Beating The Cultural Revolution

Original Article

Hello from snowy and not-un-Siberia-like upstate New York, where I’m attending a conference at the Russian Orthodox monastery and seminary. At dinner last night with some conference-goers, I was talking about my ideas for my upcoming book. As you regular readers know, I plan to write about the warnings people living here who grew up under Soviet and Eastern European communism are now sounding about the emerging totalitarianism in our own increasingly post-liberal culture. (Snip)What the former anti-communist dissidents among us are recognizing is the totalitarianism inherent in a new Cultural Revolution, the contours of which we are only

Mr. Dreher could make a killing writing Cliffs Notes. Disintegration indeed. And no doubt a long haul. A depressing view of the present circumstances with some hope at the end. A bit like existentialism, deeply depressing until you work through it not entirely unlike Ecclesiastes. Ecclesiastes has the right answer at the end.

Growing up in the Soviet Union, my parents taught me never to believe a thing I heard in the media, and to be very careful what I say out loud. Now I find myself telling my children the same thing.”

Oooo - this hits home. I am a conservative living in the SF Bay Area and this sounds so familiar. I am adept at “blending in” so that a group of people (always liberal - it feels like everyone here is super liberal) assume I am one of them. Part of that is because they are frankly not very aware - they believe everyone around them feels they way they do. Of course everyone agrees with their views because any other view is not only incorrect, but stupid, ignorant and morally wrong. You learn to be very careful not to react or give yourself away in large groups. Why? I have seen what can happen if you are “outed” as a conservative or horrors!! - a Trump supporter. It is now dangerous - and in some areas - even physically dangerous to let your conservative politics known. There is a very small circle of friends and relatives with whom I feel safe sharing my opinions. We watch out for each other and occasionally welcome in someone new provided they are vouched for by one of the group. This is no exaggeration. As PT would say, “Sad, very sad.”

I apologize for the second post. I just shared this article with my adult daughter, also a Californian living in a liberal area. She and her family had just returned from a week at Disneyland and before they went into the park she said they had “the talk” with their kids. She and her husband warned their kids about the things they could not safely say in public. They are big Trump supporters. This is real here.

This is not socialism/communism against capitalism, it is spiritual warfare; the eternal struggle between good and evil. Satan has convinced the world he does not exist and God does not exist, therefore there is no soul - only the belly. Socialism promises to fill the belly as long as you give up your soul.

The Gospel for the First Sunday of Lent is Christ´s temptation in the desert. The first temptation is to fill the belly, the second earthly power and glory, and the third to test God´s faithfulness. These are the same temptations experienced by every human being, and Our Lord gave us the key to resisting temptation; do not dialog with the devil. (We humans are lost as soon as we begin to minimalize the effects of the tempted sin.) Jesus shuts down the first two temptations quoting Scripture, so Satan uses Scripture as the third temptation only to be overridden again by a Scripturally Greater Truth. At the core of all temptation is an alternative to True Love; it bargains with what is most precious in life.

The evil infecting our land under the guise of cultural Marxism cannot be bargained with, it must be resisted. “Dialoging” with the enemy is bargaining with the enemy, which is in essence surrender. To defeat this menace means defiant resistance. It means sacrifice if truth is to be spoken. It is relying on God’s providence for those who defend His Truth. It is a time of winnowing. If our nation is to have another Great Awakening, we must entreat the Holy Spirit to send the fire of His Love.

AMDG then MAGA.

Supreme Court Gives Trump a Quiet, Yet

As Americans began to prepare for Memorial Day weekend, the Supreme Court quietly handed President Donald Trump a significant victory in the fight to rein in the rogue D.C. bureaucracy. In a short, two-page order, the court stayed a district court order that directed Trump to reinstate two federal officials whom he had fired. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett voted for the stay. Justices Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor, and Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented. The obvious effect is that the two officials (Snip) cannot retake their positions in either agency unless they win their lawsuits.

The real nakba [catastrophe, for Palestinians] was that they started a war and lost it. Well, if you start a war, that is what can happen. The Trump administration should beware of countries where the mouth says one thing but the legs do the opposite. Believe the legs. The Iranians and Palestinians have not given up their dream of eliminating Israel and America. Iran's leaders do the same thing. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reassures Americans that "We are not seeking war, we favor negotiation and dialogue." Meanwhile, Khamenei calls for the elimination of the "Zionist regime" and endorses "Death to America."

“I often say to people, you’ve all seen these demonstrations in the streets of Iran, thousands of people chanting, “Death to America.” What do you think they mean? What is that all about anyway? Is that some local street festival? Is it something they do to amuse themselves? And the answer is no. That’s exactly what they have in mind.” That was Michael Ledeen at the David Horowitz Freedom Center’s Restoration Weekend ten years ago. Obama was clinging to power in his last years and Ledeen let him have it in characteristically direct terms. Then, as he had always been, Ledeen was direct, compelling and unequivocal in standing up to evil.

Unwinding the bureaucracy’s grip on American life will take an effort that outlasts this president and the next. But last week’s executive order is a start. The second Trump administration contains multitudes. Rhetorically — and, often, practically — it has advanced an expansive view of executive power that echoes its leader’s famous, l’état-c’est-moi-esque declaration that “I alone can fix it.” And yet, in its concurrent attempts to rein in the most egregious excesses of our presumptuous and recalcitrant federal bureaucracy, it has tasked itself with effecting reforms that run in precisely the opposite direction.

