River. In the long run those two Hudson River tunnels, along with the two East River tunnels will have to be replaced if AMTRAK is to continue operating long distance trains through Penn. Station in New York City.

We would have more sympathy if states like NY did not squander billions on schemes to harvest votes for the Democrat party. Money to repair basic infrastructure should be set aside every year.

The east coast gets what is deserves. Seattle just opened a two mile tunnel, right next to Puget Sound. Of course, it´s safe. How is Boton´s big dig doing now?

How about if Broke New Jersey and Broke New York tighten their Very Important belts and maintain and build their own infrastructure? Instead, they use the exorbitant tolls they collect to fund public transportation, union labor, and layer upon layer of grossly overpaid managers, with most of these slots available only by nepotism or political patronage.