Clarice Feldman is on vacation, so I borrowed from my 'week in review' column an editor's pick of the week's top stories, modified for the article format. There are more than three big stories this week to sum up this time. Americans are beginning to get a sense of the new pope. Tariffs are having their impact. The CPI shows inflation shrinking. The U.K. continues to appall us with its wokesterly governance, which is now seeing some backtracking on immigration, as is Gavin Newsom's California. We can also add news of how bad Joe Biden's mental decline was and the press that covered it up. But these are honorable mentions.

Iran appears to be using diplomacy to stall, deceive and advance its nuclear capabilities behind closed doors, while securing financial and geopolitical concessions from the West. The disturbing part is not that Iran's mullahs are following their usual tactics. The horror is that American officials and Western leaders appear to be falling for this shell-game all over again. The problem with enriching hostile regimes to "buy quiet" is that this is the money they use to build nuclear weapons with which to attack us. An additional problem, unfortunately, is that the Iranian regime has a well-documented history of lying.

From my perch at American Thinker, rumors sometimes come my way. One of them, seemingly a solid one, is that a well-financed effort is underway to acquire several major conservative outlets, including Human Events, The Post Millennial, and The Daily Caller, to roll them up under a single owner. According to what I’ve heard, the forces behind this effort are donors sympathetic to the vision of the Republican Party that Liz Cheney, Mike Pence, Paul Ryan, and Mitt Romney espouse. As a matter of principle, I’m deeply opposed to the idea of a consortium controlling multiple once-independent websites.

Donald Trump just made it harder to go to federal prison. On Friday, President Trump issued a new executive order with a remarkably broad scope and deep implications, under the title “Fighting Overcriminalization in Federal Regulations.” It starts with plain, clear, direct language: The Code of Federal Regulations contains over 48,000 sections, stretching over 175,000 pages — far more than any citizen can possibly read, let alone fully understand. Worse, many carry potential criminal penalties for violations. The situation has become so dire that no one — likely including those charged with enforcing our criminal laws at the Department of Justice — knows how many separate criminal offenses are contained in the

Yes, there is a fight right now among MAHA activists. Yes, it has to do with the announcement on May 7 2025 that “wellness influencer” and bestselling author Casey Means was replacing Dr Janette Nesheiwat as President Trump’s nominee for the office of Surgeon General. Dr Nesheiwat, it emerged, had misrepresented her medical credentials. A post by former Vice Presidential Candidate Nicole Shanahan, without whose financial and strategic support for RFK Jr’s candidacy, neither he nor President Trump would be in power right now, has been widely circulated. Don’t be discouraged, but this is the worst, most horrifying story I have ever had to cover. The first clue appeared yesterday in FBI Director Kash Patel’s astonishing tweet: (Snip) Deeply disturbing is an understatement. For whatever reason, the media isn’t reporting the whole story. But the Trump Administration has initiated one of the largest and most urgent federal law enforcement responses in history. This week, we saw a spate of news stories blaming Democrats’ troubles on their vocabulary. They’re just using too many darn multisyllabic, academic-sounding words and turning off numbskull voters, is the basic message. Seriously? The Democrats’ problem isn’t linguistic, it’s ideological. But no one in the party wants to admit that. A Washington Post story this week – “Democratic troubles revive debate over left-wing buzzwords” – begins by saying: Maybe it’s using the word ‘oligarchs’ instead of rich people. Or referring to ‘people experiencing food insecurity’ rather than Americans going hungry. Or ‘equity’ in place of ‘equality,’ or ‘justice-involved populations’ instead of prisoners.

The Justice Department on Thursday formally notified the American Bar Association that it will no longer comply with its ratings process for judicial nominees, the result of what it argues is a biased system and one that "invariably and demonstrably" favors nominees put forth by Democratic administrations. The Department of Justice said it will no longer grant the ABA the "special treatment" and first access it has received, revoking decades of precedent where the ABA interviewed and vetted potential members of the incoming DOJ team. "Accordingly, while the ABA is free to comment on judicial nominations, there is no justification for treating the ABA differently from such other activist organizations

House Republicans likely dodged a political bullet when they opted against including tax hikes on the wealthy in this year’s reconciliation bill. Trump promised his voters across-the-board tax cuts while campaigning, but once confronted with the difficult math of paying for his expensive agenda, the president — and some members of the GOP caucus — began to wobble. So long as Senate Republicans stick with their colleagues in the lower chamber and avoid adding tax hikes to the “big, beautiful” bill, they’ll avoid paying a steep political price at the ballot box.

Sometimes, the smartest PR strategy is to tell the truth. It happens a lot that, of all the options available, telling the truth is your best choice. Clients hate that! “Why the hell am I paying you money if I’m just gonna tell the truth?! I could’ve done that on my own!” They’re disappointed if there’s no smoke, mirrors, or magic act. Alas, most of the time, a client’s PR options are finite. The “facts on the ground” almost always limit your choices. I can’t “sell” a story that isn’t credible, so reality keeps you grounded — especially in an outcome-based endeavor like PR. Trust me on this, folks:
